Janet B.W. Health risks from infrastructure failures are not well understood, despite the potential widespread introduction of chemical, microbial, and physical contaminants, as well as service disruptions. Public health effects due to distribution infrastructure failures are the concern and responsibility of the local water utility, the health department, community medical care providers, and in special circumstances, emergency first response agencies. While the water utility is responsible for safe water, including the operation and maintenance of distribution infrastructure, other agencies including public health regulators, medical practitioners, and first responders (e.g., police, fire, others) also play a pivotal and active role when dealing with the impacts of infrastructure failures on the community. All agencies involved with some aspect of public health protection from infrastructure failures acknowledged that the true extent of health effects, while not yet well known or characterized, required a collaborative, interagency approach. The study identified methods to develop future collaborative efforts, which included improved understanding of the relationships and outcomes between infrastructure failure events and measured health outcomes, as well as the need to develop improved tools for the detection and monitoring of these events and community effects. This includes the need to develop/refine collaboration for interagency surveillance, response, and mitigation efforts for infrastructure failures. The study identified ways to improve interagency communication as well as potential opportunities for cross-training to improve understanding between stakeholders and to develop better collaborative relationships and programs.

WW II HOME FRONT ROMANTIC COMEDY WITH A STRONG SEASONING OF DANGER AND MYSTERY "Fast-paced, rich in humor, excitement and romance." -Williamsburg Tribune Only a few months earlier, the young woman now known as Jane Smith had lived a life of luxury and privilege as the ruler of a small Balkan kingdom. She enjoyed glittering balls, the finest furnishings, the handsomest of men, the most exquisite of foods. Her only friends were four bearded old men who served as her cabinet, and worshiped the ground she walked on. Then the Germans had marched in, and she and her four councilors barely escaped with their lives. The elderly men had no idea how to survive in the dangerous, terror-stricken new world of wartime Europe. Jane Smith's brains and strength of will won them through peril and certain death across battlefields, perilous borders, famine-filled countries and criminal rings-to the continent's edge and across the sea to freedom and safety in the US. When at last Jane Smith shepherded her elderly charges down the gangplank and into Manhattan, they had only a few hundred dollars left and found themselves living in a shabby old brownstone. Jane had solved many problems and endured many dangers to reach the land of liberty. But her troubles were only beginning. Now that they were here-how would they survive? An unprecedented new challenge faced her. They were safe...but how would they earn their way in this bustling new land, five insignificant figures among teeming millions? To find a way, Jane knew she would have to remake herself and her companions. For the qualities that had made her friends with the leading statesmen in Europe in no way qualified them for jobs in New York's melting pot. And most importantly, who was she in the absence of royal power and prestige? How would she house and feed herself, let alone the four whose lives and welfare were in her hands? She needed to find work she could do, earn their living and prove herself as worthy a citizen as any other American. But nothing in her previous life or training had prepared her for such a challenge. Suddenly Jane Smith had an inspiration. There was one thing the five of them knew intimately: luxurious furnishings and sumptuous decorations. What she didn't know was where, in an unknown new land, to begin-or that she would face competition, racketeers, and the previously unknown problem of publicity. But she had not quailed among falling shells, starvation, and deadly peril, and she would not quail now. Then, the woman who had been raised for a royal match found the one thing she never imagined in all her visions of a new life-a man she could love. But he was only a common soldier... Suspenseful, humorous, heartwarming mystery filled with Kelland's signature oddball characters, including: Jason Tickle of Lard Can, OK: he struck oil and built a palace for a princess, but where would he find a princess to sleep in it? Rapunzel Tickle: a large, awkward young woman, her father built her a palace, but she didn't want to be a princess; she wanted the simple life. Mrs. Jim Slemp: a leading NY socialite, comfortable with her adipose, many times widowed, fabulously wealthy, her voice of brass hid a heart of gold. Sledge Mantor, gangster-about-town: Jane Smith was in his way to a fortune-he liked to play rough, but Jane could play rougher. Canopus Jones: NY's most popular gossip columnist, Canopus stumbled on the two biggest stories of his life and couldn't print either one. Though he fancied himself a cynic, he had infinite faith in Rapunzel's flapjacks. Major Lincoln Bowie of the US Marines: what was so secretive about his past that even Canopus Jones would not reveal it? "A grownup fairy tale in usual urbane Kelland style." -Kirkus Reviews "An amazing book. I love the party scene at the end. It makes me cry every time I read it." -Goodreads

Dora Amy Elles (15 October 1877 - 28 January 1961), who wrote as Patricia Wentworth, was a British crime fiction writer. She was born in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand, India (then the British Raj), and was educated first privately, then at Blackheath High School for Girls in London. Her father was General Edmond Elles, and her mother was Lady Clare (Rothney) Elles. She and her first husband, Lt. Col. George Frederick Horace Dillon, had one daughter. She also became stepmother to Dillon's three sons, two of whom died during World War I. After Dillon's death, in 1906, she settled in Camberley, Surrey. In 1920, she married Lt. Col. George Oliver Turnbull. One of her stepsons who died in World War I had Wentworth as a middle name, after Wentworth Dillon, 4th Earl of Roscommon, and she adopted Wentworth as her pen name.Dora Amy Turnbull died on 28 January 1961, aged 83. Her His estate was valued at 24 561.Wentworth wrote a series of 32 crime novels in the classic whodunit style, featuring Miss Maud Silver, a retired governess and teacher who becomes a professional private detective, in London, England. Miss Silver works closely with Scotland Yard, especially Inspector Frank Abbott, and is fond of quoting the poet Tennyson. Miss Silver is sometimes compared to Jane Marple, the elderly detective created by Agatha Christie."Miss Silver is well known in the better circles of society, and she finds entree to the troubled households of the upper classes with little difficulty. In most of Miss Silver's cases there is a young couple whose romance seems ill fated because of the murder to be solved, but in Miss Silver's competent hands the case is solved, the young couple are exonerated, and all is right in this very traditional world."Wentworth also wrote 34 books outside that series. She won the Melrose prize in 1910 for her first novel A Marriage Under The Terror, set in the French Revolution. Her novels were the topic of Jariel D. O'Neil's 1988 doctoral dissertation. The Astonishing Adventure of Jane Smith: A Detective Mystery
Jane Smith is a feisty young woman but looks a lot like her dear cousin Renata Molloy. One day, while sleepwalking, Molloy reaches where she shouldn't-in the den of Number One, the most notorious mind behind a secret organisation. Now it is up to Jane to protect her cousin and don on the mantle of a female spy to thwart Number One's plan and save the day Excerpt: "The air was heavy with the smoke of bad tobacco and the fumes of a very indifferent gas fire. There was a table in the middle of the room, and some dozen of the men were seated at it. The rest stood in groups, or leaned against the walls. Of the four who formed the Inner Council three were present. Most of the Delegates had expected that the head of The Council, the head of the Federated Organisations, that mysterious Number One whom they all knew by reputation and yet had never seen in the flesh, would be present in person to take the chair..."
