A Supplement to Notae Latinae

Doris Bains; W. M. Lindsay

pokkari
Originally published in 1936, this book is intended to supplement W. M. Lindsay's Notae Latinae of 1915, which examined Latin abbreviations of the early minuscule period (circa 700–850 AD). Bains reviews symbols employed in the following two centuries, as well as a few which were developed more fully as a result of the rise of learning and science in the twelfth century. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in palaeography.

Web Forum Retrieval and Text Analytics: A Survey presents an overview of information retrieval, natural language processing and machine learning research that makes use of forum data, including both discussion forums and community question-answering (cQA) archives. The focus is on automated analysis, with the goal of providing the reader with a better understanding of the data and its users. It discusses the different strategies used for both retrieval tasks (post retrieval, question retrieval, and answer retrieval) and classification tasks (post type classification, question classification, post quality assessment, subjectivity, and viewpoint classification) at the post level, as well as at the thread level (thread retrieval, solvedness and task orientation, discourse structure recovery and dialogue act tagging, QA-pair extraction, and thread summarisation). It also reviews work on forum users, including user satisfaction, expert finding, question recommendation and routing, and community analysis. Web Forum Retrieval and Text Analytics: A Survey includes a brief history of forums, an overview of the different kinds of forums, a summary of publicly available datasets for forum research, and a short discussion on the evaluation of retrieval tasks using forum data. Covering 450 papers, it provides the reader with a broad overview of the different kinds of forum research, a summary of the methods that have been applied, some insights into successful strategies, and potential areas for future research.

This volume looks at school-university partnerships from sociocultural perspectives of learning that view participation in social practice as fundamental to the process of learning. Its two major themes – school-university partnership and sociocultural and social theories of learning – have both been treated extensively in the literature. It is the bringing together of these two themes that makes this book unique. In this examination of an evolving model of school-university partnership, the Unified Professional Development Project in Hong Kong, the authors analyze the learning that takes place as the participants (student-teachers, mentor teachers, and university supervisors) mutually engage in the enterprise of improving teaching and learning in schools, developing shared practices, and creating new communities of practice. Although it describes one specific context, the book is not just about this locale. Rather, the Unified Professional Development Project is used as a context for theorizing more generally a social theory of learning for school-university partnerships that is relevant to any other similar context. This book will interest teacher educators, researchers in teacher education and teacher development, policy makers, and school practitioners who are involved in school-university partnerships.
Serial Killers - Philosophy for Everyone Lib/E: Being and Killing
They terrify us, and yet we love to read about them, to watch films about them, and some even fantasize about meeting them; this is the horror-pleasure reaction to serial killers whose gruesome acts hold a deep and disturbing lure. Serial Killers - Philosophy for Everyone offers a philosophical examination of real and fictional serial killers, and investigates our profound intrigue with serial-murderers. Authors from various academic fields, as well as true crime writers and police officers delve into such questions as: What drives people to kill repeatedly? Can a serial killer be good and moral? What is it about serial killers that fascinates us? Do serial killers such as Ian Brady, Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, Jeffrey Dahmer and the Zodiac killer, or fictional characters such as Dexter or Hannibal Lecter, make us understand ourselves differently? Investigating existential, ethical and political questions via real murder cases, this is a philosophical examination of our enduring fascination with these grisly figures.

Courts, Law, and Politics in Comparative Perspective

Courts, Law, and Politics in Comparative Perspective

Herbert Jacob; Erhard Blankenburg; Herbert M. Kritzer; Doris Marie Provine; Joseph Sanders

Yale University Press
1996
pokkari
This comprehensive book compares the intersection of political forces and legal practices in five industrial nations—the United States, England, France, Germany, and Japan. The authors, eminent political scientists and legal scholars, investigate how constitutional courts function in each country, how the adjudication of criminal justice and the processing of civil disputes connect legal systems to politics, and how both ordinary citizens and large corporations use the courts. For each of the five countries, the authors discuss the structure of courts and access to them, the manner in which politics and law are differentiated or amalgamated, whether judicial posts are political prizes or bureaucratic positions, the ways in which courts are perceived as legitimate forms for addressing political conflicts, the degree of legal consciousness among citizens, the kinds of work lawyers do, and the manner in which law and courts are used as social control mechanisms. The authors find that although the extent to which courts participate in policymaking varies dramatically from country to country, judicial responsiveness to perceived public problems is not a uniquely American phenomenon.

This book addresses the challenges of designing high performance analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) based on the “smart data converters” concept, which implies context awareness, on-chip intelligence and adaptation. Readers will learn to exploit various information either a-priori or a-posteriori (obtained from devices, signals, applications or the ambient situations, etc.) for circuit and architecture optimization during the design phase or adaptation during operation, to enhance data converters performance, flexibility, robustness and power-efficiency. The authors focus on exploiting the a-priori knowledge of the system/application to develop enhancement techniques for ADCs, with particular emphasis on improving the power efficiency of high-speed and high-resolution ADCs for broadband multi-carrier systems.

In vivo magnetic resonance spectrosopy (MRS) is increasingly being used in the clinical setting, particularly for neurological disorders. Clinical MR Spectroscopy – Techniques and Applications explains both the underlying physical principles of MRS and provides a perceptive review of clinical MRS applications. Topics covered include an introduction to MRS physics, information content of spectra from different organ systems, spectral analysis methods, recommended protocols and localization techniques, and normal age- and region-related spectral variations in the brain. Clinical applications in the brain are discussed for brain tumors, hypoxic and ischemic injury, infectious, inflammatory and demyelinating diseases, epilepsy, neurodegenerative disorders, trauma and metabolic diseases. Outside of the brain, techniques and applications are discussed for MRS in the musculosketal system, breast and prostate. Written by leading MRS experts, this is an invaluable guide for anyone interested in in vivo MRS, including radiologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, oncologists and medical researchers.
