Animals in Four Worlds

Animals in Four Worlds

Stella Snead

University of Chicago Press
1989

Animals play a special role in Indian culture. In opposition to deities, they help to frame the human community. Indian philosophy assumes the basic unity of animals and humans and in everyday life animals symbolize various ideas and sentiments. In the realm of Indian art, animals appear everywhere. In this splendid and unique collection of photographs, Stella Snead captures the extraordinary vitality, intelligence, and variety of animals in Indian sculpture found at sites from prehistory through the eighteenth century. Here are cats, peacocks, mongooses, anteaters, cows, hyenas, and tigers, as well as such fantastic creatures as double-bodied lions and elephants with fish tails. Collected from all areas of India, these photographs include images from famous Indian monuments, and museum collections, as well as images from remote sites, some of which have never before been published. Wendy Doniger's essay explores and explains the four worlds or dimensions that animals occupy in Indian thought: nature, the human world, the divine world, and the world of fantasy. George Michell places Indian sculptures of animals in their architectural and art historical context. His chronological survey identifies the location and the subject of the animals photographed and describes the artistic activity of the regions and period from which the photographs are drawn. This beautifully illustrated book will appeal to a wide audience: to those interested in Asian studies, art, architecture, and animals, and to those drawn to Snead's powerful photographs, which capture both the idiosyncratic genius of tiny details and the grand sweep of cosmic symbols.

"Deborah Graham, Alison Anderson and Stella Kavoukian have written an incredibly helpful book. Unlike other books on divorce, they start not with answers, or a flood of abstract general information, but instead with questions, and good ones, difficult and important ones that each of us needs to answer. If it is possible for a guide to divorce to be friendly, this book does it, without skimping on the details or offering platitudes instead of sound advice. The authors' separate areas of expertise track the questions we most seek answers to, and their breadth of experience and accumulated wisdom shine through. I recommend it highly."Kenneth Cloke, author of Mediating Dangerously and The Dance of Opposites"Sensitive, thoughtful, practical guide for those seeking to limit the emotional and financial costs of separation and divorce."Irwin S. Butkowsky, Ph.D., C. Psych. Psychologist"This guide is a comprehensive and practical tool for parents as they navigate the stresses of separation and divorce. It addresses common issues that parents struggle with including how to: explain divorce to children, provide appropriate emotional support, understand children's grief, select a child therapist and respond to children's reunification fantasies. It is an invaluable resource that will help parents support their child's healthy adjustment to divorce. Highly recommended "Liana Lowenstein, MSW, author of Creative Interventions for Children of Divorce and Cory Helps Kids Cope with Divorce"There are lots of books available to help people untangle the complexities of divorce - but the Guide to a Sensible Divorce is unique in that it reads like a simple question and answer guide while also providing comprehensive and critical information about the emotional, financial and legal aspects of a process that can be overwhelming. A great resource for anyone going through a separation/divorce." Vivian Alterman MBA, CPA, CBVThe decisions that need to be made in the midst of a separation and divorce can lead to many questions. This guide provides clear and practical answers to the most commonly asked questions relating to parenting, legal, and financial issues that may arise, including tips on choosing the right process for you and what professionals you may need. The authors have a combined 75+ years of experience in negotiation, mediation, and collaborative practice. Deborah (lawyer) provides a legal overview as well as negotiation tips and guidance on how to know when to settle. Stella (social worker/family professional) provides guidance on how to support your children, and what to consider when developing a parenting plan. Alison (financial professional) shows how you may be able to increase your combined family income, provides insight into the various financial decisions you may face, and offers ideas on sharing expenses for your children. These are just a few examples of the challenging issues separating couples may face, and the practical information the authors provide.

Decentralization in Latin America

Decentralization in Latin America

Stella Lowder; Arthur Morris

Praeger Publishers Inc
1992
sidottu
The concept of decentralization embraces several distinct processes, including the deconcentration of governmental and administrative functions, involving both their physical relocation and the devolution of powers, whether political or economic. This book presents a theoretical framework for observations of such phenomena in Latin America, relating them to the modern, or post-modern, tendencies of fragmentation of monolithic structures in many countries and in many fields of human activity. As such it is the first book to systematically examine the process in a particular region and to relate theoretical concepts to Latin American realities.Part I includes chapters illustrating the process in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, and Peru. The focus shifts according to the particular context, some chapters emphasize the contradictions posed by state development and political, and administrative structures, while others examine the impact of neo-liberal economic measures in relation to spontaneous decentralization of people and activities. Part II provides a detailed case study of Mexico, with analyses of both political and economic aspects as practiced by the state and the private sector of the economy. The volume concludes with a consideration of the extent to which these circumstances are common to other parts of the Third World. A significant volume for Latin American Studies collections and those involved with regional planning and economic geography and development.

Oral exercises provide opportunities to use and practice the new material. Grammar and usage explanations and exercises further prepare the student for reading the lesson's main text (kewen), an extended passage that uses the new vocabulary and grammar. Each lesson ends with a series of homework assignments.Among Xiaoyuan Hanyu's features are:- Ease in following any of the leading beginning-Chinese textbooks- Thorough preparation of the student for both spoken and written advanced Chinese in the classroom and in travel in China- Emphasis on listening and speaking in class, centered on natural dialogues that use actual spoken forms, not "textbook language"- Accompanying audio CD- Simplified characters and pinyin romanization, with equivalent traditional (complex) characters provided in vocabulary lists- Clear explanations of grammar and usage- Extensive exercises for practicing vocabulary, listening, reading, and writing- Lesson content focusing on practical topics that college students want and need to discuss- Organization of lessons in the sequence that teachers teachers of Chinese at the University of Washington.
Principles and Practice of Child Psychiatry

Principles and Practice of Child Psychiatry

Stella Chess; Mahin Hassibi

Kluwer Academic/Plenum Publishers
1978
sidottu
Stella Chess's many admirers throughout the world have long looked forward to the day when she would produce her own textbook of child psychiatry. They will not be disappointed in this thoughtful and per ceptive account of the principles and practices of the subject, written in collaboration with Dr. Hassibi. It has all the hallmarks we have come to recognize as distinctive of the Chess approach to child psychiatry-gentle yet subtle and penetrating, always appreciative of the feelings and concerns of both the children and their parents, well informed and critically aware of research findings but far from over awed by the contributions of science, and above all immensely practi cal. Anyone who wants to know how one of the world's outstanding clinicians appraises what child psychiatry has to offer could do no bet ter than to read this book. Child psychiatry differs from general psychiatry in being con cerned with a developing organism, and it is entirely appropriate that the book begins with an account of child development and of the prin cipal theories put forward to explain it. Chess and Hassibi recognize the importance of theory in organizing ideas and in suggesting expla nations, but they remain skeptical of how far existing theories do in fact account for the outstanding issues in development. They note the limitations of all theories in explaining how development takes place and why individual differences occur in the way they do.
