Extraordinary Orchids

Extraordinary Orchids

Orchids fascinate. Parts of the orchid flower have shapes unlike any other flowering plant, and the sheer number of species means that their variety is seemingly endless, with an ability to interbreed and create ever more fantastical forms. Extraordinary Orchids reveals some of the bizarre life-styles and interactions that botanists have uncovered amongst different categories of orchids: the epiphytic orchids, the ground-dwelling ones, the insect-mimicking ones and those whose lifestyles are so closely bound to their interactions with insects and birds. Many orchid common names refer to the shape-shifting forms of the orchid flower - the 'man-orchids' or 'monkey orchids' are so called because of their resemblance to the primate form. Orchids lend themselves to depiction, and botanical artworks of them abound. Who could resist painting or drawing such intriguing shapes? Sandra Knapp examines each category of orchid in turn and all are illustrated with stunning artwork from artists such as Ferdinand and Franz Bauer, Arthur Harry Church, Sydney Parkinson, Henry Fletcher Hance, John Russell Reeves, and images taken from James Bateman's The Orchidaceae of Mexico and Guatemala.

The Body as Property

The Body As Property indicates that physical disfigurement functioned in biblical law to verify legal property acquisition, when changes in the status of dependents were formalized. It is based on the reality the cuneiform script, in particular, was developed in Sumer and Mesopotamia for the purpose of record keeping: to provide legal proof of ownership where the inscription of a tablet evidenced the sale, or transfer, of property. Legitimate property acquisition was as important in biblical law, where physical disfigurements marked dependents, in a similar way that the veil or the head covering identified a wife or concubine in ancient Assyrian and Judean societies. This is primarily substantiated in the accounts of prescriptive disfigurements: namely circumcision and the piercing of a slave's ear, both of which were required only when a son, or slave, was acquired permanently. It is further argued that legal entitlement was relevant also to the punitive disfigurements recorded in Exodus 21:22-24, and Deuteronomy 25:11-12, where the physical violation of women was of concern solely as an infringement of male property rights.

Mike LeighWho is the Fool and what does he mean to us? Pre-1900 scholars thought him a Renaissance fashion, a continental import of note in the British Isles only between 1486 and the 1630s, per his appearances in Shakespeare. But, as Sandra Billington shows in this superb study, the Fool has been with us far longer, and has worn many guises: village idiot and sophisticated comedian, embodiment of Satan and God's own jester.

She Had Been a Tomboy: Raising A Transgender Child, A Mother's Journey is a bold, emotional, and eye-opening memoir about a child guarding a secret identity and a mother who spends two and a half decades in search of answers for "his" anguish. With the early birth of her "son" in 1987, author Sandra Bowman and her family grow up during a time when little is known about being transgender. This, coupled with the reality that her child is a "typical" boy in both body and expression, renders it impossible for her to see her son for what he truly is-her daughter.Through poetic, raw, and honest prose, Sandra presents a complex and illuminating narrative that lays bare her years of confusion and her enduring efforts to "fix" what is troubling her child.Passing through the tumultuous pubescent years and ending in young adulthood, She Had Been a Tomboy is an account of a transgender experience like none other in print today. It is one of struggle and continuous uncertainty, fear and heartache-but in the end it is a story of recovery.

Saundra Johnson is a white-skinned black woman who was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, in l943 during the harsh period of Jim Crow. However, she and other white-skinned family members identified as black and embraced its rich heritage during a period of thriving black communities and businesses. Although having light/white skin had some privileges, the first day that Saundra arrived at Central High School in 1959, it became apparent that her color had no immunity when confronting hardcore racism. She describes in White Skin-Black Soul, her life experiences and the emotions and confusions that it illicit when mistaken for white. She also focuses on family and family stories that are lighthearted and humorous, while others are sorrowful and tragic. Saundra concludes her journey with her opinion of what has changed over seventy-five years and what has stayed the same with optimism that White Skin-Black Soul will provide insight and knowledge for the younger and future generations. Although family members may differ in some areas of politics, social issues, and religion, she still aims for a collective consciousness of the importance of fighting on the side of "justice and integrity" for all people and the power of being a "free and critical thinker," living in a democratic society.
