The Theatre Team

The Theatre Team

Sidney Berger

Praeger Publishers Inc
1998
sidottu
Successful theatrical productions are a team effort and require the close cooperation of the playwright, producer, director, designers, and actors. The group responsible for selecting a play and the style of its production must first reach a consensus on their reason for being and their rationale for approaching an audience. The goals and modes of production are constantly evolving, requiring theatre personnel to be constantly conversant with shifts in the functions of members of theatre teams, in forms and styles of drama, and in techniques of staging. This book stresses the need for collaboration and communication among the members of the theatre team during the moving of a script toward its audience.Though evolution in the roles of producer, playwright, and director has been neither uniform nor evenly paced, this book demonstrates that change itself provides theatre teams openings for inspiration and creation. Through examples of production successes and failures of eminent plays since mid-century, and through discussions of specific interaction or lack of it among those who produced and directed the plays, this volume stresses clearly delegated authority and responsibility of production roles. Full-scale interaction is vital as the members of the theatre team interpret, rehearse, and perform a play. This book also includes sections on the different production circumstances encountered by theatre teams of various levels and excerpts from interviews with theatre professionals.
Searching for Meaning in the Holocaust

Searching for Meaning in the Holocaust

Sidney M. Bolkosky

Praeger Publishers Inc
2002
sidottu
Scholars, survivors, and other interested parties have offered, over the years, their own interpretations of the meaning of the Holocaust and the lessons we can learn from it. However, the quest to find a rational explanation for this seemingly irrational course of events has led to both controversy and continued efforts at assigning meaning to this most horrible of events. Examining oral histories provided by survivors, written accounts and explanations, scholarly analysis, and commonly held assumptions, Bolkosky challenges the usual collection of platitudes about the lessons or the meanings we can derive from the Holocaust. Indeed, he argues against the kind of reductionism that such a quest for meaning has led to, and he analyzes the nature of the perpetrators in order to support his position on the inconclusivity of the study of the Holocaust.Dealing with the perpetrators of the Holocaust as manifestations of twentieth century civilized trends foreseen by the likes of Kafka, Ortega y Gassett, Arthur Koestler and Max Weber, Bolkosky suggests a new nature of evil and criminality along the lines developed by Hannah Arendt, Raul Hilberg, and Richard Rosenstein. Woven into the fabric of the text are insights from literary and historical writers, sociologists, and philosophers. This interdisciplinary attempt to shed new light on efforts to determine the meanings and lessons of the Holocaust provides readers with a challenging approach to considering the oral histories of survivors and the popular and professional assumptions surrounding this devastating moment in history.

In How and Why We Teach Shakespeare, 19 distinguished college teachers and directors draw from their personal experiences and share their methods and the reasons why they teach Shakespeare. The collection is divided into four sections: studying the text as a script for performance; exploring Shakespeare by performing; implementing specific techniques for getting into the plays; and working in different classrooms and settings. The contributors offer a rich variety of topics, including:working with cues in Shakespeare, such as line and mid-line endings that lead to questions of interpretationseeing Shakespeare’s stage directions and the Elizabethan playhouse itself as contributing to a play’s meaningusing the "gamified" learning model or cue-cards to get into the textthinking of the classroom as a rehearsalplaying the Friar to a student’s Juliet in a production of Romeo and Juliet teaching Shakespeare to inner-city students or in a country torn by political and social upheavals. For fellow instructors of Shakespeare, the contributors address their own philosophies of teaching, the relation between scholarship and performance, and—perhaps most of all—why in this age the study of Shakespeare is so important.Chapter 10 of this book is freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF at http://www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.

Temporary Alien Workers In The United States

Temporary Alien Workers In The United States

Sidney Weintraub; Stanley R Ross

Routledge
2019
sidottu
The most controversial and significant aspect of U.S. immigration policy concerns those persons who enter the country illegally in order to seek employment. It is known that a significant proportion of the "temporary" immigrants remain--authorities estimate that between three and six million undocumented aliens live permanently in the U.S., a figure that grows by the hundreds of thousands each year--but other aspects of the issue are less clear. There is no consensus about how the importation of foreign workers affects the U.S. labor market, nor about the desirability of some system to identify temporary workers living legally in the U.S. Neither is there agreement about the effect of curtailing the flow of workers from Mexico on that country's internal political structure. This book brings together current knowledge about temporary workers in the U.S. and examines the various issues that are likely to shape future policy. The authors place particular emphasis on recent proposals made by the Reagan administration and on other recommendations now under consideration by Congress. The book is not political in the sense of being for or against any particular program; rather, it seeks to clarify the many issues by setting forth what is known and by critically analyzing the options.
