Detta är den rafflande berättelsen om fältherren Hannibal från Karthago som år 218 f.Kr. marscherar med sin armé och en mängd stridselefanter från Spanien över Pyrenéerna och Alperna och väl i Italien direkt vinner två betydande segrar över romarna, bland annat slaget vid Cannae. Romarna var minst sagt skakade. Hannibal kom att behärska Syditalien under drygt 15 år, men misslyckades med att framtvinga Roms fall. Han och hans armé besegrades slutgiltigt i Nordafrika 202 f.Kr., och Hannibal flydde och begick senare självmord. Huvudstaden utplånades 146 f.Kr. efter att den romerske statsmannen Cato d.ä. länge upprepat att: "För övrigt anser jag att Karthago ska förstöras." Konflikten mellan Rom och Karthago brukar kallas för de puniska krigen och slutade med att Romarriket fick herraväldet över Medelhavsområdet. Roms krig med Karthago och Hannibal handlar inte bara om stora slag och magnifika fältherrar utan också om det dagliga livet i en lite lätt uttråkad armé som röjer runt i fiendeland.

Bok III skildrar förvirringen efter mordet på Caesar och går fram till Decimus Brutus nederlag ett och ett halvt år senare. Bok IV behandlar tiden från 43 f.Kr., då Octavianus, Antonius och Lepidus ingår ett förbund (det andra triumviratet), fram till slaget vid Philippi 42 f.Kr., då Caesars mördare Brutus och Cassius besegras. Bok V leder fram till Pompejus Magnus son Sextus Pompejus död 35 f.Kr. Under de återstående åren fram till Octavianus (kejsar Augustus) trontillträde 27 f.Kr. upplöstes det andra triumviratet, oenigheten mellan Octavianus och Antonius växte, och Octavianus besegrade till slut Antonius och dennes bundsförvant drottning Cleopatra i slaget vid Actium 31 f.Kr. Skälet till att Appianus avslutar Romerska inbördeskrig vid år 35 anses vara att han skildrade följande händelser i sitt verk om Egypten, vilket tyvärr ej bevarats till våra dagar.Översättaren Ingemar Lagerström är före detta gymnasielärare i moderna språk och en av våra främsta kännare och översättare av antikens litteratur. Hans översättningar, både från latin och forngrekiska, har kritiker förärat omdömen som mästerligt, praktfullt arbete, lysande och njutbar svenska.

Catilinas sammansvärjning 63 f. vt. blev en händelse som inte bara banade väg för Ciceros karriär utan också på ett brutalt sätt förebådade både Caesar och den romerska republikens fall. De dramatiska händelserna föranledde Sallustius själv anhängare av Julius Caesar att skriva en bok på ämnet och de fick Cicero att tillägna ett antal berömda tal till den process han själv drev gentemot Catilina. Som alltid i Rom fick makt­spelet ett blodigt slut. Catlina och den armé han samlat för att störta republiken höggs ner till sista man vid Pistoria av republikens styrkor i januari 62 f. vt. I efterspelet gjorde Catlinias samtida, personer som Pompejus och Julius Caesar, allt för att fjärma sig från ­Catilina. Men det fanns anklagelser också gentemot Caesars beröringspunkter med kuppmakaren. I boken Catilina ges efterlängtade nyöversättningar av samtliga antika källor, både från latin och grekiska, till de händelser som utspelade sig kring Lucius Sergius Catilina. Översättning, förord och noter är författade av Alexander Andrée, universitetslektor i latin vid Lunds universitet.
