Since the mid-1990s, Annette and Caroline Kierulf have practiced what they themselves call “woodcut as cultural critique”. Drawing on the medium's rich history as a means of communication and protest, the Norwegian artists strive to revive woodcut as a discursive tool. With subtle humor, the sisters use the visual reductiveness of the low-tech medium to critically reflect on the social, economic, and cultural changes shaping our high-tech societies. Incorporating references to pop culture and folk art, Caroline Kierulf's work explores the often overlooked aspects of everyday life, Annette Kierulf focuses on a feminist reinterpretation of the landscape genre. The French artist Annette Messager (b. 1943) is one of the most import ant personalities of the international art scene. Her extensive installations focus on the human body and its attributes. Fragmented and joined together again with thread to form something new, she thereby creates a cosmos that is both fascinating and radi cal. In more than 40 years of artistic creativity Annette Messager has developed her own, concentrated pictorial language. In the early 1970s she still worked mainly with stuffed birds, knitting and picture collections; later these were complemented by dr awings, photographs and installations with soft toys and clothes. By assembling and arranging the most delicate of elements she produces visually stunning works on the gender clichés of contemporary society. This bibliophile’s art book reproduces the late st installations in addition to her most impressive works. Abstract and expressive – the works of the colour virtuoso Annette Werndl (b. 1956 in Deggendorf, Bavaria) are internationally appreciated and exhibited. The monograph assembles her works from the past years which were inspired mainly by sojourns in the United States and specially New York, and by the development of the music of the time (jazz, blues and pop). Annette Werndl was encouraged from an early age to pursue her talent as a painter and to work with oil paints on canvas. However, it was only after a number of years working as an interior designer that she decided to become an independent artist. She studied painting at various art academies and was a member of the master classes of Jerry Zeniuk and Herman Nitsch. Through her extensive travels and sojourns in faraway places she has developed her own pictorial language.

The quintessential aspects of the works of Annette Lucks are brought together in one publication for the very first time. In doing so, it focuses primarily on the engagement within a network of drawing, etching, painting and the written word. Here, autobiographical references of the artist, born in 1952 as a refugee child, as well as historical associations also play a role.
