How do companies choose their investment bank M&A advisor? What roles do sales presentation, the bank's reputation, its relationship with the company, and the company's experience with banks during previous transactions play? Can universal banks build on their commercial banking relationships with the company when applying for an advisory mandate? How well do reputation and other vehicles help decrease perceived risk associated with the M&A advisor choice, and how reliably do they yield subsequent satisfaction? What can banks learn from these interdependencies for a successful go-to-market, both externally (marketing and sales) and internally (culture, organization, incentive systems)? The topic of how companies choose their M&A advisor has not been in the focus of any publication to date. By building on risk theory, information economy, principal agent theory, and product classifications, this publication develops a theoretical framework in which real-life marketing problems are being addressed. A European-wide survey among M&A advice users is used to quantitatively validate or reject the so-derived hypotheses, before further-reaching implications are being discussed.

The final essay is the editor's assessment of Synge's overall contribution, and the volume concludes with a general index. This work takes into account the prominence that Synge and other writers of the Irish Renaissance have attained in recent years in the worldwide academic community. The essays deal with Synge's use of language, his place in the Irish Renaissance, his reputation abroad, the forces that influenced his thought and writing, and the foreign productions of his plays. Each essay supplements the author's analysis with bibliographical citations and a synthesis of previous Synge criticism in order to allow for further research. By combining thorough coverage of the basic issues and sources of Synge criticism with fresh approaches provided by a group of distinguished scholars, Kopper has produced an important study of Synge and his milieu. It should prove valuable for college and university courses in modern literature and the Irish Renaissance, modern drama, and the theatre.

At the time of original publication, special education in Britain was permeated by an ideology of benevolent humanitarianism and this is ostensibly the moral framework within which the professionals – teachers, educational psychologists, medical officers – operate. The author widens the debate about special education by introducing sociological perspectives and considering the structural relationships that are produced both within the system and in the wider society when part of a mass education system develops separately, as ‘special’ rather than normal. She outlines the origin and development of special education, stressing the conflicts involved and the role played by vested interests, and criticizes the current rhetoric of ‘special needs’. Among the issues and dilemmas that she identifies, the problems of selection, assessment, integration and the curriculum for special schools are discussed in details, and the position of parents, pupils and teachers within the system is examined. The author gives particular attention in a separate chapter to the problems and position of ethnic minorities.

English physician William George Maton (1774–1835) was a polymath who had a special interest in botany: a shell and a parrot were among species named in his honour. His writings on natural history included a catalogue of the plant and animal life around Salisbury, Wiltshire, which was published posthumously in 1843 and is reissued as the second part of this composite work. The first part contains a sketch of Maton's life and work by fellow physician and writer John Ayrton Paris (c. 1785–1856), first presented to the Royal College of Physicians, and subsequently published in 1838. Paris discusses Maton's early life, his contributions to the growing field of botany, his other scientific and antiquarian interests, and his distinguished medical career, during which he was appointed physician-extraordinary to Queen Charlotte, wife of George III, and later physician-in-ordinary to the duchess of Kent and the young Princess (later Queen) Victoria.
