Jacobus Cornelius Kapteyn (1851-1922) of the University of Groningen was one of the foremost astronomers of his time, resulting in a leading role internationally of Dutch astronomy throughout the twentieth century. This volume, which is the proceedings of a special `legacy' symposium at the celebration of the 385th anniversary of the University of Groningen, addresses Kapteyn's influence on the development of modern astronomy through studies of his pioneering work on statistical astronomy and the Structure of the Sidereal System, and his leadership in establishing international collaborations, in particular the Plan of Selected Areas. In addition to historical studies related to Kapteyn's person, work, international collaborations and organisational efforts, the volume discusses the influence of Kapteyn on the internationalisation of astronomy and on contemporary astronomy. It also provides an inventory of Kapteyn's correspondence.
NB by J. C. is a varied and witty selection from the popular NB column which J. C. wrote in the TLS each week between 1997 and 2020.

The year 2008 marks the 150th birth anniversary of Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose who, at a relatively young age, established himself among the ranks of European scientists during the heyday of colonial rule in India. He was one of those great Indian scientists who helped to introduce western science into India. A physicist, a plant electrophysiologist and one of the first few biophysicists in the world, Sir J C Bose was easily 60 years ahead of his time and much of his research that was ignored during his lifetime is now entering the mainstream. As the inventor of millimeter waves and their generation, transmission and reception, and the first to make a solid state diode, he was the first scientist who convincingly demonstrated that plants possess a nervous system of their own and “feel” pain. J C Bose later spent his life's savings to set up the Institute which carries his name in Calcutta and Darjeeling. This book covers Bose's life in colonial India, including the general patriotic environment that pervaded at the time and how he became one of the flag bearers of the Bengal Renaissance. It also examines the scientific achievements of this polymath and his contributions to physics and plant electrophysiology, while highlighting his philosophy of life.

A comedy about a 9 year old boy who is disappointed and concerned about his social status in his grammer school and community becauses he receives a J.C.Higgins bicycle instead of a Schwinn. To make his point he compares his J.C.Higgins to America's laughable version of an automobile....The Edsel. He talks about kids so desperate to not be associated with either the Edsel or the Higgins that they invented "Edsel Escape Diving." This was a precision move designed by kids so that when the parents slowed the family Edsel in order to pull into the school yard, the kids would leap from the car while it was still in motion. The purpose for that little manuver was to put as much distance as possible between themselves and the joke that Detroit played on an unsuspecting public.

Arthurian Studies in Honour of P.J.C. Field

Studies range over the whole field of Arthurian literature, in Europe and North America, with special focus on Malory and Morte Darthur. Peter Field, Professor of English at the University of Wales, Bangor, is a distinguished Arthurian scholar (and vice-president of the International Arthurian Society) whose work has focused particularly on Malory's Morte Darthur. This special interest is reflected by the contributors to this volume, but a wide variety of other Arthurian and associated material is also covered in the twenty-seven studies. The chapters range over the whole field of Arthurian vernacular texts and include new studies of early French and German texts as well as an analysis of the impact of Arthurian materials on Galician-Portuguese poetry. Many provide new insights into Malory's text and sources, and these culminate in reflections on Malory's impact on one later American reader, Mark Twain. Collectively the chapters on Malory substantiate a the claim that Malory is a keen and critical reader of his source texts, and thathe is a powerful stylist.
