Rhetorical Argumentation

Rhetorical Argumentation

Christopher W. Tindale

SAGE Publications Inc

The study of argumentation has primarily focused on logical and dialectical approaches, with minimal attention given to the rhetorical facets of argument. Rhetorical Argumentation: Principles of Theory and Practice approaches argumentation from a rhetorical point of view and demonstrates how logical and dialectical considerations depend on the rhetorical features of the argumentative situation. Throughout this text, author Christopher W. Tindale identifies how argumentation as a communicative practice can best be understood by its rhetorical features. Rhetorical Argumentation uniquely presents argumentation through the idea of an invitational rhetoric by encouraging readers to think about the ways in which they encounter arguments. The book explores the processes involved in the argumentative exchanges between arguers and audiences-thus, emphasizing the collaborative nature of the arguer-audience relationship in the argumentative situation. That is, argument is presented not as a set of ideas imposed upon a passive audience, but rather as a dynamic exchange wherein the audience is involved in self-persuasion.Key Features: Explores the ancient foundations of rhetoric, from Aristotle to the relatively contemporary works of Perelman and Olbrechts-Tytecta, Toulmin, and Bakhtin Includes numerous examples illustrating the ways in which the reasoning within arguments involves the audience from premise through to conclusion Presents the idea of "dialogism" drawn from the theories of Mikhail Bakhtin to create a more dynamic and interactive sense of the argumentative context Examines current theory as well as the historical relationship between argument and rhetoric Provides detailed discussions of topics such as nature of the dialogical, rhetorical context, audiences, and standards of appraisal. Rhetorical Argumentation is designed to provide advanced undergraduate and graduate students with a clear understanding of the rhetorical view of argumentation and how it can be effective in contemporary society. The book is an ideal text for courses in Communication, Rhetoric, Argumentation, Informal Logic, Critical Thinking, and Conflict Resolution.

Plato's Reasons

Plato's Reasons

Studies Plato's approach to argumentation, exploring his role as logician, rhetorician, and dialectician in a way that sees these three aspects working together. This book explores Plato's implicit understanding of argumentation by reviewing his standing as a logician, rhetorician, and dialectician. The question of his "standing" on these matters is approached on his terms (gleaned from the dialogues) rather than simply from the judgments of commentators. Traditionally, arguments are distinguished as logical, rhetorical, or dialectical, and the source of these distinctions is taken to be Aristotle. This book proceeds on the assumption that Aristotle's tripartite theory of argumentation did not arise in a vacuum and explores the different degrees to which substantive antecedents of parts of that model can be traced to Plato.

Molecular Enzymology

Molecular Enzymology

MOLECULAR ENZYMOLOGY, BECAUSE OF ITS CHEMICAL AND MATHEMATICAL content, is often regarded as a formidable and forbidding topic by undergraduates on a biology or biochemistry course, As a result of teaching enzymology to undergraduates for a number of years, we recognize the areas which appear to cause the most common difficulties in conceptual understanding. We feel that a book treating those areas by means of a logical approach carefully developed from basic principles fills a gap in the multiplicity of enzymology texts currently available. In writing this book we h;:lVe had in mind the needs of Honours Biochemistry students, in particular those who may take a special interest in enzymology. The text covers the main bulk of the material required in the second and third years of such courses. In addition, those taking courses in Biological Chemistry may well find the book to be of central interest. The book begins with a description of the fundamentals of catalysis, illustrating these with simple chemical reactions which may be supposed to serve as models of catalytic processes. Protein structure is discussed in terms of the fundamental forces which determine the shape and dynamic behaviour of protein molecules. The approach emphasizes those features thought to be most intimately involved in the catalytic function of enzyme molecules, and is illustrated with specific examples.

In 1930, Cadillac rolled out a line of new cars of unsurpassed elegance and craftsmanship that would launch the company into the top tier of luxury carmakers. While competitors produced models with eight or twelve-cylinder engines, Cadillac offered the smooth, powerful performance of a V-16. Over the next 11 years, each of the more than 4000 V-16s was as close to hand-made as a commercial auto manufacturer could come. Their drivers included statesmen, celebrities, businessmen and, sometimes, well-heeled ne'er-do-wells. Many of the cars survived wartime scrap drives, obsolescence, lack of replacement parts, neglect and the elements. This follow-up volume to Cadillac V-16s Lost and Found (2014) documents the individual stories of 67 more of these magnificent machines.

The Alzheimer's Association recently reported that over 5 million people have dementia in America. Each year, physicians diagnose about 500,000 new cases. As rates climb for dementia, researchers have broadened their sights from finding a cure to trying to prevent it. Use It or Lose It: Strategies to Prevent Dementia considers this research, and it presents two life-transforming strategies to prevent dementia before it happens. Christopher W. Bogosh, RN-BC, is a certified psychiatric-mental health nurse with over 25 years of healthcare experience.
