In 2014, our church worked through the New City Catechism. Each work I wrote a devotion based on the Scripture text for the week to help meditate and clarify the truth expounded in the text. The goal was for each family to read the devotion together during the week and to practice memorizing the catechism question. I would love to share our experience as a church body with those of you holding this book. There is a short devotion followed by memory work for each week including a Bible verse, Bible knowledge and a catechism question. I decided to use the New City Catechism because it is broken down to 52 weeks which makes it perfect for a family devotion. It also has online resources at www.newcitycatechism.com as well as an Ipad app to help provide additional background information. (The "A" under the stands for the adult version while the "C" stands for the child's version. Use whichever you think is best for your family.) My prayer is that using this systematic devotional your family will grow in their understanding the basics of the Christian faith and the regular discipline of family devotions and memorization will bear spiritual fruit for years to come. With Christ's Affection, Pastor Dave Kiehn

After a twenty-five-year career spent fighting for women’s rights around the globe at the expense of time with her family, Karen Sherman looked around and realized she didn’t really know her children and felt little connection to her husband. With her world—work, marriage, family—crashing down, she made the rash decision to move to Rwanda with her three sons. While her boys attended the international school, she worked to better the lives of women survivors of war. But as the survivors—Josephine, Ange, Grace, Euphraise, Debora, Yvette, and Teresa—shared their stories of grit and determination, building lives and raising families despite the brutal challenges of war, genocide, and inequality, Karen began to see how her work was connected to the abuse in her own past, and how it was preventing her from becoming the woman she wanted to be. The struggles of these survivors, she realized, were the struggles of women everywhere, regardless of place or circumstance: striving to balance work and family, fighting for real options and choices, trying to make their voices heard. The strength of these women helped Karen find her own way through conflict zones and battles with corrupt politicians. In the end, the journey brings her home to her family and to a renewed commitment to fighting for women around the world to live free from violence and abuse, in peace and with dignity.

Franchising is the fastest-growing method of conducting business in the world. Why? Because it works But don't be fooled - success isn't guaranteed. Over the course of a few decades in development, I've seen millions of dollars wasted on fixing problems that, in many instances, could have been avoided altogether. Like most business owners, your primary goal is to operate a successful business. You can't actually do that until your location opens. While you may know a little bit about a lot of things, the devil is in the details. When you don't know what you don't know, especially when it comes to leasing space and building new locations, you could be in for a long, rough ride. The reality of how much you don't know (and what can happen next ) can be all-consuming. Enthusiasm, persistence, and dogged determination won't be enough to save you. Do not, Do Not, DO NOT sign a lease without reading this book Once a lease is executed, you are 'officially' a business owner - even if your new location never actually opens A lot of professionals with years of business experience assure themselves that there isn't any part of the building process that they either don't know or can't figure out. What they don't take into account is the additional time that ticks away while they learn the ropes - and make costly mistakes in the process. No matter how much business experience and success you have had in past roles, if you are not well versed in all that is involved in getting your new location open, failure will find you Building new locations hasn't changed much over the years. Because it happens thousands of times a day across the country, it's easy to adopt the mindset of, "I can figure this out." The truth is that you CAN figure it out - but how much will you spend or forego in the process? Ignorance isn't bliss - it's EXPENSIVE Failure is not an option - until it happens Then what? The purpose of this book is to take the guesswork out of the entire development process so you know exactly what it takes to get your new location open in the least amount of time, for the best overall price and, more important than anything else, without making costly mistakes in the process. Whether you are an independent business owner or a franchisee, if you have plans to lease space to build your first (or your next) location, the book you're holding in your hands will become one of the most valuable investments you can make To your success...

Brick Walls and Other Barriers

Brick Walls and Other Barriers

Thomas E. Truitt

University of South Carolina Press

In 1987, when veteran school administrator Thomas E. Truitt took the post of district superintendent in Florence, South Carolina, he assumed leadership of a public school system in denial of its racial disharmony. More than three decades after Brown v. Board of Education, Florence District One had never accomplished an integration plan that met federal approval; rather the district had skirted the intent of the federal mandate by employing ""freedom of choice"" and traditional attendance zones. In the 1990s, a single issue - the need to replace an aging, predominantly black elementary school - brought to the fore the local population's anguished attitudes about race and education. ""Brick Walls and Other Barriers"" recounts in wrenching detail how legacies of discrimination and injustice combined to divide a community along racial lines. Truitt takes readers into the complex inner workings of a modern school system, detailing the relationships between school boards and professional administrators to which few parents or citizens are privy. He describes a two-year struggle that included heated public meetings, an NAACP lawsuit, a federal court hearing, and a court-mandated change in the election of school board members. Shedding light on the intractability of racial problems in South Carolina, Truitt stresses that the story of what happened in Florence cannot be understood in isolation but must be viewed as a tale that exposes much about the current state of public education in the South and across the United States.

James Smethurst

Amiri Baraka is unquestionably the most recognized leader of the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and 1970s, and one of the key literary and cultural figures of the postwar United States. While Baraka's political and aesthetic stances changed considerably over the course of his career, Brick City Vanguard demonstrates the continuity in his thinking about the meaning of black music in the material, psychic, and ideological development of black people. Drawing on primary texts, paratexts (including album liner notes), audio and visual recordings, and archival sources, James Smethurst takes a new look at how Baraka's writing on and performance of music envisioned the creation of an African American people or nation, as well as the growth and consolidation of a black working class within that nation, that resonates to this day. This vision also provides a way of understanding the encounter of black people with what has been called ""the urban crisis"" and a projection of a liberated black future beyond that crisis.
