Archaeological investigations at the prehispanic Ejutla site in Oaxaca, Mexico, have had a foundational role in reframing our perspectives on Mesoamerican economies, specifically craft specialization. This volume reports on the excavations of a residential complex located at the southern limits of the Valley of Oaxaca system, where evidence was recovered for multiple craft activities associated with a single non-elite domestic unit. The residential occupants crafted a variety of ornaments from marine shell, mostly sourced to the Pacific Coast, but few were consumed by the householders themselves. In addition, the Ejutla craftworkers produced a range of ceramic utilitarian vessels, including domestic wares and figurines, as well as small lapidary objects. Many of the craft goods produced were destined for exchange, circulating in both local and longer-distance networks. The findings have laid a basis for new theorizing on prehispanic economic production and the revision of prior notions that presumed principally local economies, in which specialized production for exchange was centered in nondomestic workshops.

Philosophy and Politics at the Precipice maintains that political philosopher Alexandre Kojève (1901–68) has been both famously misunderstood and famous for being misunderstood. Kojève was famously understood by interpreters for seeing an "end of history" (an end that would display universal free democracies and even freer markets) as critical to his thought. He became famously misunderstood when interpreters, at the end of the twentieth century, placed such an end at the center of his thought. This book reads Kojève again – as a thinker of time, not its end. It presents Kojève as a philosopher and precisely as a time phenomenologist, rather than as a New Age guru. The book shows how Kojève’s time is inherently political, and indeed tyrannical, for being about his understanding of human relation. However, Kojève’s views on time and tyranny prove his undoing for making rule impossible because of what the book terms the "time-tyrant problem." Kojève’s entire political corpus is best understood as an attempt to rectify this problem. So understood, Philosophy and Politics at the Precipice provides fresh perspective on the true nature of Kojèvian irony, Kojève’s aims in the Strauss–Kojève exchange, and how Kojève at his best captures a philosophical, phenomenological time, one that marks some of the most dynamic and unique events of the twentieth century. Headlines have largely erased the notion that history has ended. Philosophy and Politics at the Precipice, on the other hand, provides the philosophical justification for arguing that the end of the last millennium was not an end and that, for his view of time, Kojève remains a thinker for the times ahead.

Many parents experience fear, shame, and loss upon learning that their child is same-sex oriented or gender non-conforming. Therapies to help parents become more accepting and foster meaningful relationships with their LGBTQ+ children are critical. Ongoing parental criticism, invalidation, and rejection of one's sexual or gender identity can take a profound psychological toll and lead to internalized homophobia, expectations for future gay-related rejection by others, depression, and other negative impacts. In contrast, parental acceptance is associated with lower rates of suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts, higher self-esteem, higher levels of perceived social support, lower levels of psychological symptoms, and better general health. While most parents become more accepting, or at least more tolerant, over time, others remain partially or fully rejecting even years after learning of their child's identity. While Todd and Ricky dreamt about being Astronauts, an old Apollo Lunar Module that mysteriously returned to Earth is forming an Asteroid of space junk. Todd and Ricky attended Space Camp, but Todd fails during all the events, and becomes depressed. So during a tour of the launch pad, where the Magellan Five rocket is posed for a mission to get rid of the Asteroid, Todd and Ricky sneak inside the capsule. They accidently get locked in a cabinet, and are now stuck inside the capsule. The Magellan Five rocket launches with the stowaway boys and heads to the Asteroid. The boys are found, but are forced to stay with the Astronauts. After they dock with the old Lunar Module they found a friendly Alien inside. But the Astronauts ripped their spacesuits, and now it's up to Todd and Ricky to perform the historic mission of getting the Asteroid ready to fly into deep space. But space junk smacks into the Magellan capsule while it watches the boys and the Alien on top of the Asteroid. The Magellan capsule flies off toward the Moon leaving the boys and the Alien alone. The Magellan capsule later landed on the Moon. Then despite numerous threats, the boys and the Alien survive and complete preparing the Asteroid for its journey into deep space. They are now faced with flying off with the Asteroid, but the Magellan capsule mysteriously flies back from the Moon. After some more dilemmas were overcome, the Asteroid is finally flown away from Earth, and the boys were deemed heroes.

