Written by my grandfather, Marion Gray, in 1925, never published. Given to my mom after his death in 1971, she passed it to me in 1981. It is a coming of age story in NW Illinois of Marion Gray's 1916 senior year of high school. Working six months after at the local Five and Ten store, then wandered and worked thinking about his girl, and whether to join the war. He enlists and selects aviation. He describes being in Army camps in Missouri, Texas, and Tennessee awaiting an aviation pilot slot. Finally in late 1917 he accepts a volunteer spot to go to France as a medic; called "Sanitary Detachment" then.Marion describes crossing the Atlantic w/ destroyer escort, into France. There he marches places, rides rough train cars, gets shelled, watches planes fight, into the battle of Verdun. At the front and behind lines, he describes funny times and sad. After the war, he returns home, goes to work again for the Five and Ten as a manager in Wisconsin stores, ultimately gets married, and ends in 1923.Marion's grandson and co-author, Don, typed in the 94 year old manuscript in 2021, editing some, scanned the postcards. In the book he describes sewing on his division patch, I have the jacket he wore, with his sewed on Blue & Gray division patch from 1918.

"If you are at all curious about the brain or the surgeons who operate on it, Gray Matters is a must read and Dr. Theodore Schwartz is the perfect guide, a master brain surgeon and superbly talented writer. I have not read a better biography of our shared profession, and in Schwartz's talented hands, the most enigmatic 3 1/2 pounds of tissue in the known universe comes to light in remarkable and revelatory ways."--Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN Chief Medical Correspondent, and New York Times and #1 Wall Street Journal bestselling author of Keep Sharp: Build a Better Brain at Any Age A popular biography of brain surgery, by one of its preeminent practitioners We've all heard the phrase "it's not brain surgery." But what exactly is brain surgery? It's a profession that is barely a hundred years old and profoundly connects two human beings, but few know how it works, or its history. How did early neurosurgeons come to understand the human brain--an extraordinarily complex organ that controls everything we do, and yet at only three pounds is so fragile? And how did this incredibly challenging and lifesaving specialty emerge? In this warm, rigorous, and deeply insightful book, Dr. Theodore H. Schwartz explores what it's like to hold the scalpel, wield the drill, extract a tumor, fix a bullet hole, and remove a blood clot--when every second can mean life or death. Drawing from the author's own cases, plus media, sports, and government archives, this seminal work delves into all the brain-related topics that have long-consumed public curiosity, like what really happened to JFK, President Biden's brain surgery, and the NFL's management of CTE. Dr. Schwartz also surveys the field's latest incredible advances and discusses the philosophical questions of the unity of the self and the existence of free will. A neurosurgeon as well as a professor of neurosurgery at Weill Cornell Medical Center at New York Presbyterian Hospital, one of the busiest and most highly ranked neurosurgery centers in the world, Dr. Schwartz tells this story like no one else could. Told through anecdote and clear explanation, this is the ultimate cultural and scientific history of a literally mind-blowing human endeavor, one that cuts to the core of who we are.

You've read Hannibal's side. Now, read mine. Can one person really help you kill the monster inside? Maybe... I'm not a good guy. But, I love my little brother and I will do whatever it takes to keep him safe; the last thing I need is another dead body on my conscience. There were only two things I wanted in life; be there for Matty and lose myself for long enough to get some respite from the horrors of our past. Until I met her; the mud-streaked girl with the ability to arouse my mind as well as...other things. My captain of the A-team, Hannibal is as sweet and smart as she is sexy. But, the monster of my past - the one that created a monster in me - will not die and I can't bring her into that. I try to pull away, to save her from the pain I'll inevitably bring her. Except, my Hannibal's a fighter and she won't give up on me. No matter how many reasons I give her, that thing - that bond - between us only strengthens. Maybe Hannibal's the reason I've been looking for to finally put the monster of my past to rest. Maybe she can give me the strength to finally kill the monster that lurks within me. Could she be my Gray's Blade? A sizzling YA romance about first love and learning to let go of a painful past, this is Cole's story from his point of view. The companion novel, No More Maybes, is from Aurora's point of view; much like the characters themselves, Aurora's version is lighter, cleaner, and sweeter. Read through to the end of Gray's Blade for a sneak peek at chapter one of Aurora's side.

In middle age Spalding Gray has entered "the Bermuda Triangle of Health," that place where the body begins to break down in alarming and humiliating ways. His immediate problem is an eye complaint that could be corrected with minor surgery. But for the high priest of high anxiety, nothing is ever minor. And so Gray embarks on a crazed crusade for wellness that takes him from a Native American sweat lodge to a dictatorial nutritionist and, finally, to a gory session with the "Elvis Presley of psychic surgeons" in the Far East.Exquisitely timed, unfettered in its intelligence, and funny enough to push readers to the brink of cardiac arrest, Gray's Anatomy is a surreal tour de force of body and soul. "Gray has turned his trademark navel-gazing into looking himself in the eye -- literally...A witty tour through the world of alternative medicine and his own anxieties." -- Washington Post"One of the funniest travelogues of the human landscape [Gray] has yet spun out...As close as he has ever been to becoming a stand-up comedian. God bless him for it." -- Chicago Tribune"Spalding Gray may be the nation's most outstanding storyteller. Nothing eludes his eye or the sureness of his satire. The secret of his success is the skewed angle of vision -- his eccentric wit and ruthless candor." -- Los Angeles Times
