For over three decades editorial cartoonist and BC resident Adrian Raeside has trained his laser wit on a subject he knows well--the foibles of life on Canada's wet coast. From yoga devotees to redneck fishermen, political potheads to bloated bureaucrats, plus provincial pet peeves like leaky condos, ICBC premiums and smart meters, no stone is left unturned, particularly when it comes to the politically slanted stereotypes of Left Coasters.Hot topics such as the Northern Gateway pipeline, carbon taxes and the hidden perils of electric cars are pondered alongside the subtle difference between Saskatchewan's wheat harvest and BC's second-largest industry: cannabis production. Addressing often-touchy issues with his clever and amusing West Coast characters and critters, Raeside casts his spotlight on bear awareness programs and the current role of conservation officers, the increase of wildlife-human encounters (at your local watering hole) and the lack thereof (at wilderness retreats). This compilation of Raeside's most hilarious cartoons is sure to tickle the funny bone of anyone familiar with 'Super, Natural British Columbia' and the lifestyles of those who live there.

Published for MoMA's retrospective exhibition and in collaboration with the artist, this volume presents new critical essays that expand on Piper's practice in ways that have been previously under- or unaddressed. Focused texts by established and emerging scholars assess themes in Piper's work such as the Kantian framework that draws on her extensive philosophical studies; her unique contribution to first-generation conceptual art; the turning point in her work, in the early 1970s, from conceptual works to performance; the connection of her work with her yoga practice; her ongoing exposure of and challenge to xenophobia and sexism; and the relation between prevailing interpretations of her work and the viewers who engender them.
Adrian Piper: A Synthesis of Intuitions
Adrian Piper has consistently produced groundbreaking work that has profoundly shaped the form and content of conceptual art since the 1960s. Strongly inflected by her longstanding involvement with philosophy and yoga, her pioneering investigations into the political, social, psychological and spiritual potential of conceptual art have had an incalculable influence on artists working today.Published in conjunction with the most comprehensive exhibition of her work to date, this catalog presents more than 280 artworks that encompass the full range of Piper's mediums: works on paper, video, multimedia installation, performance, painting, sound and photo-texts. Essays by curators and scholars examine her extensive research into altered states of consciousness; the introduction of the Mythic Being--her subversive masculine alter-ego; her media and installation works from after 1980, which reveal and challenge stereotypes of race and gender; and the global conditions that illuminate the significance of her art. Previously unpublished texts by the artist lay out significant events in her personal history and her deeply felt ideas about the relationship between viewer and art object. This publication expands our understanding of the conceptual and post-conceptual art movements and Piper's pivotal position among her peers and for later generations.Adrian Piper (born 1948) is a first-generation conceptual artist and analytic philosopher. She received an AA in Fine Art from the School of Visual Arts in 1969, a BA in Philosophy with a minor in Medieval and Renaissance Musicology from the City College of New York in 1974 and a PhD in Philosophy from Harvard University in 1981. Piper's artwork is in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, the Centre Pompidou, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Generali Foundation and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Los Angeles, among others.

TRUE CRIME USA: Real Crime Cases From The United States 14 Shocking Short Stories Taken From Real Life "Adrian's unsparing short stories are like the tragic storm that unexpectedly strikes. Before you know it, all he left behind is destruction. What remains are strong emotions, many questions and the feeling of being thrown back on what really matters in life." "Langenscheid's cool, clear short stories don't seem to aim for emotion, but precisely because of their brutal, matter-of-fact, neutral portrayal they are so incredibly shocking." TRUE CRIME USA - REAL CRIME CASES FROM THE UNITED STATES Cold blooded murders, fatal family dramas, and a spectacular robbery. It's no secret that True Crime is not for the faint-of-heart. These true and authentic criminal cases tell the stories of people known to us - friendly neighbours, devoted parents and/or loving partners. This book is about the people behind their bourgeois fa ade, where unspeakably deep human abysses exist that nobody, not even those closest to them, would have thought was possible. In his second book "TRUE CRIME USA"", one of Germany's bestselling true crime authors, Adrian Langenscheid once again documents the real crimes from real neighbourhoods. This time, the tales originate from the United States of America. Crimes that actually happened - you will be captivated and shocked, amazed and moved to tears. Shaken to the core, you will question everything you think you know about human nature.Even investigators, judges, defense lawyers and public prosecutors are not immune to the fact that these defendants are on trial for particularly horrific acts. The heartbreaking fates of the victims and their relatives are gradually exposed. In an ideal world, the final verdict ensures the just punishment of the perpetrators - but what punishment is truly-just in the face of such cruel reality? In fourteen true crime short stories, you will get to know some of the most-spectacular American true crime cases of the last few decades. The well-known German crime podcast, "Wahre Verbrechen", features two additional, spectacular cases. Crimes such as murder, manslaughter, kidnapping, abuse, fraud, treason and robbery often involve "people like you and me" whose lives have suddenly and completely changed from one day to the next due to tragic circumstances. Was it greed, the lust for murder, a perverse sexual inclination or a blackout, that made the serial killer act so ruthlessly? Does the perpetrator hide his true motive? Does he suffer from a psychological anomaly, like bipolar disorder or the M nchhausen deputy syndrome? How is it possible for such a small motive to erase the life of a child? What distinguishes us from those who take others' lives? Which criminalistic methods and procedures of modern psychology help to identify the most terrible murderers of our time? Each chapter of True Crime USA details a real criminal case, factually, truthfully and free of any greed for sensationalism. This poignant book gets under your skin. Heinous acts like the cold-blooded murder of five siblings by their own mother or the tearful death of an unjustly-condemned, coloured-boy who was never allowed to grow up. New oil paintings and charcoal drawings fusing autobiographical reverie and histories of traumaRomanian-born, Berlin-based painter Adrian Ghenie (born 1977) merges art historical and contemporary cultural references--the art of Otto Dix and Philip Guston fused with the hybrid, monstrous aliens in the animated series Rick and Morty, for example. The Fear of Now follows this method, interrogating the intrusive influence of technology on everyday life while experimenting with technical processes that evoke both the heavily lined figures of Egon Schiele as well as the sensuality of the Baroque greats. This catalog presents this new body of oil paintings alongside their corresponding charcoal preparatory drawings. Contorted, amorphous self-portraits rendered in dusky pink, taupe, gray and blue share space with six large-scale paintings of Marilyn Monroe that reconceive Warhol's iconic silkscreen prints. An interview between the artist and curator Nicholas Cullinan also features.

Adrian Henri was a British poet and painter best remembered as the founder of poetry-rock group The Liverpool Scene and as one of three poets in the bestselling anthology The Mersey Sound, along with Brian Patten and Roger McGough. The trio of Liverpool poets came to prominence in that city's Merseybeat zeitgeist of the 1960s and 1970s. He was described by Edward Lucie-Smith as the "theoretician" of the three. His characterization of popular culture in verse helped to widen the audience for poetry among 1960s British youth. He has the distinct claim of having hosted the young Liverpool lads who became The Beatles, turning them onto avant-garde art, poetry, film, and music. Besides The Beatles, he could name among his friends George Melly and Allen Ginsberg. Unlike McGough and Patten, Henri turned his back on the trendier London scene and chose to remain in Liverpool, saying there was nowhere he loved better. This heavily illustrated biography written by Adrian's partner of fifteen years is a true celebration of Henri, Liverpool, and The Liverpool Scene.
