The End of Harry Potter?: An Unauthorized Guide to the Mysteries That Remain
In The End of Harry Potter?, David Langford--Potter fan and award-winning writer--examines the many mysteries that remained unsolved prior to publication of the final volume of J. K. Rowling's magical series. The publication of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the seventh and final Harry Potter novel, was one of the most eagerly anticipated events in the history of publishing. Even the smallest hints from the author about what may happen to Harry and his friends generated major news stories. Is Albus Dumbledore really dead? Whose side is Severus Snape really on? What are the remaining horcruxes, where He Who Shall Not Be Named has stashed his soul? Does Harry bear a part of the Dark Lord's soul in his scar, and is this why he understands Parseltongue? In this highly entertaining book, Langford uses his deep knowledge of the six published Harry Potter novels to explore these and other mysteries, and to present a selection of possible outcomes. While Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows may lay these questions to rest, Potter fans will still find David Langford's book enchanting and thought-provoking, and a perfect way to refresh their memory of the first six books in this beloved series.

The New Hamburg Pottery was one of the twelve potteries in Waterloo County, Ontario, during the last half of the nineteenth century. The works was a family-operated business during most of its history. It was owned by members of the Boehler family until 1894 then continued under a succession of owners until 1916. The pottery depended on a local supply of inexpensive clay, lead for glaze, and on a nearby market for the earthenware containers produced at the works. The New Hamburg works was one of the last potteries in the country to close its doors and one of a very few potteries in the province to operate beyond the first decade of this century. This book provides a history of the pottery, information about the site and the excavations, and the various types of pottery produced.
The Historical Archaeology of Pottery Supply and Demand in the Lower Rhineland, AD 1400-1800
This study of post-medieval ceramic production and consumption in the Lower Rhineland is prefaced by a survey of previous work and approaches in the field. With the initiation of large-scale urban excavations in the Lower Rhineland during the 1980s, particularly in the town of Duisburg, an extensive sequence of pottery has been recovered dating from c .1400 to 1800, enabling archaeologists for the first time to re-examine traditional chronologies, attributions and socio-economic interpretations. This survey comprises 95 individual assemblages of pottery from sites excavated in Duisburg and from towns and rural sites in the region. (Studies in Contemporary and Historical Archaeology is a new series of edited and single-authored volumes intended to make available current work on the archaeology of the recent and contemporary past. The series brings together contributions from academic historical archaeologists, professional archaeologists and practitioners from cognate disciplines who are engaged with archaeological material and practices.)

Prophecy and History in the Crisis of the Roman Empire
The Sibylline Oracles (sacred prophecies) which provide narratives of Roman history are our best sources for popular understanding of contemporar y events, since they were written by those with no obvious connection with the government. The thirteenth is of particular interest because it remains the only first-hand narrative of the critical years of the mid-third century AD when the empire teetered on the brink of political collapse. This book contains a full introduction describing the political history of the third century, the other historiography of the period, and the development of the tradition of Sibylline Oracles, their authorship and readership. There follows a new edition of the text (the first since 1902) and a detailed commentary which discusses disputed points of chronology, and the impact on the authors (living in Roman Syria) of the Persian invasions, which culminated in the sack of Antioch in 252, and the capture of the emperor Valerian by the Persian King Sapor in 260.

America has long been famous as a land of plenty, but we seldom realize how much the American people are a people of plenty—a people whose distinctive character has been shaped by economic abundance. In this important book, David M. Potter breaks new ground both in the study of this phenomenon and in his approach to the question of national character. He brings a fresh historical perspective to bear on the vital work done in this field by anthropologists, social psychologists, and psychoanalysts. "The rejection of hindsight, with the insistence on trying to see events from the point of view of the participants, was a governing theme with Potter. . . . This sounds like a truism. Watching him apply it however, is a revelation."—Walter Clemons, Newsweek "The best short book on national character I have seen . . . broadly based, closely reasoned, and lucidly written."—Karl W. Deutsch, Yale Review
Lincoln and His Party in the Secession Crisis

Lincoln and His Party in the Secession Crisis

Originally published in 1942, this perceptive and impartial analysis of one of the most baffling periods in American history, the months between the election of Lincoln and the fall of Fort Sumter, was a bold declaration of intellectual independence. David M. Potter revolted against the prevailing southern argument that Lincoln deliberately provoked the South into war to bring a violent end to slavery, arguing instead that the new president followed the least aggressive course available to him in dealing with the secession crisis.Based on a painstaking examination of the writings and statements of both the northern principal players in the crisis and other, lesser-known Republicans who revealed the sentiment of the party's rank and file, this groundbreaking study details the Republicans' attitudes to the threat of secession, their reaction to the actual withdrawal of the southern states, and their faith that the Union could be restored without violence. Daniel W. Crofts provides a new Introduction, setting Potter's account in the context of contemporary literature.
