बांग्ला भाषा के प्रसिद्ध लेखक बंकिमचन्द्र चट्टोपाध्याय का जन्म 27 जून, 1838 ई. को बंगाल के 24 परगना जिले के कांठल पाड़ा नामक गाँव में एक सम्पन्न परिवार में हुआ था। बंकिमचन्द्र चट्टोपाध्याय बांग्ला के शीर्षस्थ उपन्यासकार है। उनकी लेखनी से बांग्ला साहित्य तो समृद्ध हुआ ही है, हिन्दी भी उपकृत हुई है। वे ऐतिहासिक उपन्यास लिखने में सिद्धहस्त थे। वे भारत के एलेक्जेंडर ड्यूमा माने जाते हैं। इन्होंने 1865 में अपना पहला उपन्यास दुर्गेशनन्दिनी लिखा। बंकिमचन्द्र के दूसरे उपन्यास कपाल कुण्डला, मृणालिनी, विष वृक्ष, कृष्णकांत का वसीयत नामा, रजनी, चन्द्रशेखर आदि प्रकाशित हुए। राष्ट्रीय दृष्टि से आनंदमठ उनका सबसे प्रसिद्ध उपन्यास है। इसी में सर्वप्रथम 'वन्दे मातरम्' गीत प्रकाशित हुआ था। ऐतिहासिक और सामाजिक तानेबाने से बुने हुए इस उपन्यास ने देश में राष्ट्रीयता की भावना जागृत करने में बहुत योगदान दिया। लोगों ने यह समझ लिया कि विदेशी शासन से छुटकारा पाने की भावना अंग्रेजी भाषा या यूरोप का इतिहास पढ़ने से ही जागी। इसका प्रमुख कारण था अंग्रेजों द्वारा भारतीयों का अपमान और उन पर तरह-तरह के अत्याचार। बंकिमचन्द्र के दिए 'वन्दे मातरम्' मंत्र ने देश के सम्पूर्ण स्वतंत्रता संग्राम को नई चेतना से भर दिया। एक ओर विदेशी सरकार की सेवा और दूसरी ओर देश के नवजागरण के लिए उच्चकोटि के साहित्य की रचना करना यह काम बंकिमचन्द्र के लिए ही सम्भव था। आधुनिक बांग्ला साहित्य के राष्ट्रीयता के जनक इस नायक का 8 अप्रैल, 1894 ई. को देहान्त हो गया। रवीन्द्रनाथ ने एक स्थान पर कहा है- राममोहन ने बंग साहित्य को निमज्जन दशा से उन्नत किया, बंकिमचन्द्र ने उसके ऊपर प्रतिभा प्रवाहित करके स्तरबद्ध मूर्ति को अपसरित कर दी। बंकिमचन्द्र के कारण ही आज बंगभाषा मात्र प्रौढ़ ही नह

बंकिमचन्द्र चट्टोपाध्याय का जन्म सन् 1838 को एक ख़ुशहाल बंगाली परिवार में हुआ था। वे बांग्ला भाषा के प्रख्यात उपन्यासकार एवं कवि थे। बंकिमचन्द्र ने भारतीय मानवीय भावों को सहज शब्दों में दर्शाया है। धर्म, समाज, जाति एवं राजनीति मुद्दों पर विस्तृत रूप से प्रकाश डाला है, भारतीय मध्यमवर्गीय परिवार इनकी रचनाओं में अपनी छवि को देखता है। भारतीय स्वतंत्रता संग्राम व क्रांतिकारियों के लिए ये प्रेरणास्रोत थे। इस उपन्यास में मृणालिनी और हेमचन्द्र आपस में अगाध प्रेम करते हैं। हेमचन्द्र प्रेम में इस कदर डूब जाता है कि उसे अपने कार्यभार का कोई ख़्याल नहीं रहता। हेमचन्द्र को मृणालिनी पर कई बार अविश्वास पैदा होता है, परंतु मृणालिनी बार-बार उसे अपने प्रेम का विश्वास दिलाती है।

जिस विष-वृक्ष के बीज रोपने से लेकर फलोत्पत्ति व फल-भोग तक का आख्यान आप पढ़ रहे हैं, वह सभी के घर-आंगन में रोपा हुआ है। दुश्मन का प्राबल्य इसका बीज है, जो घटनाधीन होकर सारे क्षेत्र में व्याप्त होता है। कोई ऐसा मनुष्य नहीं है, जिसका चित्त राग-द्वेष, काम-क्रोध आदि से अछूता हो। ज्ञानी व्यक्ति भी घटनाधीन होकर इन सारे दुश्मनों से विचलित हो जाते हैं। लेकिन मनुष्य, मनुष्य में अन्तर यह है कि कोई अपनी उच्छलित मनोवृत्ति पूरी तरह संयत कर सकता है और संयत रहता है और ऐसा व्यक्ति महात्मा होता है, जबकि कोई व्यक्ति संयत नहीं रह पाता और ऐसा बलि ही छिप-वृक्ष का बीज रोपता है। चित्तसंयम का अभाव अंकुर है, इसी से वृक्ष बढ़ता है। यह वृक्ष अत्यन्त शक्तिशाली होता है, एक बार पुष्ट हो गया तो फिर इसका नाश नहीं। इसकी शोभा भी आँखों को बड़ी प्रिय लगती है। दूर से इसके विविध वर्ण पल्लव और प्रस्फुटित फूल देखने में बेहद मनोहारी प्रतीत होते हैं। लेकिन इसके फल विषाक्त होते हैं, जो खाता है, वही मर जाता है। - बंकिमचन्द्र चट्टोपाध्याय
