At Drake's Command: The Adventures of Peregrine James During the Second Circumnavigation of the World
It was as fine a day to be whipped as any he'd ever seen but the good weather didn't make Peregrine James any happier with the situation he was in. Unfairly convicted of a crime he had not committed, the young cook was strung from the whipping post on the Plymouth quayside when he caught the eye of Francis Drake and managed to convince the charismatic sea captain to accept him among his crew.Soon England was receding in their wake and Perry was serving an unsavory collection of sea dogs as the small fleet of fragile wood ships sailed across the deep brine. Their destination was secret, known to Drake alone. Few sailors believed the public avowal that the expedition was headed for Alexandria to trade in currants. Some men suspected Drake planned a raid across Panama to attack the Spanish in the Pacific. Others were sure the real plan was to round the Cape of Storms to break the Portuguese monopoly of the spice trade. The only thing Perry knew for certain was that they were bound for danger and that he must live by his wits if he were to survive serving at Drake's command.

The Drake Relays are one of the iconic events of track and field in the United States. World and Olympic champions test their speed and stamina on the famed Blue Oval in Des Moines, Iowa, every April, and by spring 2013 they had set fourteen world records and fifty-one American records. But unlike most other top meets, this one also features college athletes from all over the country and high school athletes from across Iowa, giving them the experience of a lifetime - competing on the same track with the elite in their sport. This mix brings many enthusiastic spectators to the stadium and makes for an unusually close bond between fans and athletes - it’s as if everyone’s family is there cheering.Pulitzer Prize–winning photographer David Peterson has been covering the Drake Relays for nearly forty years, but his love affair with the meet started earlier, when he ran on three winning relay teams there for Kansas State University. Now, drawing upon an unmatched personal archive, he offers the pictures of a lifetime spent on the Blue Oval. He captures on camera athletes of all levels in triumph and defeat, in mid-stride or leap, embracing their fans, their mums and dads, and their kids. In addition to the stars of the past, such as Carl Lewis, Suzy Favor Hamilton, and Herschel Walker, and those of the ’00s, like Lolo Jones and Jeremy Wariner, we see teenagers who may be the stars of the future, as well as the many athletes who will never be famous but nonetheless show themselves - and their sport - at their best.A beautiful celebration of the Drake Relays and the diverse sports that make up “track and field,” this book will evoke memories and inspire runners, throwers and jumpers everywhere.

Book 6 in the Matt Drake series. These books should be read in the correct order. A last stand is coming - a battle of battles. Matt Drake and the SPEAR team return in a brand new action-packed adventure When Drake is captured and sent to a remote Russian prison, little does he know that the last remaining member of the Shadow Elite has already set in motion a reckless, uncompromising plan to control or destroy all life on Earth. The battle for the survival of the human race begins in ancient Babylon, where Alexander the Great discovered and warned of a second way to activate Odin's doomsday device. His solution was to forge seven swords of Babylon and connect them to the Tower of Babel. Drake's team enter a deadly race to find and discover how to use these swords to combat the catastrophically powerful weapon of the gods before it's too late. If they fail and the doomsday device is activated, the world will burn. Through high camaraderie, betrayal, and endless twists and turns, the team launch a rescue attempt for Drake, then face skirmishes in Russia's Red Square, and fights among the ruins of Babylon until they come to a final desperate battle where all three tombs and the darkest black hole in existence - the ancient Pit of Babylon - have to be assaulted simultaneously. This superb new collection of over 200 archive images, while guaranteed to fascinate bus enthusiasts, will also have huge appeal to the many thousands who have travelled the inner circle route or who simply have an interest in the history of Birmingham.Known in its time as the ‘Workmen’s Special’ the number 8 route served the workers for some of Birmingham’s best known employers, such as Lucas, Ansells Brewery, HP Sauce, B.S.A. and Bulpitts. Many will remember the Victorian back-to-backs on the route, demolished years ago, where many of those same workers lived before moving away to newly built estates. Not only do the scenes and the buses show just how much times have changed, the informative captions that accompany each picture remind us of a different era. Instead of radios and CCTV the standard equipment on the first buses included rope, spark plug, whistle, matches and a candle! This was a time when conductors would actually escort younger passengers from the bus right to their front door. Recalling the history of Birmingham through this novel perspective makes for a truly enthralling read.

The No. 11 bus route journeys around a twenty-six mile perimeter of Birmingham, following the Outer Circle through many of the city's suburbs including Harborne, King's Heath, Acocks Green, Yardley, Stechford, Bromford, Erdington, Stockland Green, Handsworth Wood and Bearwood. It came into operation in April 1926 and has changed en route during the eighty years in which the service has been running. The buses too have changed, from solic tyres and conductors to double-deckers and suspension. This superb new selection of over 200 old photographs, many published here for the first time, have been drawn from David Harvey's own collection and that of the Local Studies section of Birmingham Central Library. These rare images recall local street scenes, important buildings, shops and pubs, including The King's Head, The Swan and The Yew Tree, which served as destination points along this popular and busy route. This book is a fascinating accompaniment to the author's publication The Inner Circle: Birmingham's No. 8 Bus Route and is sure to appeal to transport enthusiasts, commutes and anyone else with an interest in the history of Birmingham.
Reforming the Health Care Market

Reforming the Health Care Market

David F. Drake

Georgetown University Press
1994

Examining the health care market in a historical framework, Drake analyzes the forces and events that have shaped American health care in the twentieth century and sheds new light on why and how our health care system has dampened competitive market forces and failed to provide sound value for much of our health care expenditures. He examines the roles that physicians, hospitals, insurance companies, businesses, individual consumers, and government legislation have played in creating a provider-dominated market in which the cost of care has been concealed from consumers. Comparing U.S. health care expenditures with those of other developed countries, he concludes that a significant part of our health care problem is the style of medicine practiced in the United States, which is much more specialized and high tech than in other developed nations. Drake develops proposals for health care financing reform that consider the political and economic difficulties involved. He first examines the Clinton health care reform plan and makes specific recommendations for revisions that would improve its likelihood of controlling costs. He then offers an alternative proposal that would both maintain the principle of universal, noncancelable coverage and eliminate the flaws in the market for health care services by giving consumers a financial stake in cost containment. This timely argument, combining economic and historical analysis with thoughtful consideration of the motivating humanitarian and political concerns, will be of interest to everyone seeking to understand and to reform our ailing health care system.

The question of the existence and nature of scribal institutions in ancient Israel has up to now been debated primarily on literary grounds. In placing the question of scribes and schools in a socio-archaeological context, as the present study does, this problem is reformulated. The focus shifts from the question of the prevalence of literary skills to the broader question of the function of those skills within ancient society.
