Ten Speed Press

Every September during harvest season, the Cakebread family invites five up-and-coming chefs and a host of local farmers to their winery for a weekend of tasting, talking, cooking, and sharing. A whirlwind short course in winemaking, viticulture, and artisan food production, the American Harvest Workshop heats up as the sun goes down. Each evening, the chefs come together to plan and execute two multicourse dinners using a market basket of ingredients from the Cakebreads' favorite purveyors. In "The Cakebread Cellars American Harvest Cookbook," Jack, Dolores, and culinary director Brian Streeter present 100 recipes and wine pairings developed by workshop chefs and the winery in honor of the twenty-fifth anniversary of this groundbreaking annual event. These spectacular dishes--from appetizers to entrees and desserts--are adapted for home cooking in this delicious exploration of Napa Valley's food and wine culture. Many of the world's leading chefs have attended the workshop and their recipes are here, including Gary Danko's Mediterranean Summer Vegetable Gratin, Nancy Oakes's Warm Chopped Liver Crostini with White Truffle Oil, Hubert Keller's Provencal Garlic and Saffron Soup, and Alan Wong's Pan-Seared Sturgeon with Thai Red Curry. For dessert, just try to choose between Charlie Trotter's Chocolate-Praline Bread Pudding with Cinnamon Cream and Marcel Desaulnier's Caramel-Banana-Chocolate Chip Ice Cream. Guidelines for wine and food pairing are presented along with profiles of the winery's finest purveyors, from Cowgirl Creamery and Hog Island Oyster Company to Liberty Ducks, Broken Arrow Ranch, and Fatted Calf. This unique collection celebrates a quarter century of workshops--and the chefs, winemakers, and farmers who come together each year to cook, eat, and drink from the bounty of Napa's vibrant wine country.

How to Recruit and Retain Higher Education Students

How to Recruit and Retain Higher Education Students

How to Recruit and Retain Higher Education Students is an invaluable resource for academic staff, administrators and policy makers involved in student recruitment and improving student retention. It offers practical advice on how universities can influence the expectations of prospective students, allowing them to make sensible decisions about careers, courses and institutions. Many surveys of students who drop out of university show that most do so out of disappointment. Failing to understand what higher education was about quickly enough, they become confused and frustrated. Dropping out seems the best solution. This book describes a series of practices proven to encourage students to stay on, discussing the background research on student attrition. By preparing students better for their higher education experience, the practices in this book are effective not only in recruiting students but also in matching them to the right institutions and programmes. The practices described range from those reaching out in a broad way to communities of potential students, to university support for pre-entry examinations, to enhanced communication between institutions and applicants. All are described in sufficient detail to allow judgments to be made about how to use and adapt them to suit local needs. How to Recruit and Retain Higher Education Students provides a sound theoretical foundation for research into student retention and provides the necessary underpinning for those academic staff embarking on courses and assists in preparing them for their roles in both teaching and student support.

The Fourth Branch

The Fourth Branch

Brian J. Cook

University Press of Kansas
2021
sidottu
In The Fourth Branch: Reconstructing the Administrative State for the Commercial Republic Brian J. Cook confronts head-on the accumulating derangements in the American constitutional system and how the administrative state has contributed to the problems, how it has been a key force in addressing the troubles, and how it can be reformed to serve the system better. The Fourth Branch is anchored in a powerful theory of regime design that guides a freshly comprehensive account of the historical development of successive political economies and administrative states in the United States and provides the normative grounding for more far-reaching constitutional change. Cook calls for a decisive, pattern-breaking response in the form of a constitutional redesign to accommodate a fourth branch, an administrative branch. The Fourth Branch shows that the creation of a fourth administrative branch is consistent with the history and traditions of American constitutionalism. Far more than that, however, the addition of a fourth branch could enhance American constitutionalism by making the separation of powers work better, increasing the likelihood that deliberative lawmaking will occur, strengthening civic capacity and public engagement in governance, and improving both accountability and coordination in the administrative state.By stressing that the administrative state in its current form is both biased toward business and seriously undermined by subordination to the three constitutional branches, Cook contends that neither abandoning the administrative state nor more deeply constitutionalizing or democratizing it within the existing constitutional structure is sufficient to fully legitimate and capitalize on administrative power to serve the public interest. Rather, Cook argues that it is imperative to confront the reality that a fundamental reordering of constitutional arrangements is necessary if the American commercial republic is to recover from its growing disorder and progress further toward its aspirations of liberal justice and limited but vigorous self-rule.
Democracy and Administration

Democracy and Administration

Brian J. Cook

Johns Hopkins University Press
2007
sidottu
Though his term in the White House ended nearly a century ago, Woodrow Wilson anticipated the need for new ideas to address the effects of modern economic and social forces on the United States, including increased involvement in international affairs. Democracy and Administration synthesizes the former world leader's thought on government administration, laying out Wilson's concepts of how best to manage government bureaucracies and balance policy leadership with popular rule. Linking the full gamut of Wilson's ideas and actions covering nearly four decades, Brian J. Cook finds success, folly, and fresh thinking with relevance in the twenty-first century. Building on his interpretive synthesis, Cook links Wilson's tenets to current efforts to improve public management, showing how some of his most prominent ideas and initiatives presaged major developments in theory and practice. Democracy and Administration calls on scholars and practitioners to take Wilson's institutional design and regime-level orientation into account as part of the ambitious enterprise to develop a new science of democratic governance.
Bureaucracy and Self-Government

Bureaucracy and Self-Government

Brian J. Cook

Johns Hopkins University Press
2015
pokkari
In this new edition of his provocative book Bureaucracy and Self-Government, Brian J. Cook reconsiders his thesis regarding the inescapable tension between the ideal of self-government and the reality of administratively centered governance. Revisiting his historical exploration of competing conceptions of politics, government, and public administration, Cook offers a novel way of thinking constitutionally about public administration that transcends debates about "big government." Cook enriches his historical analysis with new scholarship and extends that analysis to the present, taking account of significant developments since the mid-1990s. Each chapter has been updated, and two new chapters sharpen Cook's argument for recognizing a constitutive dimension in normative theorizing about public administration. The second edition also includes reviews of Jeffersonian impacts on administrative theory and practice and Jacksonian developments in national administrative structures and functions, a look at the administrative theorizing that presaged progressive reforms in civil service, and insight into the confounding complexities that characterize public thinking about administration in a postmodern political order.
