This is another generalist-perspective- preview &- overview-that is, what the subject is all about, not all about the subject of another of our American foundations - Pax Romana -and- Christianity. The author traces the founding of Rome from Troy to Rome, from the Republic to the Empire and through Augustus and Pax Romana, including some famous Romans, as well as Rome and Paganism and Judaism, on the way, to a review of the Romans and the Christians, including Jesus, Paul, and the New Testaments, as well as Constantine and Justinian Emperors and on to the Fall of the West and into the Byzantium era, - the Christian Crusades and the Fall of Constantinople.

PAX ROMANA: THE RISE OF SEREN tells the story a pilot, Captain Mark Knutson, who flies patrol missions over the Mediterranean Sea for EuroSecure. He lives in a futuristic Rome, a city with a plasma energy dome and a mix of classical and ultra-modern architecture, including 200-story megabuildings. His is a world of the most advanced technology and weaponry, of holograms and cloaking devices, of drug enhancements and terrorism, of heartache and a second chance at love. After breaking off with Angela, a stunning Italian blonde who is an obsessive follower of quasi-religious fringe groups, Mark meets the lovely and talented Dominique L cuyer, a French communications-assistant for EuroSecure. Angela, meanwhile, has become a disciple of the mysterious Seren, whose supernatural powers are growing daily. A unique combination of action-adventure with hi-tech war machines and weapons, romance in Rome and Paris, a holographed fantasy realm that includes battles with fire-breathing dragons, a dystopian vision, and a world on the brink of the apocalypse. MICHAEL THOMAS first dreamed of becoming a space traveler-or at least a science fiction writer-after seeing Forbidden Planet (1956) on the 35' X 55' screen of his hometown movie theater. He held on to that dream all the way up to the writing of Pax Romana: The Rise of Seren. He has served the U.S. Navy as an interpreter in the Western Mediterranean. He is currently a professor Spanish and Great Texts at Baylor University, Waco, Texas

Hans Oerberg's Lingua Latina per se Illustrata is the world's premiere series for learning Latin via the Natural Method. Students first learn grammar and vocabulary intuitively through extended contextual reading and an innovative system of marginal notes. It is the only textbook currently available that gives students the opportunity to learn Latin without resorting to translation, but allows them to think in the language. It is also the most popular text for teachers, at both the secondary and collegiate levels, who wish to incorporate conversational skills into their classroom practice."Familia Romana" (Pars I of the Lingua Latina series) contains thirty-five chapters and describes the life of a Roman family in the 2nd century A.D., and culminate in readings from classical poets and Donatus's Ars Grammatica, the standard Latin school text for a millennium. Each chapter is divided into two or three lectiones (lessons) of a couple pages each followed by a grammar section, Grammatica Latina, and three exercises or Pensa. Hans Oerberg's impeccable Latinity, humorous stories, and the Peer Lauritzen illustrations make this work a classic. The book includes a table of inflections, a Roman calendar, and a word index, index vocabulorum. The Lingua Latina series incorporates the following features: The most comprehensive treatment of Latin grammar available in an elementary textbook.A vocabulary of almost 1,800 words, reinforced by constant and creatively phrased repetition, vastly expands the potential for later sight reading.A complete line of ancillary volumes, exercises, and readers both in print and online.

The ultimate guide to Rome, lusciously illustrated with photographs of Roman people, places, and restaurants. "I grew up in Via dei Cappellari, a dingy, narrow street of Camp di Fiori in Rome. Every morning, I woke up to the sound of the market carts rattling on the cobblestones, as they made their way to the market, laden with tightly packed vegetable and fruit wooden boxes. And regardless of how many times I've done it, I still gasp at the view as I approach from Via dei Cappellari the photogenic Campo de Fiori market square--both a tourist destination and the home to one of the oldest fruit, vegetable and flower markets in Rome." -Sara Manuelli Born and raised in Rome, Sara Manuelli reveals its gastronomic secrets: the tiny restaurants tucked away in side streets and frequented religiously by locals, the specialist shops selling gourmet ingredients and artisan produce. This is the ultimate guide to Rome, lusciously illustrated with photographs of Sara's favorite Roman people and places. Each chapter introduces an area of Rome, its restaurants, food, markets, and people. Once a Jewish ghetto, the Ghetto e Isola Tiberina, for example, is the home of specialist restaurants and ingredients that recall ancient Roman-Jewish culinary influences. Here you'll find irresistible dishes such as fried squash flowers stuffed with anchovies and mozzarella served in tiny tratorrias such as Sora Margherita--unsignposted, but always full. Six local day trips from Rome are also featured, taking in areas such as Frascati, a hilltop town to the southeast of Rome, where the local white wine is produced. Groups of Romans will drive here just for the evening, dining at one of the many restaurants and enjoying the view and the local white wine. Each area of Rome is accompanied by a selection of recipes from the local restaurants--simple dishes that make the most of ingredients like vine-ripened tomatoes, pulses, pancetta, lamb, artichokes, mozzarella, and fresh egg pasta. The final chapter discusses Rome's light and refreshing wines and gives suggestions about which ones should be served with particular dishes. Cucina Romana reveals the beating heart of this magical city. In a place where food is at the center of life and culture, there is only one way to really get a taste of Rome.

The Roman Elegies (originally published under the title Erotica Romana in Germany, later R mische Elegien) is a cycle of twenty-four poems by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. They reflect Goethe's Italian Journey from 1786 to 1788 and celebrate the sensuality and vigour of Italian and Classical culture. Written mainly after his return to Weimar, they contain poems on many sexual themes, and four of them were suppressed from publication during Goethe's lifetime due to fears of censorship; they were only published in 1914, together with a large body of the Venetian Epigrams, written during his second, shorter travel to Italy in 1790. The elegies are also a loving tribute to Goethe's companion, Christiane Vulpius, whom he met in 1788 on his return from Italy. (wikipedia.org)
