L'asma grave rappresenta un fenotipo distinto e poco compreso di asma che presenta una morbilit e una mortalit maggiori e un bisogno sproporzionato di assistenza sanitaria. Gli studi hanno indicato la presenza di una risposta infiammatoria specifica negli asmatici gravi, tra cui la scarsit di espressione delle classiche citochine di tipo Th-2. In seguito alla stimolazione antigenica, le cellule T CD4+ naive proliferano e si differenziano in varie sottopopolazioni effettrici, quali le cellule Th-1 e Th-2.
