Waste materials in the solid form tend to be bulky and difficult to handle and transport. Its management could happen through physical, thermal, chemical or biological processing stages, with the exact sequence of and their operational optima being decided by the waste composition. In recent years, energy crisis and increased waste production have been undoubtedly major issues of concern. As we mentioned in the previous volume of this book, defining waste is crucial in terms of identifying the most adequate approach to recycle or recover resources from the waste. Various chemical, biochemical, and biological approaches are being investigated widely by researchers for waste valorization. Volume 2 of this book brings together the leading researchers working on solid waste management using biological and biochemical approaches.

Solid State Chemistry: An Introduction 6th Edition is a fully revised edition of one of our most successful textbooks with at least 20% new information and new images of crystal structures. Solid-state chemistry is still a rapidly advancing field, contributing to areas such as batteries for transport and energy storage, nanostructured materials and porous materials for the capture of carbon dioxide and other pollutants. This edition aims, as previously, not only to teach the basic science that underpins the subject but also to direct the reader to the most modern techniques and to expanding and new areas of research. The user-friendly style takes a largely non-mathematical approach and gives practical examples of applications of solid-state materials and concepts. The chapter on sustainability written by an expert in the field has been updated, and examples of the relevance of solid-state chemistry to sustainability are used throughout. The chapter on batteries has been extended to include fuel cells. Other new topics in this edition include X-ray-free electron laser crystallography and thermal properties of materials. A companion website offering accessible resources for students and instructors alike, featuring topics and tools such as quizzes, videos, web links and more has been provided for this edition.Excellent overview of solid state properties and syntheses.User-friendly style taking a largely non-mathematical approach and giving practical examples of applications of solid state materials and concepts. The companion website offers accessible resources featuring topics and tools such as quizzes, videos, web links and more.Significantly updated section on sustainability in solid-state chemistry.Broad range of topics to provide students with a firm grounding in the major theoretical and practical aspects of the chemistry of solids.

Solid-State Phase Transformation and Mechanical Properties of Ultrafine-Grained Steels
This book presents groundbreaking findings on how grain refinement affects phase transformations and the mechanical properties of ultrafine-grained steels. Grain refinement can significantly improve the strength and toughness of metals. Although the effect of grain refinement on material strength has been extensively studied, its impact on solid-state phase transformation in metals is not yet well understood. This book provides a systematic introduction to how grain size affects the solid-phase transformation of steels. This includes the pearlite, martensite, bainite and tempering transformations. A critical discovery is revealed that opens up a new approach to designing and producing high-strength steels at low cost: when grain size falls below 4 µm, traditional phase transition patterns change dramatically. Rather than forming lamellar structures, the pearlite transition produces granular cementite in a ferrite matrix, and the martensite transition shifts from twin to dislocation structures. This breakthrough enables the development of high-strength steels (2500–2600 MPa) with good ductility (11–7% elongation) using minimal alloying elements, offering a cost-effective approach to producing super-strong steels. This work will be an invaluable resource for academics and students of materials science, physics and mechanics, as well as engineers, technicians and researchers working in metallurgy and materials development.
