Andrew Bromberg at Aedas: Buildings, Nature, Cities

Aaron Betsky; Andrew Bromberg

Andrew Bromberg, of global architecture and design practice Aedas, was born and raised in the Rocky Mountains of the United States and now lives and works in Asia. He is a leading light in the design of cutting-edge skyscrapers and large-scale development projects that consider cities not just as collections of buildings but as human-made landscapes shaped by social and economic forces as gradual or as abrupt as the erosions, accretions, uplifts and explosions that shape the natural world. Now inhabiting the craggy mixture of natural and human-made structures that define Hong Kong, Bromberg has long modelled his work on his knowledge of nature and his understanding of tectonic forces, both natural and human. Drawing on a series of conversations and exploratory walks in major Asian cities – including Singapore and Ghuangzou – architecture critic Aaron Betsky reveals how Bromberg visualizes his settings and locates his designs within the complex and dynamic contexts in which they appear. Interspersed amid these urban reflections is a largely visual presentation of over twenty of Bromberg’s most exciting recent projects across Asia and the Middle East. Together these comprise a monograph/manifesto that offers a singular vision for the cities that will shape our future world.

Emancipator of the Seamen explores the life and impact of Andrew Furuseth, a Norwegian-born seaman who became a defining figure in the American labor movement through his dedication to the Sailors' Union of the Pacific (SUP). Arriving in San Francisco in 1880, Furuseth committed his life to improving the lives of sailors and ensuring their rights. The SUP, under his leadership, became a steadfast institution in labor history, embodying the challenges and triumphs of organized labor in America. This biography not only captures Furuseth’s contributions but also sheds light on the broader labor movement dynamics—rivalries within unions, the shaping of business unionism, the influence of labor in California and national politics, and the push for protective legislation. Authored by Dr. Hyman Weintraub, this work brings together firsthand knowledge of the labor movement with the analytical depth of historical scholarship. Weintraub’s background as both a historian and someone with personal connections to labor provides a nuanced perspective on Furuseth’s legacy and the SUP’s enduring influence. Published by the Institute of Industrial Relations, this biography continues the Institute’s research into American labor history, following works like Dr. Grace Heilman Stimson’s Rise of the Labor Movement in Los Angeles. Emancipator of the Seamen offers readers a detailed account of Furuseth’s life and achievements while contributing to a deeper understanding of labor’s role in shaping American society. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1959.

Andrew Marvell was born in 1621 and lived through the English Civil War, and the restoration of the monarchy. He was politically active in Parliament and international diplomacy to varying degrees during his lifetime, but is best known for his verse. Marvell's poetry has been more appreciated since his death in 1677, with increased favourable comparisons with contemporaries such as Doone. The political upheavals that Marvell lived through undoubtedly shaped his work and the subtleties of his literature are explored in this critique in reference to his conjectured and documented political activity at the time of writing. Analysis of Marvell's prose is explored to 'illuminate the development of the English language during one of its most crucial periods'. In this book, originally published in 1940, Marvell's literature is analysed in a chronological order by Bradbook and Lloyd Thomas, giving a comprehensive biography of this influential writer and his work.

This introductory study provides a comprehensive and coherent account of all Andrew Marvell's poetry for those with no specialised knowledge of seventeenth-century literature and history. After a brief account of Marvell's career as student, private tutor, civil servant, and Member of Parliament, there follow six chapters dealing with the major body of lyrical poetry according to subject matter or thematic context. Since inexperienced readers often encounter difficulties with the allusive nature of Marvell's art, it is a particular feature of this book that it provides sufficient information on the literary, cultural and political context of the work without sacrificing an appreciation of the aesthetic qualities and the ironic wit and burnout for which Marvell's verse is celebrated. In the final chapter Dr Wilcher discusses the public writing in verse and prose which occupied Marvell's later years in relation to political developments under Oliver Cromwell and Charles II.

Andrew Fletcher of Saltoun (1653–1716) was one of the most acute observers of the European political order of his time, and an important forerunner of the Scottish Enlightenment. Famous in his own day and since for his patriotic opposition to the Anglo-Scottish Union of 1707, Fletcher was an admirer of the ancients and a student of Machiavelli, who would adapt Machiavelli's strictly political concepts of a world increasingly shaped by commerce. His works address the fate of small nations dominated by larger, the advantages and disadvantages of great capital cities, and the prospects for new forms of political union which would be to the benefit of all of Europe's regions. This book is the first complete modern edition of Fletcher's works. The editor's introduction draws on research into Fletcher's life and thought, and the annotated text enables readers to appreciate the range and sharpness of Fletcher's analysis.
