The Journey Narrative in American Literature

The Journey Narrative in American Literature

Janis P. Stout

Praeger Publishers Inc
1983
sidottu
Stout identifies five basic, recurring patterns of the journey narrative: exploration and escape; homeseeking; return; heroic quest; and wandering. Discussion of these patterns is based on considerations such as the direction of the journey, its motivation, and reference to historical precedents. Stout considers works that demonstrate the complex and interwoven patterns of the journey narrative. The more complex the work, the more intricately interwoven these patterns are. To illustrate the all-inclusiveness of the journey motif in American literature Stout pursues the theme into the realm of poetry and relates the fictional journey narrative to the American historical experience.

When the author was a young girl, she experienced her father having mood swings and this created an unsettled environment for her to grow up in. She was anxious and very uncertain of her father and wondering which mood he would be in and this happened every day. But Janis noticed when she grew older she had not only anxiety but she was having mood swings as well. She went and got help and was put on medications and took a test that showed she was not only dealing with generalized anxiety disorder, but depression, depersonalization, borderline personality disorder, and unspecified bipolar disorder with psychosis. This made her wonder if her father suffered from some of the same mood disorders. Only a conversation with him would tell.
Net-Positive Design and Sustainable Urban Development
‘Sustainable’ urban planning, policy and design professes to solve sustainability problems, but often depletes and degrades ever more resources and ecosystems and concentrates wealth and concretize social disparities. Positive Development theory holds that development could create more net ecological and social gains than no construction at all. It explains how existing conceptual, physical and institutional structures are inherently biased against the preservation and expansion of social and natural life-support systems, and proposes explicit reforms to planning, design and decision making that would enable development to increase future options and social and natural life-support systems – in absolute terms.Net-Positive Design and Sustainable Urban Development is aimed at students, academics, professionals and sustainability advocates who wonder why existing approaches have been ineffective. It explains how to reform the anti-ecological biases in our current frameworks of environmental governance, planning, decision making and design – and suggests how to make these changes. Cities can increase both the ‘public estate’ (reduce social stratification, inequity and other causes of conflict, increase environmental quality, wellbeing and access to basic needs, etc.); and the ‘ecological base’ (sequester more carbon and produce more energy than used during construction and operation, increase ecological space to support ecological carrying capacity, ecosystem functions and services, restore the bioregions and wilderness, etc.). No small task, this new book provides academic theory and professional tools for saving the planet, including a free computer app for net-positive design.

Seldom Seen, Rarely Heard

Seldom Seen, Rarely Heard

Janis S. Bohan

TAYLOR FRANCIS LTD

This book uses a constructionist approach to explore the place of women in psychology, both as participants in the discipline and as subjects of psychological theory, research, and practice. The book provides an explanation of the principles of social constructionism and then utilizes this model as a tool for discovering the influences that have shaped psychology's treatment of women. Certainly recent works have addressed the construction of gender, but this is the first to apply the constructionist lens to psychology itself. It asks how the social construction of gender has interacted, both historically and at present, with the sociohistorical forces that shape psychology. It is the intersection of these two understandings–accepted “truths†about the nature of gender and psychology's own understanding of its role–that has framed women's place in the discipline. Utilizing readings from a variety of sources, the book explicates women's place in psychology, from early misogynist to recent feminist attempts to understand the psychology of women. This exploration reveals the tacit assumptions about gender and about psychology that traditionally have acted in concert to discount, demean, marginalize, and misrepresent women's experience. Recent feminist psychology is given an equally thorough review, demonstrating that feminist thought must also be conscientiously queried lest we inadvertently reproduce the very forms we strive to dismantle.
Education and the Pursuit of Wisdom

Education and the Pursuit of Wisdom

Janis (John) Ozolinš

Education and the Pursuit of Wisdom examines the ways in which the timeless human search for wisdom relates to current educational practices. This book challenges the current approach of an economically-driven system preparing students solely for the workplace, and instead discusses the importance of teaching wisdom in order to enrich all aspects of the lives of students. Ozolinš discusses how teaching young people how to make decisions will not only benefit them in everyday life, but will benefit society as a whole.Drawing on religious and classical texts such as Benedictine and Confucian works, Ozolinš’ book assesses and re-evaluates the central aim of education, and moves toward developing a robust understanding of the value of wisdom and its implications. Alternative approaches to education and the ways in which educators can establish agency in this process are also carefully considered.Detailed, well-researched, and with an international scope, Education and the Pursuit of Wisdom is an ideal reference work for researchers, lecturers and postgraduate students of education, and in particular the philosophy of education and the concept of wisdom.
