Port Vale Football Club – the name gives no clue to its whereabouts, but this book will tell you all of the highs, lows and downright strange happenings at a club that has been in existence in the Potteries for over 150 years. Port Vale became the first club to defeat all of the other 91 teams in league games in the main four divisions as of 2021 and have kept up the record in every season since then. Vale fan and player Tom Pope was the leading scorer in Britain in 2012/13 with 33 goals, none of them being penalties. Cardiff City once offered a blank cheque for winger Colin Askey, and the club turned it down! Vale Park once held over 49,000 fans for an FA Cup tie v Aston Villa. From an FA Cup semi-final to expulsion from the league, and from four Wembley appearances to a ten-goal home defeat when the goalkeeper lost his glasses in the mud, it’s all here. Recounting the record wins, defeats and attendances, the highs of classic giant-killings and the lows of going into administration, The Port Vale Miscellany is a book on the Valiants like no other, packed with facts, stats, trivia, stories and legends.
Terrifying tales of vampire slayers, vengeful ghosts, rampaging werewolves, and demonic computers mean that this book has something for everyone. With action, excitement, danger, and suspense on every page, "Dark Spaces" will have you gripping the edge of your seat, scared to enter the darkness alone. Featuring illustrations and a special guest story by Robbie Gibbons, co-author with Alan Gibbons of the Read On series.

“At the end of the Trail of Tears there was a promise,” U.S. Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote in the decision issued on July 9, 2020, in the case of McGirt v. Oklahoma. And that promise, made in treaties between the United States and the Muscogee (Creek) Nation more than 150 years earlier, would finally be kept. With the Court’s ruling, the full extent of the Muscogee (Creek) Reservation was reaffirmed—meaning that 3.25 million acres of land in Oklahoma, including part of the city of Tulsa, were recognized once again as “Indian Country” as defined by federal law. A Promise Kept explores the circumstances and implications of McGirt v. Oklahoma, likely the most significant Indian law case in well over 100 years. Combining legal analysis and historical context, this book gives an in-depth, accessible account of how the case unfolded and what it might mean for Oklahomans, the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, and other tribes throughout the United States. For context, Robbie Ethridge traces the long history of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation from its inception in present-day Georgia and Alabama in the seventeenth century; through the tribe’s rise to regional prominence in the colonial era, the tumultuous years of Indian Removal, and the Civil War and allotment; and into its resurgence in Oklahoma in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Against this historical background, Robert J. Miller considers McGirt v. Oklahoma, examining important related cases, precedents that informed the Court’s decision, and future ramifications—legal, civil, regulatory, and practical—for the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, federal Indian law, the United States, the state of Oklahoma, and Indian nations in Oklahoma and elsewhere. Their work clarifies the stakes of a decision that, while long overdue, raises numerous complex issues profoundly affecting federal, state, and tribal relations and law—and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

Knights of Spain, Warriors of the Sun

Between 1539 and 1542 Hernando de Soto led a small army on a desperate journey of exploration of almost four thousand miles across the U. S. Southeast. Until the 1998 publication of Charles M. Hudson’s foundational Knights of Spain, Warriors of the Sun,/em>, De Soto’s path had been one of history’s most intriguing mysteries. With this book, anthropologist Charles Hudson offers a solution to the question, “Where did de Soto go?” Using a new route reconstruction, for the first time the story of the de Soto expedition can be laid on a map, and in many instances it can be tied to specific archaeological sites.Arguably the most important event in the history of the Southeast in the sixteenth century, De Soto’s journey cut a bloody and indelible swath across both the landscape and native cultures in a quest for gold and personal glory. The desperate Spanish army followed the sunset from Florida to Texas before abandoning its mission. De Soto’s one triumph was that he was the first European to explore the vast region that would be the American South, but he died on the banks of the Mississippi River a broken man in 1542. With a new foreword by Robbie Ethridge reflecting on the continuing influence of this now classic text, the twentieth-anniversary edition of Knights is a clearly written narrative that unfolds against the exotic backdrop of a now extinct social and geographic landscape. Hudson masterfully chronicles both De Soto’s expedition and the native societies he visited. A blending of archaeology, history, and historical geography, this is a monumental study of the sixteenth-century Southeast.
Children and Interparental Violence

The past decade has seen a burgeoning of research and conceptualization on the implications of parental violence exposure on children's development and well-being. Meanwhile, seemingly daily accounts of violent tragedies committed by our youth brings to our attention the urgency of conveying this information. With these ideas in mind, Children and Interparental Violence focuses on childrens exposure to violence between their caretakers and the subsequent effects on child development. To this end, the authors review current theories, research, and treatment strategies of the 1990s, paying specific attention to families' ethnic backgrounds, parents' sexual orientation, and forensic and legal issues, all factors affecting the nature and severity of impact. Prevention and intervention models (including great detail on risk and protective factors), techniques, and programs are discussed, as well as research evaluating their usefulness. Keeping in mind the goal of integrating practice and policy with current violence and developmental research and theory, numerous case examples take the reader from the lab and classroom into the session room and courtroom.
What happens if the fires go out? The human race is fast outgrowing the magical world with their technological marvels, and that means they feel it's time for the world to move on from the age of magic. The Agency of the Ordinary was established to find, subjugate, and destroy magical creatures. The only problem is that they have an ice demon hidden in their midst, and she's got her own agenda. Her people have an old score to settle with the fires of the earth and the elves that tend the deep magic. So when the Agency manages to capture a young fire elemental, the ice demon Bianca seizes her chance to get her revenge. And she doesn't care what the consequences might be.