Lasers are relatively recent additions to the analytical scientist's arsenal. Because of this, many analysts-whether their concern is research or some range of applications-are in need of a tutorial introduction not only to the principles of lasers, their optics, and radiation, but also to their already diverse and burgeoning applications. The artic1es presented in this volume, carefully enhanced and edited from lectures prepared for the ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry 1979 Summer Symposium, are designed to provide just such a broad introduction to the subject. Thus, in addition to several excellent chapters on laser fundamentals, there are many practically oriented artic1es dealing with laser analytical methodology, inc1uding techniques based on the absorption oflaser radiation, on laser-induced fluorescence, and on some of the uses of lasers in chemical instru mentation. The first of these sections is pivotal and reflects in part our philosophy in organizing this collection. The authors of the initial chapters were invited not only because of their expertise in the field of lasers and analytical chemistry, but also because their didactic approach to writing and their c1arity of presentation were well known to us. I am gratified that there is sufficient interest in the subject matter so as to support the offering of a second edition of this monograph. The of differential games dynamic interpretation and game theoretic foundation form a powerful and vital methodology for helping us study and understand marketing competition. This second edition offers a blend of what proved to be successful with the first edition and new material. The first two chapters, reviewing empirical and modeling research, have been updated to include contributions in the last decade that have advanced the area. I have not changed the essential content in the duopoly analyses in chapters 3, 4, and 5. A notable addition to the present edition are the new chapters, 6, 7, and 8, which offer analysis of three triopoly models. In the final chapter, I offer my summary view of the area and hope for continued contributions. I want to express my appreciation for the support of Josh Eliashberg, editor of the International Series in Quantitative Marketing, as well as Zachary Rolnik, Director, and David Cella, Publishing Editor, of Kluwer. The Big Sur Trilogy is the story about one of the last pioneer families in America who lived freely and self-sufficiently in a remote area of the central California known as Big Sur. The Trilogy spans over 100 years and depicts the hard but rewarding life of three generations of the Zande Allan family. The Big Sur Coast extends 100 miles from Carmel to San Simeon and is bordered by the Santa Lucia Mountains and Pacific Ocean. This remote wilderness contains some of the most rugged terrain in the American continent. From the beginning of time the south coast was accessible only by foot, mule or horseback. Although inhabited by three nomadic American Indian tribes, the Spaniards refused to travel along the coast because of the high mountains, steep canyons and deepwater crossings.In the 1870s a wagon road was built from Mal Paso Crossing to Bixby Creek Ranch. The next 74 miles of the Coast was not accessible by auto until 1937 with the opening of Highway One, which took eighteen years to build, mostly by convict labor using dynamite and steam shovels.When completed, it became the only road in the United States that went directly from a horse trail to an auto road, thus bypassing the traditional, interim wagon road. The road changed forever the lives of the Big Sur homesteaders as the mainstream modern American culture motored into their once-private coast.Before the road, few 'outlanders' visited the south coast because travel was strenuous, the trail precarious and the homesteads were few and far between, but those who ventured there were greeted with coast hospitality, lively conversation and ranch grown food.The Big Sur pioneer families worked long hours and full days with little time for frills or fancy things, and they had no patience for what was not plain spoken. A trip to Monterey to buy supplies or to Salinas to sell cattle took three hard days by horseback along narrow trails at the edge of granite cliffs often falling straight to the sea some 2000 feet below. Twice a year the ranchers would gather for a coast barbecue with neighbors on the beach while waiting for the cargo schooner to arrive and winch ashore their load of hard stock supplies too bulky for pack mule or horse.The third novel of the Big Sur Trilogy begins in 1909 on the 21st birthday of the third Zande Allen, who grew up under his Grampa's sharp eyes and stern ways. Zan revered his grandfather as the wisest of men and his Grampa fancied Zan as the finest fruit from his family tree.Enroute to the annual roundup, Zan helps the road survey crew and earns his first three dollars. Zande gives Zan land and stock, if he can fence it in thirty days. Feeling flush, Zan promises to buy his sister, Maria, a bed, but is shocked by the price. To keep his word he earns money working on the road while he also builds fence. When Old Zande discovers his split loyalties, they clash and Zan gives back the ranch and cattle, then goes to work on the road. Maria invites Zan to dinner as thanks for her bed but enroute Zan hears a shot and discovers his flirty young cousin Tillie had killed her beau because she carried his child but he refused to marry her. To save her reputation, Zan confesses to the crime and goes to prison. Seven years later Zan returns and realizes his love for Lara, a child adopted by his parents and ten years younger, but thinking that no respectable woman would want a convict for a husband, he withholds his feelings. Lara's friend is arrested for running rum and leaves the Coast again to help build Boulder Dam.Upon his next return to Big Sur, to his dismay Lara is not there but may return on July 4, 1937 for Pioneer Day, the grand opening of the new road. Grampa Zande, now a hundred, still curses the road and plots to stop if from opening, which conflicts with young Zande's eagerness for the road to be open. The fateful day of opening Highway One brings many surprises for the road, Grandpa and the love between Zan and Lara.
