Poetry/Performance. Latino/Latina Studies. Art. Edited by Rosa Alcala. SPIT TEMPLE collects texts and transcriptions of Vicuna's uncategorizable improvised performances, which combine singing, movement, chants, and stories. Also included are a critical introduction by Rosa Alcala, a poetic memoir by Vicuna (translated by Alcala) addressing her life in performance, and a series of response pieces from contemporary writers including Juliana Spahr, Rodrigo Toscano, and Maria Damon."Vicuna's work, at its very essense, is 'a way of remembering' as if exile and recall joined to unravel an 'autobiography in debris;' as one personal story within a larger narative." The Temple of Ramesses II in Abydos, Volume 1 Wall Scenes (Parts 1 and 2)
Of all the enormous monuments throughout Egypt and Nubia that Ramesses II (the Great; ca. 1279-1212 BCE) left behind, his temple at Abydos, built early in his reign, stands as one of his most elegant monuments, with its simple architectural layout and dramatic and graceful painted relief scenes. Though best known for its dramatic reliefs depicting the battle of Kadesh, the temple also offers a wealth of information about religious and social life in ancient Egypt. It reflects, for example, the strenuous efforts of the early Ramessides to reestablish the Osiris cult in Egypt-and particularly at Abydos-in the aftermath of the Amarna period. Over a seven-year period, the authors of The Temple of Ramesses II in Abydos conducted a field project with the aim of producing an up-to-date and comprehensive architectural, photographic, and epigraphic record of the temple. This lavish volume, the first of two documenting their results, is presented in two parts ('Part 1: Exterior Walls and Courts' and 'Part 2: Chapels and First Pylon') is the first of two volumes documenting their results. It presents more than two hundred detailed line drawings-accurately rendered according to modern epigraphical standards-of the temple's carved relief scenes, placed alongside their corresponding full-color photographs. The result is a masterpiece of modern epigraphic research and publication. Volume 1 consists of of two books, with a total of over 400 illustrations and Preface. Volume 2, "Pillars, Miscellany, and Inscriptions", contains additional elements of the temple, as well as translations of the inscriptions found in the temple.

"Herbert loved crafting language in new and powerful ways. It was for him a way of seeing and savoring and showing the wonders of Christ. The central theme of his poetry was the redeeming love of Christ, and he labored with all his literary might to see it clearly, feel it deeply, and show it strikingly. We don't have a single sermon that he ever preached.... What we have is his poetry. And here the beauty of the subject is wedded to the beauty of his craft." John Piper, IntroductionAlthough George Herbert was a pastor of a small remote church in Elizabethan England, he came to fame because of a small collection of poems called The Temple. In this short but beautiful collection of poetry, Herbert devised 116 new poetic forms to capture his experiences of awe, sorrow, glory, turmoil, repentance, and heart-rending joy, all of it dedicated to God, not man. In this book, we have a picture of the full range of human experience and emotion, felt by a man being sanctified by God and describing it with all his poetic powers."Sir, I pray deliver this little book to my dear brother ... and tell him he shall find in it a picture of the many spiritual conflicts that have passed betwixt God and my soul, before I could subject mine to the will of Jesus my Master, in whose service I have now found perfect freedom; desire him to read it: and then, if he can think it may turn to the advantage of any dejected poor soul, let it be made public; if not, let him burn it; for I and it are less than the least of God's mercies." Building on the comprehensive photographic and epigraphic documentation of the temple presented in The Temple of Ramesses II at Abydos volumes 1 (Wall Scenes) and 2 (Pillars, Niches and Miscellanea), volume 3 (Architectural and Inscriptional Features) offers a detailed analysis of the overall architectural layout and decorative programme of the temple and its symbolism. Of all the enormous monuments throughout Egypt and Nubia that Ramesses II (the Great; ca. 1279-1212 BCE) left behind, his temple at Abydos, built early in his reign, stands as one of his most elegant, with its simple architectural layout and dramatic and graceful painted relief scenes. Though best known for its dramatic reliefs depicting the battle of Kadesh, the temple also offers a wealth of information about religious and social life in ancient Egypt. It reflects, for example, the strenuous efforts of the early Ramessides to reestablish the Osiris cult in Egypt -- and particularly at Abydos -- in the aftermath of the Amarna period. This discussion approaches the religious history of the site through its archaeology, its inscriptions-both planned and secondary (graffiti)-and its situation in the complex religious landscape of Abydos. Of particular interest are the temple's role as a staging point for the great Osiris Festival and its procession, among the most important of all ritual events in the Egyptian religious calendar during the Ramesside period; the promotion of an active, unbound form of Osiris; and the evidence for important cult activities that took place on the rooftop of the temple, the presence of which is documented today by the staircase that accessed it from Court B.

