Presented in rich full color, this classic text is enhanced by more than 1,500 color pathology images and numerous algorithms that guide you through the process of determining whether a particular disease state is present. The first five chapters of Clinical Cytopathology address general principles of cytopathology, criteria of malignancy, and the techniques used to procure cytologic samples. These are followed by discussion of cytopathology of head and neck organs in Part II, including CNS, ophthalmic cytopathology, salivary glands, thyroid, and lymph nodes. Parts III to VI consider thoracic and abdominal systems, including respiratory, gastrointestinal, urinary and gynecologic organs, concluding with a chapter on breast cytopathology. Musculoskeletal, skin and pediatric cytopathology follow in Parts VII and VIII. The last six chapters address the latest specialized ancillary and automated techniques, as well as management and quality assurance, issues that are critical for optimal performance and safety within the laboratory. All chapters have been completely rewritten or updated to incorporate the latest innovations, guidelines, and references. Eight new chapters discuss areas where our knowledge has expanded significantly, such as pediatric cytopathology, molecular techniques, immunocytochemistry and HPV testing. The cytomorphologic characteristics are illustrated by an abundance of full-color figures, Differential diagnostic issues are emphasized for various disease entities, enhanced by the use of tables to contrast features where appropriate. Bulleted key points are included throughout the text to highlight salient aspects of the major entities, and the references‘ list in each chapter is edited to include latest critical ones, while maintaining the succinct nature of the text.
Nonlinear Time Series Analysis with R

Nonlinear Time Series Analysis with R

Nonlinear Time Series Analysis with R provides a practical guide to emerging empirical techniques allowing practitioners to diagnose whether highly fluctuating and random appearing data are most likely driven by random or deterministic dynamic forces. It joins the chorus of voices recommending 'getting to know your data' as an essential preliminary evidentiary step in modelling. Time series are often highly fluctuating with a random appearance. Observed volatility is commonly attributed to exogenous random shocks to stable real-world systems. However, breakthroughs in nonlinear dynamics raise another possibility: highly complex dynamics can emerge endogenously from astoundingly parsimonious deterministic nonlinear models. Nonlinear Time Series Analysis (NLTS) is a collection of empirical tools designed to aid practitioners detect whether stochastic or deterministic dynamics most likely drive observed complexity. Practitioners become 'data detectives' accumulating hard empirical evidence supporting their modelling approach. This book is targeted to professionals and graduate students in engineering and the biophysical and social sciences. Its major objectives are to help non-mathematicians — with limited knowledge of nonlinear dynamics — to become operational in NLTS; and in this way to pave the way for NLTS to be adopted in the conventional empirical toolbox and core coursework of the targeted disciplines. Consistent with modern trends in university instruction, the book makes readers active learners with hands-on computer experiments in R code directing them through NLTS methods and helping them understand the underlying logic (please see www.marco.bittelli.com). The computer code is explained in detail so that readers can adjust it for use in their own work. The book also provides readers with an explicit framework — condensed from sound empirical practices recommended in the literature — that details a step-by-step procedure for applying NLTS in real-world data diagnostics.

Random process analysis (RPA) is used as a mathematical model in physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, information theory, economics, environmental science, and many other disciplines. Over time, it has become more and more important for the provision of computer code and data sets. This book presents the key concepts, theory, and computer code written in R, helping readers with limited initial knowledge of random processes to become confident in their understanding and application of these principles in their own research. Consistent with modern trends in university education, the authors make readers active learners with hands-on computer experiments in R code directing them through RPA methods and helping them understand the underlying logic. Each subject is illustrated with real data collected in experiments performed by the authors or taken from key literature. As a result, the reader can promptly apply the analysis to their own data, making this book an invaluable resource for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as professionals, in physics, engineering, biophysical and environmental sciences, economics, and social sciences.

Edward J. Martin and Rodolfo D. Torres offer a new and critical approach to the study of the welfare state in contemporary capitalist society. The authors not only demonstrate the analytical utility of classical Marxist theory, but also draw on wider critical 'postmodern' frameworks in the study of contemporary welfare capitalism. It is in this approach that they set out to argue that a critique of welfare policy within the context of capitalism is more timely and important than ever before. The authors go on to explore the demise of welfare policy in the United States using the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA) of 1996 as a point of departure. While liberal Keynesian theory argues that welfare policy can be managed through the state, Martin and Torres, argue that ultimately this relationship is problematic due to the limits imposed on it by the logic of capitalist social relations. The role of the state in capitalist society is evaluated along with other comparative welfare policy models. The book concludes with an analytic statement of alternative futures in the era of an empire of inequality. Savage State will be invaluable reading for students of sociology, politics, and social policy.

While so many Latino/Chicano Americans struggle in pursuit of the 'American dream', while figures such as Donald Trump are accepted in mainstream politics, and scaremongering and paranoia is rife, the need for a vivid, empirically grounded study on Latino politics, culture and society has never been greater. The Latino Question fulfils this need, offering a cutting-edge analysis of the transformative nature of Latino politics in the US. In a radical alternative to dominant ideas, the authors emphasise the importance of political economy for understanding Latino politics, culture and social issues. It draws from original research and a number of critical traditions including the thought of Karl Marx and Antonio Gramsci, to understand the politics of race and ethnicity in a modern capitalist society. Including case studies of how Latino/Chicano communities across the US are not only resisting, but also reinventing and transforming ethnic politics in the age of neoliberalism, this book is required reading for all those hoping to understand the 'Latino question' in contemporary America.

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed noncutaneous neoplasm in men in the United States and is the second leading cause of cancer mortality. It poses diagnostic challenges in day-to-day practice in misdiagnosis of tumor-like lesions and secondary tumors. This book is a concise, practical guide to prostate pathology and is structured to guide pathologists, both practicing and trainees, in the diagnostic process. Numerous color images and algorithms show, in a practical manner, how to integrate pathologic and immunohistochemical features to reach a correct diagnosis in prostate tumors and tumor-like lesions. The book incorporates recent developments in biomarkers applied to immunohistochemistry, representing the best immunohistochemistry practice applied to current diagnosis of prostate cancer in biopsies and surgical specimens. It takes a multidisciplinary approach to the clinical management of prostate cancer and will also appeal to all healthcare professionals treating patients, particularly urologists, oncologists, biomedical scientists, and researchers. This book provides access to an online version on Cambridge Core, accessed via the code printed on the inside of the cover.
