Every painting, piece of furniture and antique had symbolic or emotional meaning to her. Featuring new photography, illustrations from the little books and photographs of Beatrix and her family, this new guidebook traces the fascinating story of this extraordinary woman. Peppered with quotes from Beatrix, it reveals her lonely London childhood, how she became a successful author and illustrator, and how she fell in love with the Lakes and acquired Hill Top. Readers will discover her lovely farmhouse and cottage garden and see how her surroundings inspired many scenes in her little books, and how, in later life, she reinvented herself as a farmer, landowner, conservationist and National Trust supporter. Today, it is thanks to her that the Lake District remains one of the most spectacular corners of England.

Born into wealth in 1860's London, Beatrix Potter always had a vivid imagination. Her early interests included natural history and archaeology, and Potter delighted in sketching fossils and fungi. After briefly illustrating Christmas cards with her brother, Bertram, Potter wrote and illustrated her well-known book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit. The book was rejected by several publishes until Frederick Warne eventually took a risk and published the story in 1902 - a risk that paid off. Peter Rabbit was a huge success and readers loved hearing about Peter's mischevious adventures in the lush English countryside. As she got older, Beatrix Potter became a proud conservationist, working hard to defend the landscape she loved so well against industrialization and logging. Now over one hundred years old, Peter Rabbit and his animal friends have become cultural touchstones and continue to delight readers of all ages.

From Peter Rabbit to Mrs Tiggy-winkle, The Tailor of Gloucester to The Fairy Caravan, the works and characters of Beatrix Potter have bewitched children the world over for more than a century – and have never been out of print. This lively and curious book explores Potter’s works via a series of short, interlinked essays that take their starting point from 26 key words and phrases from her children’s books, her letters, journals and other writings. For students and enthusiasts alike, this engaging collection of essays offers fresh angles on familiar Potter themes and topics (A is for Animal; C is for Clothes) whilst others cast light on uncharted corners of her imagination (D is for Dancing; U is for Uncanny; G is for Ginnett’s Circus). Entries like F is for Fairy, T is for Trees, S is for Seasons and R is for Rabbit Tobacco look at topics related to race, gender and the environment as other essays use key words to open up discussion of Potter’s legacies and impact (L is for Lake District; P is for Peter Rabbit; H is for The Horn Book), including global reception, TV and film adaptations, and the development of Potter's beloved Lake District as a thriving tourist destination. Paying close attention to the texts while also considering the broader contexts at play, this book broaches questions that offer intriguing ways into the works readers feel they know so well: how does a youthful encounter with a circus come to shape Potter’s imagination? Why does eating and food feature so extensively in her writing and how does this relate to contemporary debates on diet and environmental crisis? Providing a close-up encounter with one of the most celebrated children’s authors, this book invites new recognition of the ways in which Beatrix Potter’s writing explores ideas which remain deeply relevant today, including the relationship between humans and the natural environments they inhabit.

This appealing picture book fills that gap.... Recommended for young Beatrix Potter fans."-Booklist "In forthright language, this picture book biography recounts her boundary-breaking life as she grows from a nature-loving child with a menagerie of pets...into a successful artist and canny entrepreneur. An attractive introduction to an iconic creator."-Publisher's Weekly "An exceptionally accurate portrait of Beatrix Potter told with humor and surprise. Beautifully done." Linda Lear, author of Beatrix Potter: A Life in Nature Through she's universally known as the creator of The Tale of Peter Rabbit, Beatrix Potter did so much more. This is the true story about how she helped save the English countryside Growing up in London, Beatrix Potter felt the restraints of Victorian times. Girls didn't go to school and weren't expected to work. But she longed to do something important, something that truly mattered. As Beatrix spent her summers in the country and found inspiration in nature, it was through this passion that her creativity flourished. There, she crafted The Tale of Peter Rabbit. She would eventually move to the countryside full-time, but developers sought to change the land. To save it, Beatrix used the money from the success of her books and bought acres and acres of land and farms to prevent the development of the countryside that both she and Peter Rabbit so cherished. Because of her efforts, it's been preserved just as she left it. This beautiful picture book shines a light on Beatrix Potter's lesser-known history and her desire to do something for the greater good.

The Real Beatrix Potter is a fascinating and revealing biography of one of the world's most cherished children's authors. Beatrix Potter's famous little white books have enchanted generations of young readers who adored the characters she created and of course her own distinctive illustrations. Born into a typically repressed Victorian family it was assumed that Beatrix would achieve little more than finding herself a rich husband, and so there was no point in bothering to educate her. But the Potters underestimated their daughter. Stifled by the lack of stimulation, she educated herself in art, science, and of course a great love of the natural world. The success of Peter Rabbit proved her to be creative genius who could have become the toast of the London literary scene, but when her fianc tragically died Beatrix retreated to the Lake District where she reinvented herself as a successful farmer, a canny businesswoman and an early environmental pioneer. Passionately campaigning to save the area from development she helped establish the National Trust, and despite her great wealth Beatrix lived out her days in humble anonymity.

This book looks at the life of an artist - Ernest Aris In 1916 Beatrix Potter's eyesight was failing and she engaged Aris to undertake 6 drawings for a book that she had in mind. In a bitter twist of fate, an American publisher pirated some other drawings by Aris to illustrate a plagiarised tale of Peter Rabbit. A potential partnership came to an end with Potter confiding in her publishers that Aris was an "artlessly conceited little bounder". Aris was forced to adopt pseudonyms. You will find little recorded about Aris in the Biographies and Compendium's on British Children's authors and illustrators yet he illustrated some 200 children's books. History seems to have passed him by. I have undertaken comprehensive research into the Biography of one of our notable illustrators and hope that you enjoy the journey. Joyce Irene Whalley, formerly of the Rare Books Section of the V&A Museum wrote "When I co-founded the Beatrix Potter Society over 20 years ago, I would not have believed we would still be finding out new information about her work today. You have opened up another window, and I do congratulate you". The author, Judy Taylor Hough MBE, wrote ".......let me congratulate you on an excellent piece of research - an important addition to the Potter saga. I am fascinated to discover that our Mr Aris is a much more interesting man than I had ever imagined." In response to a request from Linda Lear who published "Beatrix Potter, A Life in Nature," in 2007 I gave permission for her to quote from my research which now appears here, in full, for the first time. Broadcaster and Author PAUL CHRYSTAL said: - The story of Ernest Aris and the illustrations he did for Beatrix Potter, for many other books and for Cadbury's Cococubs, has never been fully researched or published. That is, until this unique and fascinating book became available. Lavishly illustrated with Aris' numerous drawings and other documents - some of which are unique to this book - it provides the first account of Aris' career and fills an important gap in the literature on marketing history and the history of children's book illustration. His work and relationship with Beatrix Potter is fully documented and provides important details of a hitherto little known aspect of Potter's life. The Cadbury Cococubs campaign is one of the most successful in British Marketing history and this meticulously researched coverage fills an important gap in the literature.
