Adolphe François Loève-Veimars (1799–1854), der erste französische Übersetzer E.T.A. Hoffmanns und Heinrich Heines, ist eine Schlüsselgestalt des deutsch-französischen Kulturtransfers. Seine interkulturelle Mittlerfunktion wird in der vorliegenden Studie erstmals umfassend untersucht. Als Voraussetzungen seiner Mittlerrolle werden zunächst seine deutsch-jüdische Herkunft und seine Stellung im literarischen Leben in Paris um 1830 rekonstruiert. Einen zweiten Schwerpunkt bildet die eingehende Analyse seiner literarischen Übersetzungen, die neben sprachlich-stilistischen Merkmalen auch deren Publikationsgeschichte sowie ihren Einfluss auf die französische Rezeption Hoffmanns und Heines beleuchtet. Der dritte Teil der Studie widmet sich Loève-Veimars’ diplomatischer Karriere in Russland, Bagdad und Caracas, die anhand seiner Gesandtschaftsberichte erstmals systematisch aufgearbeitet wird und Einblicke in die außereuropäischen kulturellen Kontakte Frankreichs, vor allem zum Orient, eröffnet. Das Porträt dieser vielseitigen interkulturellen Mittlerfigur kann somit einen innovativen Beitrag zur transnationalen Kulturgeschichte der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts leisten.
