Whether a Christian Woman Should Be Educated and Other Writings from Her Intellectual Circle
Advocate and exemplar of women's education, Anna Maria van Schurman (1607-1678) was one of Reformation Europe's most renowned writers defending women's intelligence. A supporter of the female sex, she argues that the same rigorous education that shaped her should be made available to all Christian daughters of the aristocracy. This text contains Schurman's defence of women's education, her letters to other learned women, her own account of her early life as well as responses to her work from male contemporaries. It also includes rare writings by Schurman's mentor, Voetius.

With my twin sister and I having been rejected at birth, followed by years of mental and emotional neglect, with no scope for expression of the pain, I was left with this deep need to express my innermost thoughts and feelings. Which I surmise is what has led to the creation of this book. Starting from day one in 1942, through to 2023, I invite you to accompany me on my life's journey as I describe in great detail all the traumas, pivotal moments, and milestones encountered along the way. My aspiration is that after reading this book, you will have gained enough insight, to understand that mental illnesses are in fact brain disorders, and that the time has come for us to shed some light on this very important subject.

This essential guide provides accessible, concise, evidence-based guidelines on Atttention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), offering a deeper scientific understanding of the condition and its consequences. It offers ideas and insights for managing the condition in daily family life and promoting the most effective self-regulation strategies for children and adolescents, allowing parents to better understand the origins of their child’s behaviour and avoid potential negative consequences. In this straightforward text, Capodieci and Re set out the basic theories on ADHD and cover key topics including parent-child relationships, helping children understand their condition, friendships with peers, comorbidities, classroom strategies, and how families and professionals can best work together. Taking into account the most recent updates to the DSM-5 definition of ADHD, the authors emphasise the importance of a multifocal approach to the treatment of ADHD, involving the child’s teachers, parents and peers, to better develop family and peer relationships. They offer strategies for the classroom, for good sleep and for healthy eating and physical activity, and support for any other learning, language, movement and emotional problems an ADHD child might have.Understanding ADHD will be essential reading for parents of children with ADHD, as well as health, education and social care professionals involved in the field.

Cluster organizations are becoming more and more popular, both in developing and developed countries. Considering the development of cluster policy and the related dynamic growth of cluster initiatives in the world, the lack of sufficient knowledge on the development of cooperation in cluster organizations inhibits their development and, in many cases, causes their complete disintegration. The book provides new important elements to the current system of knowledge, filling in cognitive and research gaps in the scientific literature on problems related to cooperation in cluster organizations. The most valuable features for the reader concern the epistemological, methodological, and application aspects. The new element includes a theoretical concept, which refers to the trajectory of development of cooperative relationships in cluster organizations that facilitates the understanding and explanation of mechanisms responsible for cooperation in such organizations. The concept also has great practical advantages, especially for people implementing the idea of "clustering": coordinators, facilitators, and members of cluster organizations as well as politicians and public authorities are responsible for shaping and implementing the cluster policy. It will be of value to researchers, academics, and students in fields with an interest in organizational studies, management of innovation and technology, strategic management, industrial economics, and economic geography.

Increasing American fear about terrorism, environmental catastrophes, pandemics, and economic crises has fueled interest in "prepping": confronting disaster by mastering survivalist skills. This trend of self-reliance is not merely evidence of the American belief in the power of the individual; rather, this pragmatic shift away from expecting government aid during a disaster reflects a weakened belief in the bond between government and its citizens during a time of crisis. This ethnographic study explores the rise of the urban preppers' subculture in New York City, shedding light on the distinctive approach of city dwellers in preparing for disaster. With attention to the role of factors such as class, race, gender and one’s expectations of government, it shows that how one imagines Doomsday affects how one prepares for it. Drawing on participant observation, the author explores preppers’ views on the central question of whether to "bug out" or "hunker down" in the event of disaster, and examines the ways in which the prepper economy increases revenue by targeting concerns over developing skills, building networks, securing equipment and arranging a safe locale. A rich qualitative study, Bracing for the Apocalypse will appeal to scholars of sociology and anthropology with interests in urban studies, ethnography and subcultures.

The Utopian Human Right to Science and Culture

This book explores the question of whether the ideal right to science and culture exists. It proposes that the human right to science and culture is of a utopian character and argues for the necessity of the existence of such a right by developing a philosophical project situated in postmodernity, based on the assumption of ’thinking in terms of excendence’. The book brings a novel and critical approach to human rights in general and to the human right to science and culture in particular. It offers a new way of thinking about access to knowledge in the postanalogue, postmodern society. Inspired by twentieth-century critical theorists such as Levinas, Gadamer, Bauman and Habermas, the book begins by using excendence as a way of thinking about the individual, speech and text. It considers paradigms arising from postanalogue society, revealing the neglected normative content of the human right to science and culture and proposes a morality, dignity and solidarity situated in a postmodern context. Finally the book concludes by responding to questions on happiness, dignity and that which is social. Including an Annex which presents the author’s private project related to thinking in the context of the journey from ’myth to reason’, this book is of interest to researchers in the fields of philosophy and the theory of law, human rights, intellectual property and social theory.
