Some days feel like years, but in Ember Brycin's case just the opposite is true. She had only been in the Otherworld for a day or two when she escaped with her mom, Kennedy, and Jared to the Earth realm. But it's three years later on Earth. Em would be 22 now-if she was a human. But she's not. She is a Dae-part Demon and part Fay-with a little Dark Dweller thrown in to make her even more of a freak.Seeing Seattle rebuilt only confirms she has been gone three years. For her it was not long ago that the Seattle area was just rubble of concrete and death. All done by her hand. One thing that hasn't changed, though, is her undeniable connection to Eli Dragen, who is sexy, gorgeous, and even more frustrating. But her problems go way past him. The Seelie Queen of the Otherworld still holds Mark, Em's father, and her friends, Ryan, and Josh as hostages. Em needs to rescue them without, once again, getting caught and being used as a pawn to help the Queen regain possession of Earth. At the same time Lars, the Unseelie King, reminds Em she is bound to him and has to locate the Sword of Light to fulfill the prophesy and kill the Queen. Now that Ember knows her mother is alive, so many things begin to make sense; but so many other things are even more confusing. To make matters worse, everyone is harboring secrets. Lily continues to keep the truth from Em which puts a strain on both of them. As Eli's past is revealed, Em understands more clearly why he acts like he does and how much their lives are intertwined. But she also knows Eli is holding something back, something that could change their relationship forever. Em herself continues to wrestle with her feelings toward Torin and her own secret she's withholding from Kennedy. As the tension for war mounts between the Seelie and Unseelie (Light and Dark), the tension at the Dark Dweller's compound mounts even more as they prepare to obtain the sword no matter what the price. But is Ember the answer to the location of the sword? Is she the one to fulfill the prophecy? As usual nothing is ever what it seems.

In this new collection of narratives, Reid shares the personal journeys of several families from Los Cabos, Mexico, to show the world how amazing and fulfilling adoption can be.The stories told by Stacey, Angelica, Carolina, the Bravos, Beth, Serena, Cathy and Lupita demonstrate the many challenges families face when they decide to adopt. Margaret Junkin Preston, Poet of the Confederacy

Margaret Junkin Preston, Poet of the Confederacy

Stacey Jean Klein

University of South Carolina Press
2007
sidottu
A look at the life and prolific writings of Stonewall Jackson's sister-in-law Margaret Junkin Preston (1820-1897) who was once deemed by the ""Washington Post"" to be ""one of the really famous American authors of the day."" A prolific author of poetry and fiction, she came to popular acceptance despite masculine disapproval of female writers, especially in the South. In this comprehensive literary biography Klein maps the progress by which this Pennsylvania native became a celebrated poet of the Confederacy and eventually an established author of national prominence. Margaret's father, Presbyterian minister Rev. Dr. George Junkin, served by turn as president of Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania; Miami University in Oxford, Ohio; and Washington College in Lexington, Virginia - a career path that exposed Margaret and her sister, Eleanor, to a superior education. While in Virginia, Eleanor married Major Thomas J. Jackson - later Confederate general ""Stonewall"" Jackson - in 1853 and died tragically soon after, following childbirth. In 1857 Margaret married Major John T. L. Preston, a Latin professor at the Virginia Military Institute and widower with seven children. Though her writings had appeared in national magazines, Preston gave up her writing career in exchange for household duties of marriage. But with the onset of war, Preston again took to wielding her pen, this time through a series of Confederate nationalist verses. The death of Stonewall Jackson and the invasion of her home by Federal troops solidified for Preston the high personal cost of war and compounded her belief in the Confederate cause as just. Her most notable piece from this period is a long narrative poem, ""Beechenbrook: A Rhyme of the War"", published in 1865. After the war Preston saw in her writings an opportunity to validate the lost cause ethos of the former Confederacy and to propose expanded roles for women in reshaping Southern society. It is during this period, Klein notes, that Preston's works advanced in sophistication and captured a wide readership.
