Bio-Implant Interface

Bio-Implant Interface

J.E. Ellingsen; S.P. Lyngstadaas

CRC Press
2019
nidottu
Achieving good clinical outcomes with implanted biomaterials depends upon achieving optimal function, both mechanical and biological, which in turn depends upon integrating advances realized in biological science, material science, and tissue engineering. As these advances push back the frontiers of biomaterial medicine , the control and patterning of bio-implant interface reactions will have a tremendous impact on future design and prospects of implant treatments. Bio-Implant Interface: Improving Biomaterials and Tissue Reactions brings together a remarkable panel of scientists to present the state-of-the-art in our understanding of interactions at the interface between biomaterials and living tissue. Much of the focus is on the importance of the implant surface's topography and chemistry to its interaction with the biological environment. Biomineralization along with the biological content of the interface and its role in directing cellular response along desired pathways also receive particular attention. The pursuit of new and better designs for improved biocompatibility and patient response to implants continues to challenge clinicians and scientists alike. This book offers a unique opportunity to bring yourself up-to-date on recent advances in the field and new strategies for controlling the bio-implant interface.

Introduction to Lie Algebras and Representation Theory

Introduction to Lie Algebras and Representation Theory

J.E. Humphreys

Springer-Verlag New York Inc.
1973
nidottu
This book is designed to introduce the reader to the theory of semisimple Lie algebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0, with emphasis on representations. A good knowledge of linear algebra (including eigenvalues, bilinear forms, euclidean spaces, and tensor products of vector spaces) is presupposed, as well as some acquaintance with the methods of abstract algebra. The first four chapters might well be read by a bright undergraduate; however, the remaining three chapters are admittedly a little more demanding. Besides being useful in many parts of mathematics and physics, the theory of semisimple Lie algebras is inherently attractive, combining as it does a certain amount of depth and a satisfying degree of completeness in its basic results. Since Jacobson's book appeared a decade ago, improvements have been made even in the classical parts of the theory. I have tried to incor porate some of them here and to provide easier access to the subject for non-specialists. For the specialist, the following features should be noted: (I) The Jordan-Chevalley decomposition of linear transformations is emphasized, with "toral" subalgebras replacing the more traditional Cartan subalgebras in the semisimple case. (2) The conjugacy theorem for Cartan subalgebras is proved (following D. J. Winter and G. D. Mostow) by elementary Lie algebra methods, avoiding the use of algebraic geometry.

Geology of Construction Materials

Geology of Construction Materials

J.E. Prentice

Chapman and Hall
1990
nidottu
Part of a series, "Geology of Construction Materials" aims to show the connections between academic geology and the needs of the extractive industry by recognising that there is a direct relationship between the processes of mineral formation in the Earth's crust and the mode of occurrence and essential properties of the mineral. This book is intended to be useful to undergraduates in geology and related disciplines and the young graduate working in the extractive industry, although it is not intended as a working handbook. The book draws its information from many scientific, technical and trade journals and includes many examples from the United Kingdom. The differences between these examples and those in western Europe, northern America and developing countries are noted.
Dewey

Dewey

J.E. Tiles

nidottu
First Published in 1990. The purpose of this series is to provide a contemporary assessment and history of the entire course of philosophical thought. Each book constitutes a detailed, critical introduction to the work of a philosopher of major influence and significance. Someone relatively new to philosophy might expect from the series title to have here a book about the disputes in which John Dewey engaged with other philosophers. ‘Arguments’ in the present context, however, refers to a general way of articulating thoughts, that is by offering some as reasons for holding others. The author states that Dewey offers a picture of what contemporary philosophy would be like if, transformed as it has been under the influence of modern science, it had at the same time carried with it more of the legacy of the post-Kantian (or ‘Hegelian’) philosophy of the nineteenth century. This book is an attempt to specify some of the most important features of that picture and how they bear on the way philosophy conducts argument.

This book addresses the integration of service subsystems such as lighting, heating and air conditioning, water supply, electrical power, waste removal and elevators into a building. The authors discusses and illustrates the construction development of these systems within a building, as well as the response of the general building construction to the incorporation of these systems. Case studies of nine buildings provide an on-the-job look at wide range of building uses, sizes and forms of construction. Designers and builders using this guide gain a rare opportunity to see the specific development of individual subsystems within the context of the general building framework.
