The notion of Minimalism is proposed as a theoretical tool supporting a more differentiated understanding of reduction and thus forms a standpoint that allows definition of aspects of simplicity. Possible uses of the notion of minimalism in the field of human–computer interaction design are examined both from a theoretical and empirical viewpoint, giving a range of results. Minimalism defines a radical and potentially useful perspective for design analysis. The empirical examples show that it has also proven to be a useful tool for generating and modifying concrete design techniques. Divided into four parts this book traces the development of minimalism, defines the four types of minimalism in interaction design, looks at how to apply it and finishes with some conclusions.

The two novellas by Wilhelm Jensen (1837-1911), "The Red Umbrella" ("Der rote Schirm") and "In the Gothic House" ("Im gotischen Hause") were originally published by Verlag Emil Felber, Berlin in 1892 under the title BERM CHTE SUPERIOR POWERS]. They have not been reprinted since, nor have they to the best of my knowledge ever been translated into English. They play a role in the history of psycho-analysis, because Sigmund Freud refers to them in a letter to Wilhelm Jensen on December 16, 1907 concerning the latter's novella GRADIVA, which Freud had analysed at length: ". . . a knowledgeable friend has drawn my attention to two other novellas of yours, which you have combined under one title as " berm chte" "Superior Powers"]. Of these the first - Der rote Schirm - The Red Umbrella] shows remarkably many traits which also belong to the Gradiva; the other - Im gotischen Hause - In the Gothic House] appears to be related to the Gradiva via mediation of the first." Die zitierten Gedichte (sowohl von Hoelderlin als auch von Jensen) habe ich im Original gelassen. Es sind sehr interessante Jahre, die Sechziger des 20. Jahrhunderts - auch in Ostdeutschland. In die konservative Gesellschaft, auch wenn sie sich sozialistisch nennt, dringt unaufhaltsam die Beatmusik ein und deren Repr sentanten dominieren immer st rker das Leben und die Werte der jungen Menschen. Der Erz hler w chst in dieser Zeit auf und eckt, ohne dass er es eigentlich will, immer wieder an, sei es zu Hause oder in der Schule. Letztere nimmt er anfangs nicht so ernst, da er leidenschaftlich in einer Beatband spielt. The sudden Jews were between a rock and a hard place. The synagogues did not know them, and the official church did not want them. In this perilous time, a fraction of the church split with the official church and set up an agency to try to help - the Bureau Gr ber, named after the courageous and resourceful pastor who founded it. In 1961, Pastor Gr ber was the only German called as a witness in the Eichmann trial in Jerusalem. He testified: One evening I arrived very worn out in the Kurf rstenstrasse, and there I had the impression that the accused Eichmann] had had, if I may say so, a good day. Perhaps he even took pity on me. I don't know if the accused remembers this incident. He said, 'Why are you bothering with these Jews, anyway? No one will thank you for this work. Why all this big fuss for the Jews' I answered him, 'Do you know the road that leads from Jerusalem to Jericho' And then I said, 'Once there was a Jew lying on this road, who was the victim of robbers. And then someone came along who was not a Jew and he helped him. The Lord whom alone I obey says to me, "Go thou and do likewise." That is my answer.' Er verl sst zu jedem neuen Sonnenzyklus f r einen oder zwei Monde seine Taverne und begibt sich auf eine Reise und eine Suche, deren Sinn niemand so recht verstehen kann. F r Hamilkar ist diese Suche zu seinem Lebenszweck geworden und in der Zeit zwischen seinen Fahrten fiebert er bereits wieder auf die n chste Fahrt und eine neue Suche.
