The Best of A. A. Gill

The Best of A. A. Gill

Adrian Gill

For over twenty years, people turned to A. A. Gill's columns every Sunday - for his fearlessness, his perception, and the laughter-and-tear-provoking one-liners - but mostly because he was the best. 'By miles the most brilliant journalist of our age', as Lynn Barber put it. This is the definitive collection of a voice that was silenced too early but that can still make us look at the world in new and surprising ways.In the words of Andrew Marr, A.. A. Gill was 'a golden writer'. There was nothing that he couldn't illuminate with his dazzling prose. Wherever he was - at home or abroad - he found the human story, brought it to vivid life, and rendered it with fierce honesty and bracing compassion. And he was just as truthful about himself. There have been various collections of A. A. Gill's journalism - individual compilations of his restaurant and TV criticism, of his travel writing and his extraordinary feature articles. This book showcasesthe very best of his work: the peerlessly funny criticism, the extraordinarily knowledgeable food writing, assignments throughout the world, and reflections on life, love, and death. Drawn from a range of publications, including the Sunday Times, Vanity Fair, Tatler and Australian Gourmet Traveller, The Ivy Cookbook and his books on England and America, it is by turns hilarious, uplifting, controversial, unflinching, sad, funny and furious.

Saga Indicus traces the origins of the Indian Jatts. Agriculturists, warriors, and now represented in all the professions, they are mainly found in Punjab, Sindh, Rajputana and the western portion of the Gangetic Doab. The origins of Jatts cannot be traced without exploring ancient Indian history which takes the lion's share of Indo-European studies. The origin of the Jatt people is traceable through the meaning of the word itself, referred to in Panini's Ashtadyayi, and further back in The Mahabharta itself. The trail of overlapping meanings leads back in time from Panini (450BC)'s Ashtadyayi to The Mahabharta, and forward in time to the present-day Jatts and their constituent Gill clan. Saga Indicus undertakes this study through: The Panini Fulcrum: 400 BC. The Vikramaditya Fulcrum: 375-415 BC. The Prithipal Fulcrum: AD 9. The Bhatinda Fort fulcrum: AD 783. The Gilpal Fulcrum: AD 1113. Saga Indicus is crucial to the understanding of Indo-European cultures.

At an auction in Edinburgh in 2010, the sale of an old walking stick belonging to a British officer, Captain Gill, shed new light on one of the mysterious crimes of the Victorian era. Captain William Gill and his companions, the noted Arabist Professor Edward Palmer of Cambridge University and a young naval lieutenant, Harold Charrington, were killed in an ambush by Bedouin in the Sinai Desert in 1883. The trio had been tasked with informal diplomacy in the region, specifically to prevent the Arab sheikhs from joining the Egyptian rebels and to secure their non-interference with the Suez Canal. The gruesome murders shocked late-Victorian Britain, and led to pressure from the Queen, Parliament and the Press for the British government to launch a manhunt for the killers in a vast desert area with mountainous terrain. This book traces the story behind the murder of the three men, uncovering the reason for their journey to the desert, the story of the murder itself and the backlash home in England. It shines light on a fascinating, forgotten crime, as well as on early intelligence operations in the Middle East.

Edward Johnston (1872–1944) and Eric Gill (1882–1940) were originators of two of the world's most enduring typefaces. Johnston still stands as London's primary 'wayfinding' lettering, while Gill Sans is the type of choice within many public and private organisations across the UK today. This book celebrates their significant contribution to Britain's visual culture. Tracing the story of each typeface from inception to the present day, Mark Ovenden skilfully draws together a complex joint history that incorporates Edward Johnston's and Eric Gill's friendship and occasional collaboration, the myriad of revisions to both typeface designs, and the enduring appeal of the two typefaces over the last century among a range of clients, most notably the London Underground (Johnston) and the BBC (Gill Sans). Including rarely seen imagery, this fascinating book is must for all typography, design and cultural history enthusiasts.

From the beginning men who obviously never read Gill warned me of what they called his 'tendencies toward Hyper-Calvinism and Antinomianism'. Having read almost everything Gill wrote, I am still searching for even a hint of these 'tendencies'. Instead, I have found in all his writings the most faithful exposition of Holy Scripture, a consistent Christ-centred, Christ exalting theology, and a constant, robust declaration of God's free and sovereign grace in Christ. Very few days have passed since my first introduction to John Gill in which I have not read something from his pen. He, by far, my favourite writer.George Ella has been used of God to give the Christian public an opportunity to understand and appreciate one of the giants of church history in this thoroughly researched biography. As I recommend Gill's writings to anyone who wants to understand the Bible, I heartily recommend George Ella's biography to anyone who wants to understand Gill.' Don Fortner Biographical table 1. Eric Gill (1882 – 1940) was an English sculptor, stonemason, typographer and printmaker; a controversial figure whose fascination with erotica and sex were at odds with his deep religious beliefs. He spent his formative years in Brighton and Chichester before a period of study in London. After marriage in 1904, he moved with his young family to Ditchling in Sussex where he set up an artistic community. In 1924 Gill and his disciples left for Capel-y-ffin in Wales, followed four years later by a move to a home near High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire. Among his many enduring artistic achievements are the typefaces Gill Sans, Perpetua and Joanna; the group of sculptures Prospero and Ariel for BBC Broadcasting House; numerous First World War memorials; and a vast array of illustrations for the private Golden Cockerel Press. He died in 1940 and is buried in Speen Churchyard, in the Chilterns.
