Kirjoja seurasivat valtavan suositut elokuvat. Harry Potter -kirjoja on myyty maailmanlaajuisesti yli 600 miljoonaa kappaletta ja käännetty 85 kielelle. Äänikirjoina niitä on kuunneltu yli miljardi tuntia. Sarjaan liittyen J. K. Rowling kirjoitti myös kolme lyhyttä hyväntekeväisyyskirjaa: Huispaus kautta aikojen, Ihmeotukset ja niiden olinpaikat ja Siuntio Silosäkeen tarinat kansainvälisen lasten hyväntekeväisyysjärjestön Lumosin tueksi. Ihmeotukset ja niiden olinpaikat inspiroi uuden elokuvasarjan päähenkilönään taikazoologi Lisko Scamander. Harryn tarinaa aikuisena jatkoi näytelmä Harry Potter ja kirottu lapsi, jonka J. K. Rowling kirjoitti näytelmäkirjailija Jack Thornen ja ohjaaja John Tiffanyn kanssa. Näytelmää esitetään useissa teattereissa eri puolilla maailmaa. Vuonna 2020 Rowling palasi lastenkirjallisuuden pariin ja kirjoitti sadun Ikkabog. Kirjan tuotto ohjattiin Rowlingin hyväntekeväisyyssäätiö Volantin kautta lievittämään COVID-19-pandemian sosiaalisia vaikutuksia. Lastenromaani Jouluposso julkaistiin vuonna 2021.

Hermione Lee sees Virginia Woolf afresh, in her historical setting and as a vital figure for our times. Her book moves freely between a richly detailed life-story and new attempts to understand crucial questions - the impact of her childhood, the cause and nature of her madness and suicide, the truth about her marriage, her feelings for women, her prejudies and obsessions. This is a vivid, close-up portrait, returning to primary sources, and showing Woolf as occupying a distinct, even uneasy position with 'Bloomsbury'. It is a writer's life, illustrating how the concerns of her work arise and develop, and a political life, which establishes Woolf as a radically sceptical, subversive, courageous feminist. Incorporating newly discovered sources and illustrated with photos and drawings never used before, this biography is a revelation - informed, intelligent and moving.
Romantic Medicine and John Keats

Romantic Medicine and John Keats

John Keats was a licensed apothecary and general practitioner of medicine. This book addresses the four fundamental intellectual issues of Romantic medicine - the physician's task, the meaning of life, the constituents of health and prescriptions of disease, and evolution of matter and mind - as they find focus and expression in poetry and aesthetic theory. The book traces the genesis of these issues and shows the reason for their immediate relevance to the Romantic period as a whole. It identifies them as the primary philosophical counters of the artistic and scientific debates of the revolutionary period and discusses them and their ideologies in the context of the era's belief in the art of healing as the foremost humanistic discipline.

Biography is one of the most popular, best-selling, and widely-read of literary genres. But why do certain people and historical events arouse so much interest? How can biographies be compared with history and works of fiction? Does a biography need to be true? Is it acceptable to omit or conceal things? Does the biographer need to personally know the subject? Must a biographer be subjective? In this Very Short Introduction Hermione Lee considers the cultural and historical background of different types of biographies, looking at the factors that affect biographers and whether there are different strategies, ethics, and principles required for writing about one person compared to another. She also considers contemporary biographical publications and considers what kind of 'lives' are the most popular and in demand. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

James Fitzjames Stephen was a distinguished jurist, a codifier of the law in England and India, and the judge in the ill-fated Maybrick case; a serious and prolific journalist, a pillar of the Saturday Review and the Pall Mall Gazette; and in Liberty, Equality, Fraternity (1873) the hard-hitting assailant of John Stuart Mill. Fitzjames's younger brother Leslie was founding editor of the Dictionary of National Biography and father of Virginia Woolf. The Life of Sir James Fitzjames Stephen, by his brother Leslie Stephen (1895) is the biography of one eminent Victorian by another. It is a lucid and affectionate portrait, yet far from uncritical, as revealing of its author as its subject. With a narrative that embraces legal history, the government of India, the Victorian press, the crisis of religious faith, and the 'paradise lost' of political liberalism, the biography is also an indispensable source for the history of the Stephen family, which belonged to what Noel Annan called the 'intellectual aristocracy' of the nineteenth century, connecting the Clapham Sect to the Bloomsbury group. This first modern edition of The Life of Sir James Fitzjames Stephen is a volume in the OUP series Selected Writings of James Fitzjames Stephen. It includes an introductory essay by Hermione Lee, extensive notes, four appendices of additional documents (many previously unpublished), and a bibliography of Fitzjames Stephen's articles and reviews by Thomas E. Schneider.
Making Jet Engines in World War II

Making Jet Engines in World War II

Hermione Giffard

Our stories of industrial innovation tend to focus on individual initiative and lone breakthroughs. With Making Jet Engines, Hermione Giffard uses the case of the development of jet engines during World War II to offer a different way of understanding technological innovation, revealing the complicated mix of factors that go into any decision to pursue an innovative, and therefore risky technology. Giffard compares the approaches of Germany, Britain, and the United States, showing that each approached jet engines in different ways because of its own particular war aims and industrial expertise. Germany, which produced more jet engines than the others, did so largely as replacements for more expensive piston engines. Britain, on the other hand, produced relatively few engines but, by shifting emphasis to design rather than production, found itself at war's end holding an unrivaled range of designs. The US emphasis on development, meanwhile, built an institutional basis for postwar production. Taken together, Giffard's accounts make a powerful case for a more nuanced understanding of technological innovation, one that takes into account the influence of the many organizational factors that play a part in the journey from idea to finished product.
