The Marengo Jake Stories

The Marengo Jake Stories

Jake Mitchell; Robert Wilton Burton

The University of Alabama Press
2007
nidottu
Between 1885 and 1894 The Montgomery Advertiser, The Birmingham-Age Herald, and The New Orleans Times Democrat featured a series of about 80 humorous black-dialect sketches by Robert Wilton Burton, a bookseller and writer from Auburn, Alabama. According to Burton, these tales were based on various characters in the black community of Auburn, and 36 of them were devoted exclusively to a character called "Marengo Jake." Probably originally from Virginia, Jake Mitchell was brought to the Drake Plantation in Marengo county as a boy in the 1850's. After the Civil War, the Drake family moved to Auburn and many former slaves followed, forming a fairly large expatriate Marengo County community. The theme of the stories, usually related by Jake, centers on the superiority of all things from Marengo County, especially over those in Lee County, in which Auburn is located.

Unique in his determination to lift the curtain on process, Arnold ties each project to a key value of his design philosophy touchpoints that aim to answer the question of how we define comfort in each of these homes which he explores in depth between each chapter. With sketches, plans, material swatches, and favorite resources alongside stunning photographs of the interiors themselves, this is at once a sumptuous survey of one of the most in-demand superstar designers working today and a refreshingly accessible reference for contemporary interior inspiration.

Jake Knight: Allentown Private-Eye - Crime, Comedy, and Conundrums: 35 Years a Gumshoe in Buffalo's Allentown
In the heart of Buffalo's Allentown, inconspicuously watching in alleys, behind keyholes, and in the sultry shadows atop a bar stool lurks a gumshoe hot on a case. Meet Jake Knight, a hard-boiled, trench coat-wearing, cigar-smoking, private eye that could have walked straight out of central casting. Join him as he and his trusty dog Duke sprightly traverse the city's endless maze of crooks, politicians, and men who blow bubbles, in search of justice and money to pay the rent. Rather than overhearing his inner monologue, we're invited to study the depths of his daily observations through the pages of diary entries he posts every night after last call. Insightful, philosophical, and even poetic at times, Jake Knight's story will be a boffo, instant classic, according to his mother.
