Meaning and Identity in a Greek Landscape

Meaning and Identity in a Greek Landscape

Hamish Forbes

Cambridge University Press
2007
sidottu
In this study, Hamish Forbes explores how Greek villagers have understood and reacted to their landscapes over the centuries, from the late medieval period to the present. Analyzing how they have seen themselves belonging to their local communities and within both local and wider landscapes, Forbes examines how these aspects of belonging have informed each other. Forbes also illuminates cross-disciplinary interests in memory and the importance of monuments. Based on data gathered over 25 years, Forbes' study combines the rich detail of ethnographic field work with historical and archaeological time-depth, showing how landscapes have important meaning beyond the religious sphere in terms of kinship, ideas about the past, and in their role as productive assets.
American Citizens, British Slaves

American Citizens, British Slaves

We hardly had our feet on the soil, when almost the first objects that greeted our vision were gibbets, and men toiling in the most abject misery, looking more degraded even than so many dumb beasts. Such sights, and the supposition that such might be our fate, served to sink the iron still deeper in our souls. American Citizens, British Slaves tells the strange story of almost a hundred United States citizens who were transported to Van Diemen's Land in 1839-40. As members of the Patriot Army that had conducted border raids into the colony of Upper Canada in 1838, they saw themselves as courageous republican activists. Instead of heroic liberators, they became political prisoners of Her Majesty's government. Sent to Van Diemen's Land by Lieutenant-Governor Arthur, the Patriot exiles endured years of harsh treatment before they were eventually pardoned. Not being British subjects, their transportation was almost certainly illegal. This vivid and intimate story of political exile and punishment provides a window into the everyday life of the many thousands of forgotten men and women who endured the calculated cruelties of penal transportation.

Insane Mode is the astounding story of the most revolutionary car company since Ford, revealing how, under Elon Musk's leadership, it is bringing to an end the era of gasoline-powered transportation. Hamish McKenzie, journalist and former writer for Tesla, explores how an unlikely West Coast start-up with an audacious dream to create a new successful US car company, went up against not only the might of the government-backed Detroit companies, but also the massive power of Big Oil. Insane Mode is a story of ingenuity and revolution - of how a new world of transportation could change people's lives globally.
The Birth of a Great Power System, 1740-1815
The Birth of a Great Power System, 1740-1815 examines a key development in modern European history: the origins and emergence of a competitive state system.H.M. Scott demonstrates how the well-known and dramatic events of these decades - the emergence of Russia and Prussia; the three partitions of Poland; the continuing retreat of the Ottoman Empire; the unprecedented territorial expansion of Revolutionary and Napoleonic France, halted by the final defeat of Napoleon - were part of a wider process that created the modern great power system, dominated by Europe's five leading states.Enhanced by maps and a chronology of principal events, this comprehensive and accessible textbook is fully up-to-date in its coverage of recent scholarship. Unlike many other treatments of this period, Scott extends his beyond the French Revolution of 1789 in order to demonstrate how events both before and after this great upheaval merged to produce the central political development in modern European history. This book addresses the crucial phase in the emergence of the modern international system which, with the subsequent addition of the USA, Japan and Russia, has prevailed until the present day.

This successful book, first published in 1980 and now in its fourth edition, provides an authoritative guide for busy practitioners trying to keep pace with current trends in small animal orthopaedic surgery. In this new edition Hamish Denny and Steven Butterworth have retained the same practical approach but have completely rewritten and updated the book to provide a comprehensive review of orthopaedic and spinal conditions in the dog and cat. The illustrations have also undergone a major overhaul and the many line drawings are now combined with photographs and radiographs to clarify diagnostic and surgical techniques. Although the size of the book has increased, its regional approach to problems still enables the reader to use it as a rapid reference guide. It will prove an invaluable source of information for veterinary practitioners diagnosing and treating orthopaedic and spinal problems, while postgraduate students taking further qualifications in orthopaedics will find a sound basis for their studies and further reading provided here.

Quantifying and Managing Disruption Claims

Quantifying and Managing Disruption Claims

Hamish Lal

Thomas Telford Ltd
2002
sidottu
Claims involving disruption are commonly accepted to be the most difficult to quantify. Disruptions that occur during a working day can lead to productivity loss which, in turn, can lead to time and cost overruns. If the disruption consumes the entire float in an activity, then disruption can cause a delay to project completion and lead to claims for extensions of time. Contractors of all tiers, concerned that they have lost money, troubled by the threat of liquidated damages or simply because the conditions of contract allow, submit claims for loss/expense and (in the worst case scenarios) extensions of time. The accurate quantification of the time and cost effects of such disruption is typically prevented because the role of labour/resource productivity is not fully recognised, site labour productivity is not correctly measured (if at all) and, finally, because the relationship between, in practice, the bill of quantities items (cost) and programme activities (time) is not direct or transparent. The solution proposed in this book integrates cost and time in order to develop a site labour productivity measurement system whereby claims involving disruption can be objectively and automatically quantified. It is a practical text that challenges the current construction industry cost and time estimating methods, demystifies the measurement of site labour/resource productivity and – in line with the Society of Construction Law Delay and Disruption Protocol launched in October 2002 – puts forward a rational and sufficiently accurate method of quantifying the effects of disruption in terms of both cost and time. Through the use of the solution on four very different demonstration construction projects, this book provides worked examples and tangible evidence of how the solution is designed to operate in practice. Disruption claims often impact on the whole of the construction industry and so this book has been specifically written for anyone who is involved in submitting, evaluating, awarding, managing and resolving disruption claims.

Seismic changes are occurring in the world of advertising due to the inexorable rise of new technologies and the way consumers are using new media. These changes in behaviour are challenging accepted ways of using the media to build brands. Based on data from the IPA Effectiveness Awards databank and from IPA TouchPoints, the world's first customer-centric media habits survey, plus research from Nielsen and Millward Brown, the authors propose a new model, 'F.A.I.P.A', for media and communications planning. This model describes how to select the right media channel to promote a brand from the many that are now available, and if you are employing a range of 'bought', 'owned' and 'earned' media, which to concentrate on, and how to allocate the budget between them. Spending Advertising Money in the Digital Age also has contributions from leading figures in the media industry and contains many examples of top campaigns with demonstrable results in the marketplace.

A Century of Edinburgh offers an insight into the daily lives and living conditions of local people and gives the reader glimpses and details of familiar places during a century of unprecedented change. Many aspects of Edinburgh's recent history are covered, famous occasions and individuals are remembered and the impact of national and international events is witnessed. A Century of Edinburgh provides a striking account of the changes that have so altered the city's appearance and records the process of transformation. Drawing on detailed local knowledge of the community, and illustrated with a wealth of black-and-white photographs, this book recalls what Edinburgh has lost in terms of buildings, traditions and ways of life. It also acknowledges the regeneration that has taken place and celebrates the character and energy of local people as they move through the first years of this new century.
