This important and substantial scholarly book, well illustrated with tables, line drawings and maps, is the first to gather together and review the evidence for trends in production of table wares and amphora-borne goods across the Iberian Peninsula and Balearics from the second to the seventh century AD. In it Paul Reynolds analyses trends in Iberian exports across the Roman Empire and offers a detailed synthesis of Roman trade in fine wares, coarse wares and amphora-borne goods and shipping routes, from the Black Sea and eastern Mediterranean to the western Empire, the Atlantic coast and Britain. The book draws on both published excavation reports and papers, and provides new, unpublished data from the author's past and continuing work in Beirut, Athens, Butrint, Durres, Carthage, 'Lepcis Magna' and 'Zeugma', to provide an unprecedented overview and synthesis.
Sex in the City explains how the organised prostitution rackets work in this country. It does so through the lives and activities of the main people involved. It maps the origins and development of their enterprises and charts the growth of their multi-million euro businesses. It identifies the people at the top who ran the brothels, the type of women they employed and the individuals who supported their criminal enterprises. The men and women come from all walks of life and social classes. Wealthy middle and upper class professionals such as doctors, lawyers, businessmen and priests all paid to have sex with prostitutes in the brothels, in their offices or in their own homes. And it's not just sex with women and men they seek. There is a disturbing demand in Irish society for sex with young teenagers and children. In 1997 an Eastern Health Board study found that 57 boys and girls were working as prostitutes. A 14-year-old child prostitute was found in one of the brothels. Hundreds of men paid to have sex with her. Two members of the Garda Siochana approached brothels and prostitutes while they were serving in the force looking for sex with children. Kieran O'Halloran, who had himself been raped as a teenager and Gerard Lynch, were both caught and sent to prison. The link between the vice trade, prostitution and paedophilia cannot be ignored. Prostitution is big business. It's estimated to be worth at least 7 billion a year worldwide, GBP750 million sterling a year in Britain. There are no definitive statistics for Ireland, but based on these figures and the amounts the brothel keepers alone earn it must be worth over 100 million here. Sex in the City tells the full story of the business: who ran it, how they operated, how the money was split. It is long look at a murky corner of modern Ireland.

A battle over the politics (and philosophy) of time is a major part of what is at stake in the differences between three competing currents of contemporary philosophy: analytic philosophy, post-structuralist philosophy, and phenomenological philosophy. Avowed or tacit philosophies of time define representatives of each of these groups and also guard against their potential interlocutors. However, by bringing the temporal differences between these philosophical trajectories to the fore, and showing both their methodological presuppositions and their ethico-political implications, this book begins a long overdue dialogue on their respective strengths and weaknesses. It argues that there are systemic temporal problems (chronopathologies) that afflict each, but especially the post-structuralist tradition (focusing on Gilles Deleuze and Jacques Derrida and their prophetic future politics) and the analytic tradition (focusing on John Rawls and philosophical methodology in general, particularly the tendency to oscillate between forms of atemporality and intuition-oriented “presentism”). What is required is a “middle-way” that does not treat the living-present and the pragmatic temporality associated with bodily coping as an epiphenomenon to be explained away as either a transcendental illusion (and as a reactive force that is ethically problematic), or as a subjective/psychological experience that is not ultimately real.

On Guerrilla Gardening is an activist's call to arms to all citizens - green-fingered, green-thinking or curious - to join the revolution of guerrilla gardening: transforming public space into oases of colour and life. The enemy: neglect, apathy and the disintegration of community spirit. The arsenal: daring, a packet of seeds and a passionate commitment to social change. When Richard Reynolds first embarked on guerrilla gardening, growing flowers by moonlight outside his tower block, he had no idea it was part of a growing global movement committed to cultivating the potential in the land regardless of all obstacles. Charting the battles fought across thirty different countries and the revolutionary history of this subculture, On Guerrilla Gardening is an inspirational take on gardening in the 21st century.

For decades, we have looked to management theorists, organizational psychologists and economists to tell us how we can squeeze the most out of people at work. The result? People are uninspired, feel like cogs in a machine and prefer to leave traditional work structures behind. Numbers and productivity can only get you so far. What Philosophy Can Teach You About Being a Better Leader offers a different route that will allow you to reconnect with the humanist values of work. By turning to philosophy, and what it teaches us about finding fulfilment and living a good life, this book uncovers the ways you can re-engage your workforce by valuing its members as people, rather than just tools within the process. The four authors argue that the rise of the 'omnipotent leader', who focuses on telling rather than leading, risks creating a new generation of feudal CEOs and needs to be resisted. With the help of Aristotle, Socrates, Kant and Nietzsche, as well as a whole host of other brilliant minds, they turn traditional management practices on their head, showing how moving away from traditional, hierarchical, risk focused control structures can lead to improved employee engagement, increased productivity and better outcomes for the entire business.

The text provides information on the core elements of the subject of marketing without the depth that often surrounds these to ensure that the basic concepts are easily identifiable and accessible. Students on MBA courses often do not have time to read a long text as they are studying many subjects, therefore they require a good, basic guide pitched at the appropriate level to be able to be absorbed quickly but still provide enough of a strategic element to stretch them.Written by a successful author team, Management of Marketing covers the key topics of the marketing component of an MBA course and provides a good balance of theory and application to ensure both aspects of the core concepts are covered.
What constitutes quality schooling? What are the implications for educational practice and administration? The text looks at these questions and examines international research evidence and reform initiatives with particular emphasis on North America, UK, Australasia and the Third World. It offers a synopsis of the Third World School Effects Research (SER). The authors claim that the challenges now facing educational leaders is to find a balance between SER and the other school movements and to ask more demanding questions of our educational systems.
The British read French books and watch French films, they consume French food and wine, and they also choose to drive French cars. By common consent, of all these Gallic vehicles none is more representative of the French character than the Deux Chevaux. 12 years in design and development and 41 years in manufacture, its lifespan covered well over half a century, making it one of the longest-running motoring success stories of all time. Yet at its first appearance at the Paris motor show in 1948 it was dismissed by most motoring journalists and commentators as a commercial disaster - but not by the buying public. Eventually, almost seven million of its various versions and derivatives were built. Today, 10 years after its manufacture ceased, it is still as popular as ever.
In the aftermath of the 1916 Rising, the ensuing guerrilla war reached its peak in August 1920, in the garrison town of Templemore, when a series of extraordinary events occurred. 16-year-old farm labourer Jimmy Walsh claimed that he was experiencing Marian apparitions, and that religious statues owned by him were moving and bleeding. Miraculous cures were claimed and the religious fervour that gripped Ireland led to an influx of thousands of pilgrims. The phenomenon of the ‘Templemore miracles’ or ‘bleeding statues’ lasted for several weeks and an informal ceasefire arose while the rebels, the police, military and civilian population struggled to comprehend the surreal situation. With the logistics of conducting the war disrupted by the flood of pilgrims, the IRA stepped in. They interrogated Walsh and, with the direct involvement of Michael Collins, planned to deter further pilgrimages to Templemore. In due course, Walsh had left Ireland, never to return, and the war resumed with an even greater degree of ferocity. Here, John Reynolds charts the bizarre goings-on that intersected the spiritual, social and martial fixations of early twentieth-century Ireland based around a small town and a boy with visions.
