The Cryosphere

The Cryosphere

The cryosphere encompasses the Earth's snow and ice masses. It is a critical part of our planet's climate system, one that is especially at risk from climate change and global warming. "The Cryosphere" provides an essential introduction to the subject, written by one of the world's leading experts in Earth-system science. In this primer, glaciologist Shawn Marshall introduces readers to the cryosphere and the broader role it plays in our global climate system. After giving a concise overview, he fully explains each component of the cryosphere and how it works - seasonal snow, permafrost, river and lake ice, sea ice, glaciers, ice sheets, and ice shelves. Marshall describes how snow and ice interact with our atmosphere and oceans and how they influence climate, sea level, and ocean circulation. He looks at the cryosphere's role in past ice ages, and considers the changing cryosphere's future impact on our landscape, oceans, and climate. Accessible and authoritative, this primer also features a glossary of key terms, suggestions for further reading, explanations of equations, and a discussion of open research questions in the field.

How the politicization of the pandemic endangers our lives—and our democracyCOVID-19 has killed more people than any war or public health crisis in American history, but the scale and grim human toll of the pandemic were not inevitable. Pandemic Politics examines how Donald Trump politicized COVID-19, shedding new light on how his administration tied the pandemic to the president’s political fate in an election year and chose partisanship over public health, with disastrous consequences for all of us.Health is not an inherently polarizing issue, but the Trump administration’s partisan response to COVID-19 led ordinary citizens to prioritize what was good for their “team” rather than what was good for their country. Democrats, in turn, viewed the crisis as evidence of Trump’s indifference to public well-being. At a time when solidarity and bipartisan unity were sorely needed, Americans came to see the pandemic in partisan terms, adopting behaviors and attitudes that continue to divide us today. This book draws on a wealth of new data on public opinion to show how pandemic politics has touched all aspects of our lives—from the economy to race and immigration—and puts America’s COVID-19 response in global perspective. An in-depth account of a uniquely American tragedy, Pandemic Politics reveals how the politicization of the COVID-19 pandemic has profound and troubling implications for public health and the future of democracy itself.

Rosco the rascally German shepherd has never seen snow before. Now he'll get the chance to romp around in a snow-covered world high in the mountains. But trouble seems to find Rosco wherever he goes. Will his curious nature spoil the weekend for James and Mandy, or will it save the day? This second adventure in the Rosco the Rascal series will keep readers guessing from the start. Fifth grader James and his second grade sister, Mandy, are building snowmen and sled riding down steep hills, enjoying the fresh powder created by an overnight blizzard on their wintry family vacation. Amidst the fun, they don't realize that a coyote pup, lost and frightened, has been poking around their cabin in the snow, although they've uncovered perplexing clues. It's Rosco, with his powerful canine senses, who discovers the identity of the wild creature first, but he can't communicate it to his human pals, so he sets out on his own to make things right. When the kids finally unravel the mystery, it's almost too late to rescue the poor creature, which has become caught in a hunter's trap. It's up to brother and sister to use their wits in a sticky situation, yet trust their rascal-turned-hero dog to help. But will they be able to free the pup and still make it out alive, themselves? This action-packed story works well as a winter read-aloud for educators and parents, alike, with many teachable moments that lend themselves to discussion. Black and white interior illustrations add interest for even the youngest of readers. Realistic characters and detailed descriptions put the reader squarely in the center of the book's mountain top setting, and take the reader on a lively, contemporary, heart-pounding journey. All books in the series are standalone and can be read in any order. Fans of The Magic Tree House series will love this brother and sister pair, and fans of classic, heroic dogs - from Lassie to Beethoven - will love Rosco. *Recommended for children ages 6-10*Grade level K-5th

Jameon's Closet is a story written to help children acknowledge and respect their feelings...even the hard ones. It uses humor and everyday life to gently and non-threateningly expose children to the importance of appropriately expressing feelings. The clever use of the closet as a metaphor addresses a familiar and common experience many children have when confronted with overwhelming feelings. The authors invite children to engage in a process of cleaning as they go, little by little, which lends hope to an otherwise large goal. As children, and adults alike, embrace the important message of Jameon's Closet, we can expect maturity and well-being for all. Ceth Ashen, PhD Clinical Psychologist BOOK REVIEW https: //readersfavorite.com/book-review/jameons-closet Reviewed by Jack Magnus for Readers' Favorite Jameon's Closet is an educational children's picture book written by Shauna Havlina and Leanne Richter. Jameon is not sure how he's going to clean out that closet in his bedroom. If it were an ordinary closet, he'd have no problem, but he's frightened of even opening the door to look inside. You see, he's been putting dirty socks and t-shirts, empty candy wrappers and anything else he didn't want to put or throw away inside that closet. Jameon's bedroom always looked so neat and tidy that his grandma would actually let him have extra time to play his games, but eventually she found out about the closet. All those stinky socks and t-shirts, combined with the fact that he had no clean socks left at all, made her suspicious. Now she wants that closet cleaned out. She's going to make it a bit easier for Jameon though. Grandma knows a guy named Jon, who is pretty good at figuring out how to clean closets. Jon's a counselor, and he showed Jameon how they could fix that closet just a little bit at a time -- and it worked Richter and Havlina are licensed marriage and family therapists who've worked with traumatized kids and their families for over ten years. Their story, Jameon's Closet, provides kids and their caregivers with a helpful metaphor for helping kids release long suppressed feelings and emotions in slow, supportive and contained processes. The story explains to kids how storing up their memories and feelings is similar to Jameon's awful closet. The illustrations provided are bright, funny and lively, and they work perfectly with the upbeat and positive message of the story. Jameon's Closet is most highly recommended.

Acts of Intercession: Devotional Study of Women Intercessors of the Bible, offers an interesting and unique look into the lives and purposes of women in the Bible. Some of the women have familiar stories while others are lesser-known characters whose roles played a significant part in Bible history. Regardless of their notoriety or stature, life lessons can be learned from each of them. After reading this book, it is my prayer that readers--especially today's women--should be able to see a glimpse of themselves in these women of the past. While the focus is on women intercessors, men also will be able to appreciate the fact that "...there is no new thing under the sun" (Eccl. 1:9).
