Living with Monsters

Living with Monsters

Aldous Huxley is one of the most well-known modernist intellectuals of the first half of the twentieth century, excelling in novels, essays, philosophical tracts, and poems. His novels are special in that they use a unique form – the novel of ideas – with which to satirize human nature and the pride regarding human achievement. Few readers of English literature are not acquainted with books like Point Counter Point, Eyeless in Gaza, and Brave New World (novels dealt with in detail). A proper study of Huxley’s characterization in his novels opens up a veritable treasure-house of history, philosophy, psychology, and incisive satire. "Characterology", as the art of projecting different kinds of characters is called, is an ancient art, which either aimed at representing the entire universe in a single individual, or the same in a variegated form through various individuals. Huxley uses the latter kind in his representation of character, and as such, a study of the characters of his novels opens up a general interpretation of the universe as a whole.

Maternal Fictions

Maternal Fictions

This book constitutes a feminist literary analysis of motherhood as presented in selected Indian women’s fictions across a diverse range of geographical, linguistic, class and caste contexts. Situated at the crossroads of motherhood studies and literary studies, this book offers a rigorous examination of the prosody and politics of motherhood in this corpus. In its five thematically focused chapters, the book scrutinises in depth such key concerns as maternal ambivalence; maternal agency and caste; mother–daughter relationships; motherhood and diaspora; and non-biological motherhood. It attempts to understand the literary ramifications of these issues in order to identify the ways in which fiction writers reconceive of the notion of motherhood and maternal identities from and against multiple perspectives. Another pressing concern is whether these Indian women writers’ visions furnish readers with any different understandings of motherhood as compared to dominant Western feminist discourses. Maternal Fictions advances feminist literary criticism in the specific area of Indian women’s writing and the overarching areas of motherhood and literature by acting as a launchpad into a complex constellation of ideas concerning motherhood. The fictional universe is at once ambivalent, diverse, contingent, grounded in a specific location, and yet well placed to converse with discourses emanating from other times and places.
Nomadic Indigenous Peoples and the Law

Nomadic Indigenous Peoples and the Law

This book investigates the unique challenges faced by nomadic Indigenous peoples in claiming self-determination and rights to their ancestral lands.Nomadic or mobile Indigenous peoples have been largely ignored in the wider context of Indigenous land rights, but such groups are often even more marginalised than other Indigenous peoples. Focusing on the Indian Forest Rights Act, this book explores how access to justice remains uneven and elusive for mobile Indigenous communities who have been dispossessed of their lands. Exposing the lack of recognition of usufruct rights and of customary land laws, which have caused a more acute displacement from ancestral lands for mobile Indigenous peoples, the book reveals how their nomadic livelihoods have excluded them from government policies and laws. The book further examines the gendered and intersectional aspects of this exclusion. In conclusion, the book maintains that legislation such as the progressive Forest Rights Act is necessary, but not enough, to protect the rights of mobile Indigenous peoples. In such cases, the book argues, legislation has to be supported by nuanced governance, which is sensitive to the particular challenges presented by Indigenous peoples who are further marginalised through nomadic lifestyles. This book will be of interest to scholars and researchers working in the areas of Indigenous studies, socio-legal studies, human and minority rights, and gender and international development.

Gendered transactions seeks to capture the complex experience of the white woman in colonial India through an exploration of gendered interactions over the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It examines missionary and memsahibs' colonial writings, both literary and non-literary, probing their construction of Indian women of different classes and regions, such as zenana women, peasants, ayahs and wet-nurses. Also examined are delineations of European female health issues in male authored colonial medical handbooks, which underline the misogyny undergirding this discourse. Giving voice to the Indian woman, this book also scrutinises the fiction of the first generation of western-educated Indian women who wrote in English, exploring their construction of white women and their negotiations with colonial modernities.

One of the greatest challenges in providing information and communication technology access is that about 775 million people in the world are completely non-literate and many are able to read only with great difficulty and effort. Even though mobile phone penetration is growing very fast, people with low levels of literacy have been found to avoid complex functions, and primarily use mobile phones for voice communication only.User Interface Design for Low-literate and Novice Users looks at how we can design information and communications technology (ICT) user interfaces (UIs) in a way that novice and low-literate users can access a broad range of services and utilities, increasingly available to them, with minimal training and external assistance. It begins by observing the challenges in designing for low-literate users, and in conducting user studies among low-income communities in the developing world. It discusses techniques used by researchers in overcoming some of these challenges. It presents a review of existing examples of UIs for novice and low-literate users, which have used various combinations of input-output modalities other than text. It goes on to discuss strong trends that are starting to emerge in this design space and concludes with opportunities and future directions for research and design of UIs targeted at populations with low-literacy.User Interface Design for Low-literate and Novice Users is relevant for anyone with an interest in user experience design and technology for global development.

Fare forward travelers a reading of select travel narratives
Travel writing at the outset records the experience of an author touring a place for the pleasure of travel. Travelogues generally exhibit a coherent narrative coupled with aesthetics beyond the logging of dates or events as found in travel journals which in fact can be ascribed as Literary Travel Writings or Travelogues in popular parlance. Travel writing has flourished through the ages, and early travel accounts by explorers and travelers continue to be valued as a significant source of information about history of cultures and places. Contemporary travel narratives have a long and established history of literary conventions to draw upon their focus on the writer's experience an a personal level and point of view. Stephen Kohl, a well-known critic on Travel Writing, draws a parallel between aspects of travel writing and autobiography by opining that the main concept in both forms is the fashion in which the distinctive personal nature gets captured vividly. Critical reaction to travel narrative has a mixed history with scholars like Paul Fussell observing Travel Narratives as a 'Haven for second-rate literary talent'. Yet their popularity continues unabated, with travel writers having achieved not only remarkable commercial success but also made on impact on literature.
