Make/Unmake: Play at the Centre of Culture Change

Make/Unmake: Play at the Centre of Culture Change

Anna Beresin's 'Make/Unmake' is an engaging and deeply original exploration of children's play as a powerful cultural force. Drawing on ethnographic research and vivid travel writing, the author journeys to the Midlands region of England to observe three remarkable play-based programs: a mobile makerspace, an adventure playground, and an artist collective. She captures the voices of playworkers and the ingenuity of children improvising with loose materials-turning small objects into tools of imagination and change. At a moment when children's opportunities for material play are shrinking, this book confronts urgent questions: Who gets to play? Who is left out? The work resonates with UNICEF's recent call to address inequality, climate pressures, and technological shifts shaping children's lives today. By centring under-resourced communities, gender equity, and cultural representation, this volume reframes play as both a process of making and unmaking the world-an act of resilience, creativity, and collective transformation. This book will appeal to scholars and students in childhood studies, play studies, education, and cultural anthropology, as well as practitioners, teachers, policymakers, and all who are committed to protecting children's right to play.

This book provides a unique and detailed examination of the complex processes of transformation in former state-owned enterprises in the Czech Republic. Drawing on in-depth case studies of organizational transformation, the authors adopt a social-institutionalist approach to the study of organizational change, applying it in order to develop an explanation of organizational restructuring and management redefinition during the early transition period of 1990-1996. In particular, they highlight how these processes have been shaped by continuing historical state-socialist legacies and the powerful role played by senior managers in their efforts to fashion the new privatized organizations in their own interests.

The phenomenon of grammaticalization - the historical process whereby new grammatical material is created - has attracted a great deal of attention within linguistics. This is an attempt to provide a general account of this phenomenon in terms of a formal theory of syntax. Using Chomsky's Minimalist Program for linguistic theory, Roberts and Roussou show how this approach gives rise to a number of important conceptual and theoretical issues concerning the nature of functional categories and the form of parameters, as well as the relation of both of these to language change. Drawing on examples from a wide range of languages, they construct a general account of grammaticalization with implications for linguistic theory and language acquisition.

Stories of Human Resilience in a Changing Climate offers a captivating glimpse into the human face of climate change.Despite extreme climate-related events witnessed globally, many struggle to connect such global phenomena to their own lives in a tangible way. As a result, there is still a strong disconnect between the general awareness of climate change and the sense of urgency that inspires action. This book fills a critical void in the field by sharing 11 real-life experiences across five continents of the world, featuring ordinary people facing and adapting to the consequences of climate change in its different forms. Through gripping accounts of a nomad having to relocate from the desert to the nearest city, an indigenous person fighting back for land rights, and a winemaker finding creative solutions to increasing heatwaves, among other stories, the book humanises the challenges of climate change. By weaving scientific data with personal stories, the chapters deliver a compelling call to move beyond mere acknowledgment of the problem towards transformative action that respects the balance of ecosystems, fosters sustainable practices, and redefines our relationship with nature. Overall, the book highlights the urgent need for global awareness on what ultimately represents one of the most pressing challenges of our time, leaving readers inspired and empowered to create a more sustainable and resilient future. This accessible and impactful book will be of great interest to students and scholars of climate change and environmental sciences and communication, as well as community leaders and NGOs wanting to understand practical examples and insights of climate change phenomena. Views and opinions expressed are those of the authors only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or the European Commission.

Bedingungsloses Grundeinkommen.