Monkey Temple is a coming-of-old-age adventure about two longtime best friends and rivals who, determined to "not go gentle into that good night," set off on a final road trip. Their efforts to face past failures and give meaning to their dwindling futures change their lives forever but not at all as they had envisioned. It's a buddy story with strong female characters and plenty of dark humor."Peter Gelfan's Monkey Temple is a rollicking journey down a winding road to a dubious paradise. I took a lot of pleasure in it. So familiar, the riffs and issues and experiences and characters-talkin' 'bout my generation-and I reveled in so many of the choices the author made in rendering them. Rich in insight and humor, it is, in the end, a story about stories themselves." - Tony Cohan, bestselling author of On Mexican Time

The historical novel The Temple Wall: Against All Odds covers three generations of a Jewish family living in the Ruhr area of Germany during the first and second crusades. It was known at the time as a pilgrimage to conquer Jerusalem from the Muslim infidels during the 12th century and to recapture Edessa from the Muslims in the 13th century.A son of both the first and third generation of a Jewish family joined each crusade despite the danger involved. Their aim was to reach the remains of the Holy Temple that once stood in Jerusalem. Pilgrims of the crusades suffered hardships and endured fierce battles on their long journey. Both participants reached their goal. The son on the first crusade died on his return trip back home, while the second crusader made it back to Germany. The man accompanying the son on the first crusade came back and married the widow of that son.Born in Germany, Alex Bloch lived many years in the U.S., where he received a BS from MIT and an MS from Columbia. His Ph.D. is in history from Tel-Aviv University. Now retired, the author settled in Israel some years ago. This is his ninth novel.
The Temple and the Lodge: The Strange and Fascinating History of the Knights Templar and the Freemasons
From the authors of the international bestseller Holy Blood, Holy Grail, a history of the Freemasons from the Knights Templar to America's founding fathers. In The Temple and the Lodge, Michael Baigent and Richard Leigh reveal the survival and evolution of a world-changing order through the birth of the Masonic lodge. Recounting the brutal events in the fourteenth century that led to the sudden disappearance of the Knights Templar--a powerful military and banking order founded in 1119 and active in the Crusades--the authors document the Templars' reappearance in the court of excommunicate Scottish king Robert the Bruce. Tracing the survival of certain Templar traditions in the birth of the Masonic lodge, they chart the history of Freemasonry from its medieval roots into the modern era, and from Europe to colonial America and the young United States. Baigent and Leigh marshal the evidence that the order's contribution to fostering tolerance, progressive values, and cohesion in English society helped preempt a French-style revolution in England. Freemasonry was an essential keystone in the formation of the United States, and the authors argue that America itself is an embodiment of the ideal "Masonic Republic." Their groundbreaking analysis challenged the accepted history of the influence of Freemasonry on America's framers and revolutionists, which most mainstream historians ignored until recently. Thirty years since its original publication, The Temple and the Lodge remains a trenchant and essential work on the influence of esoteric thought and beliefs in Western history. This edition includes a new foreword by Mitch Horowitz, the PEN Award-winning historian of alternative spirituality and author of Occult America and Awakened Mind.
