This book investigates Colette's variegated generic choices as so many ways of 'telling time'. It presents an argument that develops through a five-part sequence, named in homage to the sonata form: 'exposition', 'first subject', 'bridge', 'second subject' and 'recapitulation'.

Thomas Adès composed the score for the 2019 film Colette starring Keira Knightley and Dominic West, which is based on the life of the French novelist Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette. The film explores her fight for creative ownership and resistance to the societal constraints of the early 20th century. This solo piano piece appears in the end credits, played by the composer himself, and appears as the track "Colette" on the soundtrack album.
Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette was this century's first modern woman. She arrived in Paris around 1900 as the provincial child bride of a notorious rake and brilliant literary impressario, Willy, who signed her first novels, the Claudines, as his own. They invented the erotically reckless teenage girl as we know her, and became the greatest French bestsellers of all time. When this tumultuous marriage ended, Colette went off with a high-born woman lover, the virile Marquise de Belboeuf, and embarked on a flamboyant stage career. She bared her breast to raucous applause in the French music-hall and became a celebrity of the lesbian demimonde. Until her death in 1954, she continued to rewrite the rules for loving, working, and aging. At the end of the century, her life and work still have the power to challenge the norms.
The sequel to a hidden link or mystery, this novel gives us clues not only to the mysterious boy she meets dead at night in a meadow, but the even greater mystery of the girl herself. Colette's Beginning is the Link to Matthew James's child and teen years, continuing on where parts were cut out in the previous novel. Colette's blissful life with her father crumbles before her eyes when she takes a frightening dare in the meadow of her home island, just to prove that she isn't 'chicken'. Her father Steven, unable to believe what she had done, leaves home, tearing his little girl's heart and replacing his fun self with her strict mother, Brenda. However, Colette is able to turn her life around and get on just fine without her father- so everyone thinks. When it all becomes too much she runs away from home into the meadow where everything started, and meets the mysterious Matthew James! View Colette and Matthew's relationship like you've never seen it before!
