Robert Adam's Castles

The castle-style designs and picturesque landscape fantasies of Robert Adam are a much neglected aspect of his work. These paintings and sketches give a vivid sense of the beauty and allure of the landscapes and architecture, which Adam was romantically fascinated by, and which he recreated in some of his most significant commissions - or else on paper.

The 'Theory and Solution of Jetlag' is based on the earth's magnetic field and the behaviour of migrating birds. There is a copy of a letter from the Civil Aviation Authority which states they were 'extremely interested in my observations' on blood clotting in aircraft. Some eminent scientists were upset on my theory for a remedy for rheumatoid arthritis. An interesting theory is how earth originated from the sun, and its varying orbits. Other theories are how our weather has been the inspiration for many famous people and leaders of men having delusions of grandeur. There is a copy of a letter from 10 Downing Street to say that the Prime Minister, Tony Blair, had carefully noted my views on a balance between the private and public sector particularly when tendering for work. I have an idea for solving the problem of violence in aircraft. The easiest way to Australia is the most amusing concept. I express my views on our race being very much 'the survival of the fittest'.

In many ways, Robert Penn Warren was a model of the writer as social animal. As a precocious sixteen-year-old sophomore, he began attending meetings of Nashville's Fugitive group. Decades before creative writing workshops had become a fixture on university campuses, these gifted amateurs would meet on alternate Saturday nights to exchange drafts of poems they were writing. The critical attention no doubt improved their verse, while the shared sense of community solidified their commitment to the literary life. Even a selective account such as this] of Warren's most important literary associations during such a long and active life could fill a good size book.

This is a collection of writings and is not a chronological offering, but an inspirational one.Serving Littleness was written on January 28, 2007 at a time when I was examining what we have been taught, both individually and as a nation, that it was appropriate, even necessary, to help the weak and needy. Anthology of Love is a collection of poems I wrote while spending a week in silence at a Vedanta Retreat in Marin County, California in 1985. This was a time of major transition and turned out to be the precursor to a dramatic focusing of my life purpose. The Voice Within is the earliest of the included writings in this volume, being written during a specific period of time between September 28 and October 12, 1980. These were my spiritual questions, directed to what some might call my Higher Self, and the answers I was aware of at that time. While I experience less separation between my self and my Self than I did at that time, this was a profound developing spiritual understanding. The Legend of Turtle Feather is a short piece I wrote on a 7 day Vision Quest in the mountains of Northern California in September of 2001. There were 10 of us gathered for the Vision Quest and, unknown to us at the time, we exited our ceremonial circle to go our separate ways at the exact time of the bombing of the first Tower in New York on "9/11". We knew nothing, consciously, about what had happened until we left the wilderness a week later and saw our first newspaper. The Fool's Journey was a piece I wrote in 1997 as I was exploring the relationship and progression of the major arcana cards in the Tarot. I have always appreciated the symbology of the Tarot, the I Ching and other "esoteric" games, which allows us to project our current condition or experience onto something seemingly external to us in order to come to a deeper understanding or our life. These writings serve as my reminders, and as my gift to you.
