Charity and Power in Early Modern Italy

Charity and Power in Early Modern Italy

Sandra Cavallo

Cambridge University Press
1995
pokkari
Through its examination of a city marginal to the Italian tradition of communes and city-states during the post-Renaissance period, the book offers an extended reassessment of what has been regarded as the typical Italian model of welfare. Acts of charity have often been interpreted either within a functionalist framework or merely as responses to the needs of the poor by reference to the elusive field of changing mentalités. This book seeks instead to illuminate the reasons for individuals’ involvement in charity. Analysis of the relationships of power, and conflict within the actors’ personal and political milieux, reveals that tensions within the social elites were a crucial factor in motivating charitable giving and even in shaping perceptions of the deserving poor. Special attention is paid to the symbolic and direct aims of charity, rather than to its explicit interventions. This focus on subjectivity also throws new light on the link between gender and charitable activity.
Charity in Islamic Societies

Charity in Islamic Societies

Amy Singer

Cambridge University Press
2008
pokkari
Muslim beliefs have inspired charitable giving for over fourteen centuries, yet Islamic history has rarely been examined from this perspective. In Charity in Islamic Societies, Amy Singer explains the basic concepts and institutions of Muslim charity, including the obligation to give on an annual basis. Charitable endowments shaped Muslim societies and cultures in every era. This book demonstrates how historical circumstances, social status, gender, age and other factors interacted with religious ideals to create a rich variety of charitable practices, from the beginnings of Islam to the present day. Using written texts, buildings, images and objects to anchor the discussions in each chapter, the author explores the motivations for charity, its impact on the rich and the poor, and the politicisation of charity. This lucidly written book will capture the attention of anyone who is interested in the nature of Islamic society and the role of philanthropy throughout history.
Charity, Philanthropy, and Civility in American History
The study of philanthropy has transcended the structure of traditional disciplines, often involving non-historians in historical analysis. This book presents professional historians addressing the dominant issues and theories offered to explain the history of American philanthropy and its role in American society. The essays develop and enlighten the major themes proposed by the book’s editors, in some instances taking issue with each other in the process. The overarching premise is that philanthropic activity in America has its roots in the desires of individuals to impose their visions of societal ideals or conceptions of truth upon their society. To do so, they have organized in groups, frequently defining themselves and their group’s role in society in the process.

Charity and Community in Medieval Cambridge

Charity and Community in Medieval Cambridge

Miri Rubin

Cambridge University Press
2002
pokkari
This study develops our understanding of medieval society through an examination of its charitable activities. In a detailed study of the forms in which relief was organised in medieval Cambridge and Cambridgeshire, the book unravels the economic and demographic factors which created the need for relief as well as the forms in which the community offered it. With continual reference to the religious teachings of priests and friars and the changing ideas of lay piety, Dr Rubin relates the changing forms of charitable giving to the shift in attitudes towards community and social order, towards relations between laity and clergy, and towards the poor. A local study is thus set in a wide comparative context, drawing together contributions in the fields of social, religious, economic and urban history.

"As helpful a book about the world of nonprofit boards as you'll ever come across ..." - Shirrel Rhoades, Board President, KWAHS Custom House Museum Most communities rely on services provided by nonprofit organizations: a shelter for victims of domestic violence; safe afterschool programs; emergency support for victims of fire or flood from the American Red Cross and local groups; and social need support from groups such as food pantries and homeless shelters. In addition local nonprofits augment the life of a community through arts and theater programs as well as support for the local libraries, museums and schools. There is always support to be found for animals and the environment as well. In fact, many of us find ourselves ready and willing to support an array of local nonprofits because of the work they do in addressing concerns close to us. This book does not address issues that relate to multimillion-dollar agencies, but to the challenges faced locally by staff and board members - from bylaws to human resource issues to the always necessary fundraising.
