Hans Urs Von Balthasar and Protestantism

Hans Urs Von Balthasar and Protestantism

Hans Urs von Balthasar and Protestantism examines Balthasar's engagement with Protestantism, primarily in the persons of Martin Luther and Karl Barth and explores the implications of this engagement for Fundamental Theology. At the very root of Luther's confrontation with the Catholic Church of the late Middle Ages lies his antipathy for Aristotle and for "natural theology". In other words, the Protestant difference has as much to do with its suspicion of the Catholic treatment of faith and reason as it does with the Catholic treatment of faith and works. This is a suspicion that is only exacerbated in Barth's association of the "analogy of being" with the Antichrist. Balthasar takes these criticisms very seriously, and, in addressing them, not only has much of relevance to say about the Catholic-Protestant differences, but also about the Yale-Chicago differences. In short, this study shows how Balthasar's dialogue with Luther and Barth sheds light on the impasse that has arisen between the so-called "correlational" and "revelocentric" schools of contemporary theology. If, indeed, Christ is the "concrete universal," then, it argues, we should not have to decide between the two.
Hans Urs von Balthasar and the Question of Tragedy in the Novels of Thomas Hardy
What role do novels, drama, and tragedy play within Christian thought and living? The twentieth century Catholic theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar addressed these questions using tragic drama. For him, Christ was the true tragic hero of the world who exceeded all tragic literature and experience. Balthasar demonstrated how ancient, pre-Christian tragedy and Renaissance works contained important Christian concepts, but he critiqued modern novels as failing to be either truly tragic or Christian. By examining the tragic novels of Thomas Hardy on their own terms, we have an important counterpoint to Balthasar's argument that the novel is too prosaic for theological reflection. Hardy's novels are an apt pairing for examination and critique, as they are both classically and biblically influenced, as well as contemporary. The larger implication for Balthasar's theology is that his innovations in theological aesthetics and tragedy must be expanded in the light of modernity and the tragic novel.

Hans Urs von Balthasar's work has had an increasingly significant impact on theology of 20th century. This anthology of Balthasar’s writings seeks to encourage readers to take the tour of the 'Balthasarian Cathedral' by employing an architectural metaphor, which is based on Balthasar’s own depiction of his thinking. The cathedral trope enables readers to locate and engage his works and key themes without losing a sense of the whole. It also provides a blueprint for the structure of Balthasar’s thought as a tool to position his writings in order to grasp the breadth and depth of his thinking. So, while the anthology only serves as an introduction by laying out the cathedral floor plan, glancing momentarily at several prominent features, and suggesting extended tours and excursions that require more time and contemplation, it is hoped that patrons will turn these into longer, more sustained gazes of Balthasar’s theology. This book is enhanced by the inclusion of original source texts and summaries of key ideas, designed to engage with the reader as they survey Balthasar's work. Perhaps, then, the seeds of this anthology will bear the fruit of sustained, critical engagement at a depth indicative of the man himself. Welcome to the tour!

Hans Joachim Iwand on Church and Society
This volume brings Iwand’s reflections on justification to bear on questions of the intersection of church and society. Iwand critiques the typical Lutheran understanding of the two kingdoms and charts a new way forward for understanding Luther’s theology, as well as the way it addresses Christian life within society. Most importantly, Iwand discusses church and society, which have so often been closed to one another, and how they have been and continue to be opened up to each other by the kingdom of God.

During the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries, Hans Zatzka (1859-1945) was a popular artist in Austria. He is best known for his truly unique fantasy paintings, in which he created his own dream world. Zatzka's utopia consisted of soft natural environments in which he placed fairy-tale-like women, often surrounded by flowers, mythological creatures, and animals. These works range from playful scenes with some humorous elements, to women placed in an Oriental environment, to colorful interior scenes where a sensual woman is waiting for her lover. Some of these fantasy paintings are created in a keyhole format, creating the sensation that the viewer is peeking at the models through the keyhole. Zatzka was a very productive artist, and his oeuvre also includes works with a religious theme, mainly Madonna paintings, and still lifes filled with colorful flowers and fruits.During his career, the art of Hans Zatzka strongly appealed to the lower and middle class citizens, and his paintings ended up with private collectors and local galleries. As a consequence, Zatzka's works have not been on display in major museums over time, severely limiting his exposure to a larger audience. Luckily, many of his works are now regularly sold in auctions, providing us with a glimpse into the mesmerizing world of Hans Zatzka. This richly-illustrated coffee table book provides a stunning overview of the artist and his works.

Hans Christian Orsted (1777-1851) was one of the leading scientists of the nineteenth century, having played a crucial role in founding electromagnetism. Unfortunately for the English-speaking world, almost all of his research was published in other languages, particularly his native Danish. This book will help to elevate Orsted to his rightful place in the history of science by finally making his most important scientific works available in English. The book includes, for example, Orsted's account of his revolutionary experiments in electromagnetism. In 1820, he discovered that a compass needle deflects from magnetic north when an electric current is switched on or off in a nearby wire. This showed that electricity and magnetism were related phenomena, a finding that laid the foundation for the theory of electromagnetism and for research that later created such technologies as radio, television, and fiber optics. The unit of magnetic field strength was named the Orsted in his honor. Selections here also show the extraordinary breadth of Orsted's interests, which range through a long and prolific career from the study of plant alkaloids and the compression of fluids to the nature of light and the "natural science" of beauty. The writings are taken from scientific papers, Orsted's correspondence, and reports of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters. The book will not only draw long overdue attention to Orsted's own work but will also shed new light on the nature of scientific study in the nineteenth century. Originally published in 1998. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Hans-Ulrich Treichel, "one of the greatest talents of contemporary literature" (Die Zeit), is a poet, essayist and professor of German Literature at the University of Leipzig. He has enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame since the publication of his first novel, Der Verlorene in 1998. Translated into English as Lost, it has been described as "an extraordinary portrait of broken love, of the ways that loss undoes a family; the way the ghosts of the past can haunt a present". Treichel?s second novel, equally well received, was Tristanakkord (The Tristan Chord), published in 2000. Both widely acclaimed novels were bestsellers in Germany and have been translated into twenty-one languages. This monograph will be of interest to both scholars and students of contemporary German literature. It is the first academic assessment (in English or in German) of Treichel's work, which ranges from novels to poetry and academic writing. It begins with a previously unpublished essay by Treichel, a biographical essay and an interview. Subsequent essays include an overview of his career and readings of individual works, as well as discussing Treichel?s aesthetics and the relationship of his academic and literary writings. The volume concludes with a full bibliography.
