The Life and African Exploration of Dr. David Livingstone

The Life and African Exploration of Dr. David Livingstone

David Livingstone; Christopher Hibbert

During his travels as a missionary, David Livingstone beheld many previously unknown wonders of the African interior. He put Victoria Falls and Lake Ngami on the map, and was the first white man to cross the African continent. Diaries, reports and letters are combined to create a wonderful narration of Livingstone's travels in a widely unknown continent. Included in this harrowing tale is Livingstone's narrow escape from a lion's wrath, his negotiations with an African chief, and his account of the Portuguese slave traders brutally punishing slaves after their attempt to escape. The Life and African Explorations of Livingstone also reveals Livingstone's deeply-rooted Christian beliefs and the strength he took from them, strength that allowed him to live and thrive amid the hardships of equatorial Africa.

Part biography, part medical history, and part study of Jewish life in turn-of-the-century America, Jeanne Abrams's book tells the story of Dr. Charles David Spivak - a Jewish immigrant from Russia who became one of the leaders of the American Tuberculosis Movement.Born in Russia in 1861, Spivak immigrated to the United States in 1882 and received his medical degree from Philadelphia's Jefferson Medical College by 1890. In 1896, his wife's poor health brought them to Colorado. Determined to find a cure, Spivak became one of the most charismatic and well-known leaders in the American Tuberculosis Movement. His role as director of Denver's Jewish Consumptives' Relief Society sanatorium allowed his personal philosophies to strongly influence policies. His unique blend of Yiddishkeit, socialism, and secularism - along with his belief in treating the "whole" patient - became a model for integrating medical, social, and rehabilitation services that was copied across the country. Not only a national leader in the crusade against tuberculosis but also a luminary in the American Jewish community, Dr. Charles Spivak was a physician, humanitarian, writer, linguist, journalist, administrator, social worker, ethnic broker, and medical, public health, and social crusader. Abrams's biography will be a welcome addition to anyone interested in the history of medicine, Jewish life in America, or Colorado history.
David and the Goliath Within: The Autobiography of David Lee Hereford: Foreword by Dr. Tonia Hamilton Butler
"Freshness has no smell" sliding down in life to the perplexities of struggle. One thing that individuals will come to the realization is that new experiences are what makes or breaks us. Sometimes these experiences happen on the outskirts of our psyche, other times they are part of us. But the newness of the experience is void of any smell from the past; by nature it cannot make a declaration to move is if it is contaminating yesterday's odor. This was the lesson that author David Lee Hereford had to learn. It has because of a long, contaminated journey through sex, infidelity, abandonment, superficial relationships and finally cancer, that has forced him to face the Goliath from within. This is a journey of realization and reflection, one of the reader will not be able to forget. It is a bold message that continues to be perpetual because life is organic and although the struggle continues both physically and emotionally, the author continues to prevail.

"Dave has always been my friend, and he has always been one of my heroes too. He could walk that walk and talk that talk. David Schultz was a man's man. As fearless as he was dangerous, yet one of the most honorable wrestlers the wrestling business ever knew." - Bret "Hitman" Hart, Two-time WWE Hall of FamerAsk anyone who watched wrestling in the early 80s who the most dangerous man in wrestling was and they will tell you it was Dr. D. Trained by Herb Welch, the Tennessee native terrorized fans in Tennessee, Memphis, Florida, Calgary, Japan and Minnesota before being recruited into the WWF at the request of Hulk Hogan. Dr. D was a singles and tag team champion for multiple promotions, and he faced some of the most dangerous men in the business: Antonio Inoki, Abdullah the Butcher, Bruiser Brody, and Johnny Rodz. Yet he is remembered to this day for taking down a very different opponent: ABC reporter John Stossel, who dared to utter the words, "I think this is fake." While the Stossel incident precipitated the end of his wrestling career, but it's hardly the end of the story. Dr. D turned babyface in real life, finding an even greater calling as a professional bounty hunter. Working out of Connecticut, Dr. D traveled the world and brought back hundreds of "skips" who had fled from justice. Dr. D tracked fugitives from New York to California to Puerto Rico and even Egypt with a 100% capture rate. If he couldn't coax you into coming back of your own free will, he still possessed the skills taught by Herb Welch that could turn even the biggest thug into a crybaby. Call him a wrestler. Call him a bounty hunter. Just don't call him fake Dr. D David Schultz is the real deal, a hero in the wrestling locker room who became an even greater hero in his post wrestling career, clearing the streets of dangerous men and women with his Southern charm and a shooter's grip.
