Richard Duke of York, Father of Kings

Richard Duke of York, Father of Kings

Paul L Dawson

PEN SWORD BOOKS LTD
2025
sidottu
Richard of York, Father of Kings explores the life and legacy of Richard Plantagenet, 3rd Duke of York, shedding new light on his role in the Wars of the Roses and the events surrounding the Battle of Wakefield. While Richard III often dominates historical discussions, his father’s impact has been comparatively overlooked. The Battle of Wakefield in December 1460 marked a turning point in the Wars of the Roses. Richard of York’s death paved the way for his son Edward IV’s ascent to the throne and ultimately the Tudor dynasty through his grandchildren, Edward V and Elizabeth of York. Elizabeth’s marriage to Henry VII linked Richard of York’s legacy to the English monarchy. Historian Paul Dawson, however, presents a provocative reinterpretation of these events. Utilizing previously unseen archival documents from institutions such as the Bibliothèque nationale de France and The National Archives at Kew, Paul Dawson uncovers fresh insights into the Battle of Wakefield. These sources reveal a complex web of alliances stretching across Europe, challenging traditional narratives and recontextualizing Richard’s role in the geopolitical struggles of the era. This ground-breaking work provides a nuanced understanding of Richard of York’s influence on both English and European history, reshaping perceptions of this pivotal period in the late medieval world.

Sorge’s activities between 1930 and 1942 have tended to be lauded as those of a superlative human intelligence operator and the Soviet Union’s GRU (Soviet military intelligence unit) as the optimum of spy-masters. Although it was unusual for a great deal of inside knowledge to be obtained from the Japanese side, most attention has always been paid on the German side to the roles played by representatives of the German Army in Japan. This book, supported by extensive notes and a bibliography, by contrast, highlights the friendly relations between Sorge and Paul Wenneker, German naval attaché in Japan from 1932 to 1937 and 1940–45. Wenneker, from extensive and expanding contacts inside the Japanese Navy (and also concealed contacts with the Japanese Army) supplied Sorge with key information on the depth of rivalry between the Japanese armed services.

In the Oval Office, on the desk of President Ronald Reagan sits a round pewter paperweight with the inscription "The most important goal in my life is to have some significant impact in preserving and expanding the realm of personal freedom in the life of this country." The quote came from Richard Dudley Obenshain. Near the corner of 2nd and E. Grace Street in Downtown, Richmond, Virginia, stands a building known as the Richard D. Obenshain Center, the Headquarters of the Republican Party of Virginia. Yet those outside the circle of Virginia politics are unfamiliar with Mr. Obenshain.A Spirit of Fire tells his story. Chronicling his humble small-town roots, growing up on a farm in Blacksburg to becoming the architect of the conservative realignment and the father of the modern Republican Party in Virginia. With passion, intellect, and determination he eventually fought his way up the party ranks in an attempt to capture the Republican nomination for the United States Senate. His ambition led to the largest political event in the history of the western hemisphere. This is the story of the man who inspired a generation of household names in Virginia. "The Reagan of Virginia", a man with a spirit of fire.

What was it like to experience at close hand a dramatic battle between two aurochs bulls 15,000 years ago in the prehistoric marshes which are now the coastline of Wales? We don't know, because they're extinct. To watch a pair of woolly rhinoceroses mating less than a mile from where Lyme Regis stands today? We don't know, because they're extinct. To come across an Irish elk helplessly mired in a bog thousands of years before Ireland was separated from the mainland? We don't know, because they're extinct. To be awed by the unexpected emergence right before our eyes, from a hawthorn wood above what is now Loch Ness, of one of the last straight-tusked elephants to walk the earth? We don't know, because they're extinct.Kailu, a Palaeolithic cave artist, does know, because he's experienced all of these and more while the species still exist. This little volume contains fifteen sonnets that Kailu would have written if Kailu could write, set within the landscapes that eventually become the British Isles, with each sonnet recounting a meeting between the cave artist and an iconic animal species which humankind later exterminates.Kailu is a character in the novel Rewilding Richard, and the poems of his experiences as he crosses the icy westernmost lands of the untamed European continent appear fully-formed in the notebook of the protagonist of the novel's title. Richard, who has flown from Australia to Britain to 'rewild' himself in landscapes being ecologically restored, is flabbergasted to discover the poems in his own handwriting and can't recall writing any of them. These fifteen sonnets are a reminder of the tsunami of hundreds and thousands of extinctions occurring worldwide in our Anthropocene age, and a cry for humans of the 21st century to set aside half of Earth's surface for wildness, to give our remaining wild species a chance of survival and our threatened planet the capacity to heal itself.Sonnets don't have to be fourteen lines. Some of these sonnets take inspiration from master-sonneteers of the past and have twenty lines, or ten, and rhyme, or not. Rules in poetry are meant to be broken, just as in life, even when it appals the rule-bound most.Opposite each sonnet there is a brief note about the animal we have lost, and a quick life lesson for humans from its life or its death.

I've always felt that autobiographies were reserved for the ridiculously famous types in this world like The Rock, Bruce Springsteen or one of the immemorable ones from Blue. Writing an autobiography seemed as elusive as getting a blue tick on Twitter. If you're not famous, off you pop- come back when you've been on Love Island. I'm not famous. You've probably never heard of me. If you have, I'm not the romantic pianist or the sarcastic murderer of the same name (Google it.) I haven't really done that much of note the last thirty years. With that in mind, I decided to write an autobiography. I used to love posting nonsense on social media about burning toast or faking injury at the gym three seconds into a failed treadmill session. Two days and two likes later (one from my Grandma) these stories would be forgotten about. Everyone has pointless anecdotes that they wish they would remember outside the one dimensional airbrushed wall of their Facebook page, but it's basically become a disposable tool, with many of these stories disappearing into the abyss. If I ever have kids, I'd want them to read about the tin of beans incident in West Linton, video shop culture, the time I threw up on my sister, my numerous failed attempts at love and the time I got a bollocking from the Home Economics teacher that looked like Big Bird from Sesame Street. I'd also like others to share my pain of having to wear tracksuits, partake in country dancing at school and listen to Steps as a youngster growing up in the '90s. "Everyone should buy his book." Many Christian essays to see your life from an airplane view. Why people make mistakes is obvious from this perspective. Go higher. It is a better view of making good decisions. When you look at life from a flat two dimensions it is similar to seeing life through the wrong end of a telescope.
