Illness is a matter of concern in every society. Social responses to it depend both on the nature of the illness and on cultural interpretation of its significance. This study of the occurrence, recognition and explanation of illness amongst the Gnau makes use of its author's dual training in medicine and anthropology to show why, how far, and in what respects these people of a forest village in New Guinea turn to their religious and magical knowledge in the distress of illness. I began writing poems in 2021 to express my feelings, experiences, and emotions because I lost my musical expression outlet to Parkinson's Disease. When I realized I had compiled many poems, I decided to explore songs and poems I had written since 1985, and I noticed a recurring theme. Finally, this book accentuates the courage of these individuals to allow all of us to see the courageous person within us and be inspired to fight onward when things seem hopeless.The true inspiration for this book, and the series to follow, came to me as I read The Greener Side of the Tracks, a song I wrote in 1985. When I wrote that song, my heart hurt for the thirteen migrants that died in the Arizona desert. I prayed for them and vowed that I would speak for them. Therein lies the reason for this book: so that I might speak for those without a voice.

Research on language universals and research on linguistic typology are not antagonistic, but rather complementary approaches to the same fundamental problem: the relationship between the amazing diversity of languages and the profound unity of language. Only if the true extent of typological divergence is recognized can universal laws be formulated. In recent years it has become more and more evident that a broad range of languages of radically different types must be carefully analyzed before general theories are possible. Typological comparison of this kind is now at the centre of linguistic research. The series empirical approaches to language typology presents a platform for contributions of all kinds to this rapidly developing field. The distinctive feature of the series is its markedly empirical orientation. All conclusions to be reached are the result of a deepened study of empirical data. General problems are focused on from the perspective of individual languages, language families, language groups, or language samples.
