There is a clear and pressing need for health professionals, including social workers, to be trained in evidence-based practices (EBPs) in the area of substance use disorders (SUD). The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and other national organizations and government agencies have all put out reports calling for this vital need, though there remains a significant shortage of properly trained clinicians. The aim of this book is to provide an integrated perspective on addiction treatment on the evidence-base of psychosocial and medication-assisted treatment for substance use disorder. The volume is unique in that it critically examines the evidence base of both psychosocial and pharmacological treatment practices targeting a profession of social work audience. It is also one of few that (1) incorporates evidence both from the United States and internationally, and (2) presents a methodology that permits the authors to systematically review a large number of empirically based studies in an organized and easy-to-read manner. Additionally, the text incorporates a health disparities perspective and describes implementation barriers at the organizational, community, and policy levels. Mood disorders are a global health issue. National guidance for their detection and management have been published in the US and in Europe. The modern white power movement is now a global, transnational phenomenon. In this sweeping, authoritative account, Daniel Byman traces the key moments in the white power movement's evolution in the United States and around the world and then details its many facets today. Using a wide range of sources, Byman explodes several myths about white power terrorism and exposes dangerous gaps in current policies. For almost two decades since 9/11, white supremacist terrorism has been relegated to a secondary concern in the US and Europe despite the fact that it was clearly metastasizing. This neglect has led to shocking episodes of violence from New Zealand to Norway to South Carolina and has eroded faith in Western democratic institutions. Because white power terrorists' grievances echo mainstream debates and their violence often exacerbates polarization, their political impact can be inordinately high even if the body count is low. Screening programmes involve the systematic offer of testing for populations or groups of apparently healthy people to identify individuals who may be at future risk of a particular medical condition or disease, with the aim of offering intervention to reduce their risk. For many years, screening was practised without debate, and without evidence, but in the 1960s serious challenges were raised about many of the screening procedures then being practised. Benefits and harms of screening must be measured in high quality trials, and the benefits of screening must be weighed alongside the negative side-effects. Concerns were raised about potential and actual harm arising when people without a health problem received dangerous and unnecessary investigations and treatments as a result of routine screening tests. Spreading Change: Diffusional Change in the English System of Complementation examines the emergence and spread of three types of complements from the Middle English period to the present day. The three types of complements are subject-controlled gerund complements (1), for...to-infinitives (2), and subject-controlled participial compelements (3). (1) The cat loves being stroked, absolutely loves it! (2) We couldn't afford for it to go wrong. (3) The receptionist is busy filling a fifth box. In the first half of the book De Smet addresses the theoretical issues by summarizing a number of major approaches to the study of complementation, and by focusing on how and why a particular change spreads (a process that he calls "diffusion"). In the second half, which is descriptive and largely corpus-based, De Smet tests these mechanisms on the three complement types.
