In speeches in the House of Representatives, John Randolph attacks the administration’s measures and declares that the president has lost the confidence of the cabinet. Jefferson shrugs this off, maintaining that Randolph can pull away only a few Republicans. In the approaches to New York harbor, a shot from a British warship causes the death of an American mariner. Jefferson issues a proclamation that calls for the apprehension of Henry Whitby, the captain of the warship, and bars his ship and others with it from American ports and waters. Congress passes an act to limit the navy to 925 seamen, capping the number of ships and raising Jefferson’s concerns in light of a potential war with Tunis. He plans to use gunboats and militia to protect Orleans Territory in the event of conflict with Spain. Aaron Burr calls on him and hints that he could do “much harm.” Jefferson’s mentor George Wythe dies by poisoning, leaving Jefferson his books. Jefferson plans and begins to lay out the large garden for vegetables at Monticello.

FROM 1991 TO 2000 IN ASSISI, ITALY, Elisabeth Ferrero organized and led a series of innovative conferences on "Spirituality and Sustainability," as well creative "Study Abroad for Earth" (S.A.F.E.) programs. The featured speaker and resource person for these conferences and programs was the late Thomas Berry. A scholar in world religions, prot g of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, and a great contemporary ecological thinker, Thomas Berry became the leading intellectual figure, in cooperation with scientist Brian Swimme, for an important school of thought known as the "New Cosmology." This book, edited by Elisabeth Ferrero, gathers a rich and diverse collection of tributes to the memory of Thomas Berry in Italy. The contributors to this volume were mostly important participants in the Assisi conferences on "Spirituality and Sustainability" or participants in the S.A.F.E. programs. Twenty years later, they have become important ecological voices in their fields and many now hold key leadership positions linked to sustainability. After its opening reflections, this book is divided in five additional parts: the universe & the university; innovative study abroad programs with Thomas Berry's cosmology; sacredness of the natural world; economics and sustainable development; and the Earth Charter as a new global ethic. This volume explores, from a variety of perspectives, the political theory of the man who is arguably the greatest English political thinker. It is a collection of new, critical essays on Thomas Hobbes by leading scholars in over a decade. Hobbes' writings stirred debate in his own lifetime, for two centuries thereafter, and continue to do so in ours. They emerged in a period of intense political turmoil - a time of civil war and regicide, of puritanical rule and royal restoration. They were motivated, Dietz argues, by concrete political problems and a practical concern - namely, to secure political order, absolute sovereignty and civil peace. The contributors emphasize and answer a series of expressly political questions that to date, have not been fully addressed in the Hobbes literature. His leadership style is encapsulated in the Reed Rules, which serve as the institutional foundation of the modern House of Representatives and as a metaphor for the practice of power politics for partisan ends.Thomas Brackett Reed tells the story of a roller-coaster career in the Gilded Age. Speaker Reed reached a pinnacle when Republicans enacted landmark legislation in the aftermath of a transformation of parliamentary procedure spearheaded by his dramatic refusal to recognize delaying tactics permitted under the rules in 1890. Months later, Reed led Republicans to a disastrous off-year election, which cost his party unified governmental control and left it with only 26 percent of House seats. He returned as Speaker of the House in the late 1890s, when he became alienated from other Republicans over the issue of American expansionism.Combining extensive archival research with political science findings, Robert Klotz offers a balanced portrayal of Reed's leadership in Congress. While empowering the House majority party to govern, the Reed Rules can also elevate partisan discord by allowing majorities to craft bill-specific special rules and to neglect opposing viewpoints. Ultimately, the biography illuminates the transcendent challenge of finding compromise in polarized politics.
