PerspectiveDrawn from the Hofstra University series of Presidential conferences, this volume collects a diverse set of essays that explore the life and times of Eleanor and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Treated in depth here are Roosevelt's political beginnings and his life as a politician, the tumultuous World War II years, the New Deal and its legacy, and the political emergence of Eleanor Roosevelt in an era that saw few women in public life. Among the contributors are such distinguished Roosevelt scholars as Frank Friedel, Nathan Miller, D.K. Adams, Sheldon Neuringer, and Daniel Fusfeld. By combining critical assessments with friendly commentary and treating historically vital subjects along with more personal and intimate matters, this book presents a more complete picture of a man whose impact is still felt today than is usually available.

A brief, thorough introduction to the life and times of the most influential and effective president in modern America, this volume is ideal for students researching the Great Depression or World War II. Franklin Delano Roosevelt was one of the best and most influential presidents in U.S. history. Successfully guiding the stricken nation through the Great Depression and World War II, FDR also forever changed the office of the President of the United States and the future course of American politics. The scion of a wealthy upstate New York family, and cousin to President Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt was beloved by ordinary Americans and reviled by the elite as a class traitor for his New Deal policies. Here, FDR's life from childhood to midlife struggle with crippling polio to his death in office in 1944 is detailed, offering both personal and public perspectives. Starting with his privileged prep school and Harvard upbringing, readers follow this masterful politician's development as New York senator and Assistant Secretary of the Navy during World War I. During a brief retreat from the public eye, Roosevelt is struck by polio and regroups personally and professionally. Next comes his triumphant return to national politics and his election to president in 1932. The pivotal years during which he was elected president an unprecedented four times during the Depression and World War II round out the final third of the book. An annotated bibliography and index conclude the work.

D-Day,6 June 1944 is a day that is emblazoned in history, witnessing the first day of the Allied Operation Overlord – the mass invasion of Normandy. Planned for many months and executed swiftly, these landings saw over 160,000 troops embark from specially designed craft onto a 50-mile stretch of the Normandy coast. It was the largest amphibious operation of all time and involved 73,000 American troops, over 61,000 British troops and 21,400 Canadians, with over 6,000 ships and landing craft being deployed. As the troops set foot on the five designated beaches: Gold, Juno, Sword, Utah and Omaha they were met with resistance and in some cases heavy machine-gun fire, with over 12,000 casualties being sustained. The D-Day Story is packed with stunning photographs and maps, making it the perfect introduction to this historic event.
